Camping Les Actinidias in Berrias-et-Casteljau: Nature's Escape

The enchanting Bois de Païolive is one of the Ardeche’s strangest curiosities. This beautiful hike takes you on the interpretive path of Naves, a typical village, to discover landscapes and the link between geological and human history. From the cemetery parking lot, the path starts on the right and climbs towards the Serre du Cocu (cuckold ridge) where a first stop will allow you to enjoy the Naves Cirques, and where you will find the first interpretive board about Jurassic limestone and marl. Continue on the path up to the reservoir above the cemetery. A new board is waiting for you. Continue on the path along the side of the Serre du Cocu. (new board on the Serre de Barre) up to a pass from which the view on the Chassezac Valley is stunning. At the crossways, turn right up to the Alauzas road where you will find stops 5 and 6, presenting the Orcières Fault and a stratigraphic cross-section. Follow the tarmacked road on your left up to the hamlet. On your way, admire the gorgeous chesnut grove (stop 7). At the hamlet, take the path on your left. Carry on straight ahead. Stop 8 is about terraces and water management on the slope. The path goes downhill towards Naves, first through a chesnut grove, then in a coniferous undergrowth. Lower, those plants give way to maquis (stop 9). After stop 10, devoted to karst, the path goes out of the woods onto an overhang above the Bourdaric Brook (be very cautious!). Continue leisurely your way down towards Naves (stop 11), while enjoying the sights on the village and Southern Ardèche. Take some time to tour Naves, a pleasant typical village with authentic narrow streets, then take the tarmacked road again down to the cemetery parking lot, your starting point.

What are the oldest European monuments? No doubt the Dolmens and Menhirs, the emblematic "monuments" of the Megalithic era. They were the work of the earliest farmers and breeders living in Neolithic Europe, the last prehistoric period.

A short walk to do with the family starting from the hamlet of Chadouillet in the town of Saint-André-de-Cruzières. P – From the Place du Planet, go to the signpost for Chadouillet. Chadouillet - Follow Les Courpatières 1,3 km ().Take the first left on the Chanisse path. Continue on the small tarmac road that becomes a track. Cross the bridge and follow the path bordered by low walls. Les Courpatières - Follow Carissoules 0,5km. Take the path on the right, then on the left to go down through the oak trees towards the Cotepatière resurgence. When you reach the river bed, follow it for a few metres on the left, then go up a path on the right. Carissoules - Follow Chadouillet 0,9km. Turn right onto the path from which you can see the bell tower of Saint-André-de-Cruzières, and return to the starting point

On the first slopes of the Cévennes, the hamlets and houses of Ribes are spread along “faïsses” or terraces, home to vines and olive trees. P - Turn left opposite the signpost. Follow the tarmac road for a few metres and turn right onto a dirt track, then turn left down the steps to the Alune stream. Cross the stream at a ford, turn right and walk along the river until you reach a small submersible bridge where you can cross back over the stream. Twenty metres after the bridge, turn right onto a path that leads up to the village through chestnut trees and vineyards. When you reach the tarmac road, turn left to leave the hamlet. Before the bridge, turn right between the houses and go up to the street. Turn left to Mas de Laffont.   Mas de Laffont - Follow Prades 2,6 km, Ribes 0,6 km. Pass the Flaüts fountain and then take the tarmac road to the right. At the hairpin bend, turn right. After a bend, pass the rubbish collection point, take a path on the left that climbs between the vines.  Cross over the tarmac road and take the steps between the houses up to the church in the middle of Ribes.  Ribes - Follow Prades 2 km, Saint André Lachamp 6,9 km. When you reach the first houses, turn left to take a small alley in the hamlet of Les Clots. Take the tarmac road at the hairpin bend. Take the road to the left that goes up to Le Serre.  Le Serre - Follow Prades 1,4 km. The road winds upwards to the last houses. The trail continues via steps on the side of the mountain and then curves right. As you begin to descend, ignore the track to your left and continue along the path. After descending, join the track, and go left until you get to Prades.   Prades - Follow Info Rando 2,7 km, Ribes 1,6 km. Continue along the path on the right. About 100m further on, take the path that leads to the hamlet of Labeaume. Pass through the entire hamlet then carry on until you reach the hamlet of Le Gelly via the tarmac road.   Le Gelly - Follow Info rando 1,2 km, Joyeuse 4,5 km. Take the road and at the first crossroads, go right. Continue straight on until you’re level with a stone cross. After a chestnut grove, at the stone cross, leave the road via a “calade” or stone path down to Le Prat.  Le Prat - Follow Info rando 0,6 km. At the crossroads, go down the steps on the left and follow the path that brings you back to the multi-purpose hall.  

As early as the Middle Ages, the Alune River was used to turn numerous mills for the region’s inhabitants. There are still four mills along the trail that used the water held back in a “sluice”.

In a setting with oak trees mainly predominating, the hiking trail leads up to the highest point of the Serre mountain, at an altitude of 549 metres, providing some truly exceptional views.

It is a collection narrow cobbled streets that lead to village square with an 11th century church and views across the typical terrain of the southern Ardèche. Situated between two lanes, the house can be accessed by the lower road for the Blanche de Paysac and the Pitcholine rooms. From the upper road, via a lovely vaulted ceiling, you can access the Rougette and the Frantoio rooms. A particular feature is a beautiful stone spiral staircase that serves the family suite and the dining room. In the central part of the house is the Library lounge and Wellness area. At this level, under a high canopy, there is a fountain and access to all parts of the house. Then cross a small stone bridge that spans the lane, to gain access to the pool and gardens. As soon as you cross this little bridge, you will fall under the charm of this green haven of peace. You will first encounter a small covered seating area where you can to sit quietly enjoy a drink, read or just contemplate life – regardless of the vagaries of the weather. Next is a lovely arbour offering protection from the sun when the shade of the centuries-old mulberry trees is insufficient. Breakfast and dinner served here. A little further on there is the boulodrome where you can test your skills at pétanque. The best teams can compete to win an appetizer on the House! A pool of 12 x 5 m will allow you to do a few laps, relax and freshen up after your muscles have been stretched by one or the other sports activities offered in the surrounding area. For a quieter time, you can wander through the rest of the garden where over 500 carefully chosen plants delight the senses. Or merely sit a while under an olive tree and enjoy the views across the roofs of the old village to the distant horizons.

The source of the Chassezac River is in the Lozère at the foot of the leafy hills at an altitude of 1503m. It runs into the Ardèche upstream from Vallon Pont d'Arc.

These statues were made to be seen, from outside, in the garden around the house of the artist. Thus the idea came up, located in front of the home of artists and craftspeople from Chandolas, Pépit'Art. Alphonse Gurlhie was born in 1862 in Chandolas. He was one of those colourful characters that marked their era. Like the “facteur Cheval”, his work marks an important phase in the history of Outsider Art.
