Very pretty hike above Archail. Superb panorama throughout the walk as well as at the top. Magical passage on the Pas d'Archail, between the summit of the Pic de Couard and the Cucuyon. Very pleasant setting. The departure is from the village of Archail. The road to the village is quite narrow and there can be snow or ice in winter. Arriving in Archail, park in the main square next to the church. Go up the road to the left of the church then turn right at the fork shortly after. If the road is not blocked, there is the possibility of parking a little further away in a small car park at the Vieraron dam. At the Vieraron dam, leave the tarmac to continue on a wide path. Ignore further on a departure on the left and continue straight to reach a track. Cross the latter and go straight to find it higher. Cross the track again to take the path that climbs opposite and reach a complex intersection. Turn left on the path which begins a series of bends further on before reaching Pas d'Archail where there is a refuge and an old shepherd's hut. Continue on the right, pass in front of the refuge then leave the track to take a path on the right. After a few bends, the path widens and the slope softens as it crosses the managed biological reserve of Pic de Couard. Turn right with the path; the slope becomes steeper and the path climbs in bends to the summit of Pic de Couard. There is little signage and if you lose the path, head towards the ridge to the left of the summit. The return is by the same route to the village (D/A).

Starting from other three villages (Draix, la Javie, Le Brusquet) served by this route, you will discover the famous Terres Noires. Starting from Marcoux, cross the Bourg river to climb a long track to the top of the Emporte sources. From Marcoux, cross the river in the village to climb a long track to the top of the sources of the Emporte. A long path begins, alternating between fast and technical sections to finish in the black earth. Then go back up in the village of Draix, water point at the fountain, access to the ridges is made by a track. The return is made by a track to the Javie to finish by a balcony path to reach the starting point.

Family hike to discover one of the inspiring works of the artist herman de vries* located at the foot of the Dourbes bar. Le sommet des philosophe is part of the project traces a series of gold leaf engravings on stone. These engravings, made from 2001, are spread over several sites in the Digne region; searching for them is a very poetic way to discover this region. herman de vries* is a naturalist by profession. His view of the world is strongly influenced by Eastern philosophy. For him, nature is sufficient in itself and does not need to be embellished by art: "nature is art", he says, because it is perpetual creation. Here, on a hillock at the foot of the Barre des Dourbes, the names of twelve philosophers have been engraved on rocks around the one bearing the word reau (real in Provençal). Their location materializes in space the distance between their thought and reality. This hike starts from the village square in Marcoux and takes you to the Limans ridge, which marks the boundary between the Bès and Bléone valleys. Beautiful views of the Tête de l'Estrop, Cheval Blanc and Pic de Couard.

At the start of the area of Le Brusquet, take the path to the forest house. You will then ride the famous Terres Noires. The return is mainly on singletracks (60%) very fun and playful.

A hike through high-altitude beech forests to reach the Dourbes bar and its magnificent ridge path with breathtaking views of the valleys. This mountain stretches its long limestone cliff, from north to south, for nearly ten kilometers. The view from the Barre des Dourbes is breathtaking. This hike also passes through the Trou de Saint-Martin. Starting from the Serre forest house, located 1 km after the hamlet of Dourbes, this hike is a classic that leads to the ridge of the Barre des Dourbes, at an altitude of 1700 m. Climb up the Pas de Tartonne, follow the ridge to the Trou de Saint-Martin, a natural cavity in the rock leading to the void, and go back down via the Pas de la Faye. Breathtaking landscapes!

This pass, at the foot of the imposing Cheval Blanc mountain, is a historic crossing point between the valleys. To reach it, a tunnel was carved out of the clue de la Peine using picks and blasting.

At the northern end of the Barre des Dourbes, the summit of Couar rises to almost 2,000m. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Ecrins and the Dévoluy massif!

Since 1922, our mill extracts extra virgin olive oil, a genuine fruit juice, only with mechanical means to olive oil amateurs’ great joy. For more than 40 years we have been making cosmetics and soap made in a cauldron just like Marseille soap. The harvest of olives is done manually with hand and automatic combs to preserve olives quality. Then, we proceed to the grinding of the fruit with a simple mechanical method, without the addition of chemicals or change in temperature. At the end of the grinding, we get an extra virgin olive oil with a free acidity lower than 0.8%. Our mill produces a local extra virgin olive oil. Our olive oil is peppery and refreshing which is specific to the aglandau olives (90%). Nearly 400 olive growers bring their olives to supply you with: - Green fruity olive oil - Local olive oil All our products are available at our shop and online shop: olive oil, homemade products, Marseille soaps… We also make basil, mint and lemon oils. Olive oil sold at the Serres, Orpierre, Sisteron and Laragne tourist offices. We offer visits of our soap factory from April to September by prior arrangement.

