The monks who founded the majestic Aulne abbey chose this site for its peace and quiet. Leaving from the abbey entrance, on your stroll you will appreciate the ‘Valley of Peace’ in all its diversity. You will walk along the ruins and go past the old main entrance. Just before entering the wood, you will see the pretty blue stone columns of the abbey farm. The path will also take you through the fields and lead you past the pools that were the source of all the abbey’s water through an underground hydraulic network. To finish your day’s relaxation, take advantage of the many open-air cafés, the crazy golf and the boat rides nearby.

Admire the main remnant of the Abbey. The Gothic-style church founded in the 13th century was modified with the addition of a choir and transept over the following centuries.
The main entrance to the former fortified wall, it comprises a bas-relief “Lactation of St. Bernard”. The wording at the bottom may be translated as: “Landelin had these buildings erected with the title Aulne (Alder), as a tribute to the trees in the surrounding area.”
Round off your walk in the countryside with a glass of ADA, a beer featuring the label “Recognised Belgian beer”, “Blanche de Charleroi”, “Chérie” or “Sambrée”.
Founded by St. Landelin as a Benedictine abbey in the 7th century, it became a Cistercian establishment in the 12th century. Known as “Aulne the Rich”, it came to a grim end on 14 May 1794. Explore these remarkable remains and discover its troubled history.
