The church of Saint-Michel, which was originally Romanesque, was built in the 12th century
On the western facade, the portal (also from the 12th century) has, in its style, a Saintongean influence.
The vault of the building, which collapsed at the time of the Wars of Religion, was restored at the beginning of the 17th century (thanks to funds from Françoise de La Chassagne, wife of Michel de Montaigne). According to the legend, it was she who had her husband's heart placed in the chapel of the church (while his body was transported to Bordeaux)
It is worth noting that the church is located just a few hundred meters from the castle of Michel de Montaigne (which allows us to imagine the sentimental link that existed between the de Montaigne family and this religious building). This link goes back to 1477 when Raymond Eyquem, Montaigne's great-grandfather, acquired the estate.