Taking the emblematic Blanc Martel trail without taking your car couldn't be easier, thanks to the shuttle bus and the Zou 450 regional line (ex BV1 )from Riez, Roumoules, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane. Shuttle service resumes on 28/04/2023. How does it work? The Zou 450 regional line links Riez to Castellane via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the Blanc-Martel shuttle bus takes you to the Chalet de la Maline, the trailhead. The trail ends at Point Sublime (Rougon). For your return journey, take the shuttle bus to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon and/or the regional line 450 to Riez or Castellane. Timetables... To ensure optimum operation, the timetables of the Riez-Castellane regional line (450) and the Blanc-Martel shuttle are coordinated. Online booking is highly recommended if you want to be sure of getting a seat! Please note that the shuttle does not return to Chalet de la Maline in the afternoon.

The Haute Provence Geopark was created in 2000 and was the model for the development of 120 Geoparks worldwide. It covers 60 municipalities in the Alpes de Haute Provence department. It gathers natural and geological sites and offers a journey through over 300 million years of Earth’s history. Sites like the ammonites slab are exceptional, even unique in the world. ​The Haute Provence Geopark is also rich in its intangible heritage that can be discovered through know how, craftsmanship and local products. Promenade Museum A park in the shade, waterfalls, gardens, art work, 300 million years of geological history told by fossils, Mediterranean and tropical aquariums, exhibitions and an art center (CAIRN). Geological sites The Ammonite Slab The most emblematic site of the Haute Provence Geopark. The 320 m² Ammonite Slab boasts over 1,550 fossils, the biggest being over 70 cm! This species allows us to establish that the slab is around 200 million years old. Ichthyosaur Reptile fossil, 90 million years old. Location : La Robine Bird Footprints 20 million years ago, the region of Digne les Bains was a sea basin. Birds walked on the beaches’ wet sand, leaving footprints that were later fossilized. Sea currents that sculpted the seabed 130 million years ago were also fossilized. Barles Canyons After several million years of erosion, the Barles Canyons offer amazing landscapes.

On the outskirts of the city centre, the Ferréols lakes offer you numerous activities. Free and open access to the artificial lake all year round. A Haute Provence Geopark site to discover by car, bike, bicycle or foot… On the road from Digne les Bains towards Barles, the canyon gets so narrow that it becomes difficult for two cars to cross! This rocky landscape sculpted by nature is even more enjoyable by foot. This geological formation is called “Clues de Barles” in French. The word “clue” comes from Latin “clausus” which means “closed”. Such a small canyon is, therefore, a pass way almost closed, made by a river. The Barles Canyon was made by the Bès River, within limestone dating from the end of the Jurassic or from the early inferior Cretaceous period (i.e. between 155 and 140 million years). The Bès River made its way through vertical and very thick layers, taking advantage of the rock’s weaknesses. At the beginning of the Barles Canyon, contemporary artist Andy Goldsworthy installed one of his stone “Sentinels”. This sculpture is part of the land art itinerary “Refuge d’Art”. Geology around Barles Many geological expeditions were ran around Barles. This location is known worldwide for the diversity and the complexity of its tectonic and sedimentary phenomenon. From the XVIIth Century, at the time of local scientist and philosopher Gassendi, scientists were intrigued by the peculiar layout of rocks in the region of Digne and by the origin of mysterious fossils. However, geology developed in the Southern Alps only at the beginning of the XIXth Century. Before the end of this century, discoveries were made easy by the mountains’ nudity. Cleared by centuries of culture and collect of wood, they let outcrops, slabs and fossils show. Right after 1945, Barles became a base camp for stratigraphy and tectonic specialists, paleontologists…

At 1880 m, the Crête de Géruen offers a magnificent panorama. From its summit, it is possible to discover the highlands of the Provence. The view  on the various surrounding reliefs is also magnificent (the Monges, the Montagne de Lure, the Cloches de Barles ...).

The Colline des Lutins is a discovery and playful farm. A place of appeasement and relaxation for the whole family located in the heart of nature on the border of the Alpes de Haute Provence and Hautes-Alpes. Here you can discover the farm's animals, most of which roam freely: pigs, goats, a miniature donkey, pony, geese, hens, roosters, ducks, rabbits... If you're passing through Barrême, have you ever noticed the large brick chimney soaring into the sky? It's a perfume plant distillery. The distillery was built in 1905 by an internationally-established German company. Set in the heart of the machinery, the museum is dedicated to the surprising history of this factory and the distillation of lavender in the Grasse hinterland. Aromatic plants, essential oils and games will awaken all your senses. Also worth a visit is the museum store dedicated to lavender and perfume plants. Events are held regularly in July and August.

The mountain Apollo (Parnassius apollo), this butterfly with a hairy body is subordinate to the mountainous climate. Its caterpillar eats succulent plants: stonecrops, houseleeks. At the end of the larval period, it forms a loose cocoon slightly buried before turning into a chrysalid. The mountain Apollon hibernates in the egg state.
