Spared by the flames that destroyed part of the castle in 1885, the historic tower of Montaigne stands proudly in the heart of a vast park. It was here, at the gates of the purple Périgord, 40 kilometres from Bergerac, that Michel de Montaigne was born and died. The highlight of this hike is a visit to the Tour de Montaigne. The chapel, the room where Montaigne breathed his last breath and Montaigne's library are open to the public. This is where the great humanist wrote his Essays, between 1571 and 1592. The personality of Michel de Montaigne seems to be still present in this intact place. Lawrence of Arabia, who visited it in 1908, recounts his emotion at seeing the library "of the Great Man". Before leaving, enjoy the view of the Lidoire valley and the gardens surrounding the castle.

In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, became fascinated with the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. After Castillon, he heads for St Michel de Montaigne where he will discover with emotion the tower of the Great Man. Then he heads for the Isle valley. He crosses Montpeyroux, which keeps the traces of a rich history. Past the ruined dungeon of the castle of Gurson, he crosses Carsac and Saint Martin and admires their Romanesque churches. Arriving at Ménestérol behind the church, the river bears witness to the developments made in the 19th century for river transport. The traditional cob and wood architecture of some of the houses is a reminder of the proximity of the Double forest, and as you go up the valley, the bridges over the river alternate with the tunnels under the railway until you reach the station at Mussidan.

Come to discover the loop of excursion of Lamothe Montravel; in the borough, admire the church Saint Paixent as well as the town hall sheltered in a medieval tower, only vestige of the fortress of former days. Near the loop, in the plain of Lamothe Montravel, in Colly, between the Dordogne and the Lidoire, the battle of Castillon took place on 17 July 1453. General John Talbot, who commanded the English army, was defeated and killed. A monument commemorates the event.

The church of Saint-Michel, which was originally Romanesque, was built in the 12th century On the western facade, the portal (also from the 12th century) has, in its style, a Saintongean influence. The vault of the building, which collapsed at the time of the Wars of Religion, was restored at the beginning of the 17th century (thanks to funds from Françoise de La Chassagne, wife of Michel de Montaigne). According to the legend, it was she who had her husband's heart placed in the chapel of the church (while his body was transported to Bordeaux) It is worth noting that the church is located just a few hundred meters from the castle of Michel de Montaigne (which allows us to imagine the sentimental link that existed between the de Montaigne family and this religious building). This link goes back to 1477 when Raymond Eyquem, Montaigne's great-grandfather, acquired the estate.

The Domaine de Perreau is a family property of 20 ha covering the appellations of Bergerac and Montravel. Gaëlle Reynou-Gravier, young winemaker from the 5th generation, took back the estate in 2013. Market gardener in Montcaret on 25 hectares, in Périgord Pourpre, halfway between Castillon la Bataille and Sainte Foy la Grande, producer of seasonal vegetables, strawberries and red berries, SARL de la Dame Blanche offers you its harvests for direct sale all year round in a farm store.

Vestiges of a gallo-romain villa with peristyle and inner courtyard inhabited from the Ist to the VIth century. Polycusped hall, antique baths and preserved mosaics. The excavations carried out on the site of Montcaret by Jules Formigé between 1922 and 1939 revealed its wealth. In the 1st and 2nd centuries, a great Gallo-Roman villa was built there. It was transformed in the 4th century: the house was in its prime at that time. The arrangement of the house is Graeco-Roman.

Located in the hamlet of Capitourlan, in Castillon-la-Bataille, this chapel has a particularity which lies in its orientation. It is indeed turned towards the West (whereas most churches are turned towards the East). The entrance to the building (which is therefore to the East) is crowned by a bell tower. This chapel is called "cimeterial", because it is surrounded by a small cemetery.

The Château du Bloy itself exists since the beginning of the nineteen sixties. It was taken over in 2001 by Olivier LAMBERT and Bertrand LEPOITTEVIN-DUBOST with the objective to become one of the best in South west France. Wanting to keep the expressive taste of the "terroir" in the wines and, at the same time, preserve the environment, the Château, that had already been working organically for numerous years, formalised it in july 2011 and started the official process to become certified organic.

La maison de l'esperit, located on the estate of the same name, is a typical Perigordian house with a swimming pool that can accommodate up to 12 people. It is ideally located between the villages of the Périgord crossed by its rivers and the large white sandy beaches of the ocean along the Médoc. This holiday home is located on a large estate of several hectares, on the slopes of the hillsides overlooking the Dordogne plain. You have all the space you want, both inside and outside and well beyond the large terraces. The Maison de l'Espérit can be rented by the week and all year round.

Fasthôtel (in Bergeracois) is located in Montcaret, 25 kilometers west of Bergerac and a 20-minute drive from Saint-Emilion. It has air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi.
