This is quite a challenging route on which you will discover the tourist woods and their chapels and countryside, go through Ragnies, the ‘Most Beautiful Village in Wallonia’, and explore the mediaeval city of Thuin. The Thuin belfry and its hanging gardens, the Biercée distillery, Chêne farm, etc. It goes without saying that there are many impressive sites along this walk. At the Maladrerie, a ‘potale’ and a chapel tell of the cult of Saint-Roch, who was prayed for to ward against the plague. In the centre of Thuin, the top of the climb through the hanging gardens offers a superb view over the Sambre and Biesmelle valleys. The paved streets raise the difficulty of the route. You then walk through the Grand Bon Dieu woods with its art and sports installations. 

Take the stairs at the foot of the imposing Saint-Ursmer church, the doyen of the kingdom’s churches that is still active. Go through the porch that enables you discover the streets of the mediaeval city, and guides you to the religious building. Open the door. The light and sobriety contrast with the small crypt. When you leave, stroll through the mediaeval garden by the Romanesque tower. The walk continues to the Sambre through the wood and countryside. At the end of the walk, pay attention to the small Baroque details of the Portelete, and walk past the Abbey farm, which was founded around 654 by Saint-Landelin.

A very picturesque walk to Lobbes and Hourpes through their countrysides, their wood and their tow paths. Entities that are as historic as they are charming. Listed as a site in 1990, the Tourette wood mill still has its turbine, as well as many farming outbuildings. The Portelette, the gate to the old abbey of Lobbes, is unique with its meticulous Baroque details. Enjoy a culinary visit to the honey museum with the fascinating world of bees and the techniques and traditions of bee-keeping, glass hives, etc. The hamlet of Hourpes, a key location for the metallurgy industry in the 17th century, is worth a detour with its astonishing château and workers’ houses. 

A very varied route via Lobbes, Fontaine-Valmont, Leers-et-Fosteau, Ragnies and Thuin through their historic sites, wooded and rustic landscapes and flowery riverbanks. Walk near the Saint-Ursmer collegiate church, the oldest church in Belgium with its Romanesque crypt. The Fosteau château will take you back to the 14th century with its majestic setting and French-style gardens on successive terraces down to the lake. At Ragnies, listed as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia’, the atmosphere is bucolic with the Mediaeval Chêne farm, the Biercée distillery which is the only unprocessed fruit distillery in the country, etc. If you feel like it, do a little shopping for local produce in the shops on Rue ‘t Serstevens in Thuin.

Starting from Ragnies, which is listed as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia’, set off to discover its church, presbytery and imposing farms steeped in history such as Mascart château, Henquin farm or pretty Hensal farm with its beautiful park containing rare species of tree. At Chêne farm, dating back to the 10th century, go back in time with a chivalric journey through this Mediaeval building and its Hildegarde garden. Not far from the path, the Biercée Distillery, located in the imposing courtyard farm, once the law court of Lobbes abbey, offers you brandies and liqueurs made from fresh fruit.

This mountain-biking route offers a pleasant athletic hike through our beautiful region of Thudinie that alternates between woods, countryside, farming landscapes, churches and tourist sites. There are very beautiful views over the Sambre. Walk near the Baudribu farm and fields, Biesme-sous-Thuin church, ‘Le Gibet’ hamlet, Notre-Dame des Carmes church, etc. Between the different tourists spots, the route runs through magnificent loamy landscapes and fields of crops. Walk by Aulne abbey and its majestic abbey church nestled in the Sambre Valley. Crossing through the paved streets of Thuin and climbing through Waibes Wood with its steep slopes promise to be challenging.  

The monks who founded the majestic Aulne abbey chose this site for its peace and quiet. Leaving from the abbey entrance, on your stroll you will appreciate the ‘Valley of Peace’ in all its diversity. You will walk along the ruins and go past the old main entrance. Just before entering the wood, you will see the pretty blue stone columns of the abbey farm. The path will also take you through the fields and lead you past the pools that were the source of all the abbey’s water through an underground hydraulic network. To finish your day’s relaxation, take advantage of the many open-air cafés, the crazy golf and the boat rides nearby.

Listed by UNESCO for its remarkable VIIth century architecture, the belfry of Thuin guarantees a stunning panorama of the region. Visitors get the opportunity to watch a movie retracing its story.

  The belfry at Thuin, built in the first half of the 17th century to replace a previous bell tower that had fallen down a few decades earlier, is the only remnant of the collegiate church of St Lambert and St Théodard, which was destroyed in 1811. Although it had the function of a chapter house, the tower of the collegiate church was also the municipal tower – and hence a genuine belfry, making it the only one in Wallonia to assume these two functions from the outset. This dual vocation can be seen on the south façade of the building where the coats of arms of the mayors of the time the tower was constructed are visible just above the niches dedicated to the saints protecting the church. The sturdy belfry overlooks the upper part of town with its 60-metre silhouette, built from sandstone blocks broken up by courses of limestone. The upper section features large sound holes topped by the dials of the clock. It is capped by a bell-shaped spire surrounded by four polygonal pinnacles. After losing its top in a storm in 1662, the belfry was repaired as part of major works carried out in the middle of the 18th century. Having a dual function meant that the belfry was not demolished with the remainder of the religious building, of which traces of its roof are still visible on the east side of the belfry. A gallery has been added to what became an isolated tower. The belfry benefited from a full restoration programme at the beginning of the years 2000. Declared Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia, Thuin's hanging gardens offer a rare landscape, enriched with a contemporary art trail.

  The site of the "hanging gardens" features a succession of terraces between which alleyways wind their way, linking the historic districts of the upper town with the lower town. The origin of these gardens on a slope of the Biesmelle probably has to do with the building of successive city walls, either from the 12th century for the south slope or in the 14th century for the east slope. Relatively prized for several centuries, this type of enclosed garden, sometimes planted with vines, lost its attraction during the second half of the 20th century with the growing lack of interest in subsistence gardens. This resulted in neglect, the deterioration of the retaining walls and various plots being separated out. These walls, usually built from sandstone and less often in brick, are currently being restored, in particular as the result of social and business integration initiatives prompted by a concern to pass on the knowledge and expertise in working with masonry and lime.
