La Voulte-sur-Rhône is the starting point of the Dolce Via route. You leave ViaRhôna to cycle into the Eyrieux valley in pursuit of the old locomotives. Your adventure in the footsteps of the old railway line begins in the middle of the peach orchards where you begin a spectacular and gentle climb up the valley to Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux. Add the view of the valley, its river, its villages perched on the other side and your ride becomes, from the first strokes of the pedals, an enchantment. And the journey has only just begun... The route is signposted "Dolce Via" and is laid out on a former railway line, alternating between greenways with gore (granite sand) or bituminous surfaces and low-traffic roads. The gradient is minimal (1%). The beautiful Corten steel railings (rusty appearance), not only aesthetic but particularly welcome to avoid any risk of falling along the many steep slopes of the route, are a reminder of the route's railway past. Be careful crossing the departmental road 120 when arriving at Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux before reaching the station.

As soon as it leaves Le Cheylard, the cycle route changes its scenery: the Dolce Via, with the Eyrieux as its main thread, now runs into the steep valleys of the Boutières. If today the route can be travelled by bike without effort, imagine for a moment the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which is the result of a real technological feat due to the nature of the terrain. The last vestiges of this extraordinary railway past, the viaducts, tunnels, bridges and trenches, all carved out with the strength of your wrist, accompany you to Saint-Agrève. The scenery changes on this side towards the north-east. The cycle route, still on greenways, gets higher and higher and every pedal stroke is a wonder. Five viaducts, two bridges and three tunnels later, the landscapes of the Boutières and the Monts d'Ardèche, with the Mont Gerbier de Jonc and the Mont Mézenc in the background, await you. A nice reward before arriving at the pass and crossing the mountain by the Nonières tunnel, the longest of the Dolce Via with its 320 metres (lit!). You can then peacefully drive the remaining 12 km to Lamastre on almost freewheels. Get on board the Mastrou, a genuine steam train, and follow the Doux Valley uphill to Lamastre then, all the way back, downhill to Tournon-sur-Rhône. Follow the directions to Saint-Félicien and stop at Arlebosc. 1. 12,4 km On leaving the village fork right signed up Boucieu-le-Roi. 2. 15,9 km Just before crossing the bridge of the river Doux, go straight on along the bottom valley road. 3. 21,5 km At the railway station turn left up towards the main road without crossing the river. 4. 21,9 km Follow the main road on the right side for a few kilometres. 5. 24,5 km Turn right onto the D534 towards Saint-Barthélémy-le-Plain. 6. 26.4 km As you enter Saint-Barthélémy-le-Plain, turn left onto the D238 towards Tournon-sur-Rhône7. 31.7 km Cross the bridge over the Doux to find the station on the other side.

This leads to Chemin de Robinson. Turn right onto Chemin de Laplat. Cross the road and enter the Fédération de Pêche parking lot. Take the left-hand path and follow the loop back to the Petite Marquise canal. Turn left and follow the canal (which is on your right). Cross rue Auguste Giraud. Continue ahead on the path. At the end, turn right, then left to reach the start of the allée Adolphe Pegoud. Take a few steps to your right and you'll be on Avenue Jean Clément. Turn left and stay on the sidewalk along the canal. Avenue des Baumes is the continuation of Avenue Clément. At the intersection with rue Paul Gataud (on the left), cross Avenue des Baumes and continue along the sidewalk. Pass the soccer pitch, the veterinary clinic and the tabac Presse. Go onto the path opposite between two walls, called pont des amoureux then down to the river where you cross the lovely little bridge.2 - Pont de Duron - 485 m Follow Le Serre 2.9 km Gilhoc sur Ormèze 6 km Keep on the small road through meadow and cultures going down to Ormèze. After crossing the lovely bridge over the river, the road goes up towards the hamlet of Bosc. Turn right onto a path going through the hamlet then go up through a wood of chestnut and pine trees. 3 - Le Serre - 550 m Follow Saint Sylvestre 5 km The path overlooks the glen of the stream Peyremaule then emerges into a grove of chestnut trees coming out at la Chapelle. Take the track going down facing the glen through orchards then woodland. When you get to the place called Bogiraud turn right immediately and follow the path along the hillside. 4 - Les Terres - 479 m Follow Turlet 2.3 km Colombier le Jeune 3.9 km When you come to the small road go uphill then leaving it behind you when you reach a path going straight ahead. 5 - Issartier - 430 m Follow Turlet 1.1 km St Barthélémy le Plain 7.7 km 6 - Blenon - 428 m Follow Turlet 700 m St Barthélémy le Plain 7.3 km Take the path emerging onto a small road. We can see chequered black basalt and white limestone’s stones, which are found in lots of villages in our territory. Geologically, Rochemaure castle was built in a strategic location. Coiron plateau’s basalt and Cruas limestone quarry were used to supply the construction of the castle and the lovely old village. We can admire spectacular views of the Rhône and volcanic landscapes.

A fortified and perched medieval site exceptionally preserved. Located on a rocky headland, in a water drop shape, the village dominates the Barrès plain, spotlighting the remnants of its medieval past. Visitor arrives through the Notables’ door, which is the main access; he can see the particular configuration that allowed defending it. Through the heart of the village, several stalls look like they are ready to open. The Dungeon (from the late 12th century), head office of the City Hall, highlights the limestone stone, in contrast to the chequered buildings that combine white and black stones of Coiron. Fortified village which is listed building as historic monument, Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès is also labelled as a “Village of character" since March 19th, 2012. This medieval village is perched on a basalt neck from the Barrès plain. There are lots of narrow streets, winding roads and houses in basalt. Built on a rocky headland overlooking the plain and the current road from Privas to Le Teil passing by Meysse, towards the Coiron plain, Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès is a good example of a fortified village, which is partially preserved and restored. It has six towers along the ramparts and four others (including the prison tower) protecting the castle. The dungeon is from the end of the 11th century, the additions of the castle have been added in the 12th and 13th centuries. We can see The Chambaud de La Tourette family’s heraldry, above the City Hall door, in the renovated buildings of the castle. Sir "Stéphane", a knight, would have built a fort at the Barry, in front of Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès in 925. Before the 10th century and according to the “charta vetus”, the diocese of Viviers created a foundation on the Gallo-Roman villa territory: the villa Artenica. In 1020, the Bishop of Viviers swapped with the Benedictines monks of Cluny the church of Saint Vincent with the church of Meysse. The Benedictines monks stayed almost until the French revolution. In 1905, Genton of Barrès took part of the first crusade. A disagreement between the Valentinois earl and the Bishop of Viviers about the suzerainty of the Barrès is set in 1213, to the benefit of the Bishop. Barry fort, sold to the Valentinois earl in 1256, is seized by order of the King in 1390, and returned in 1392. From 1424 to 1446, the Barrès, like the Valentinois, belonged to the Duchy of Savoy. In 1467, it belonged to the Royal domain. In 1574, Saint-Vincent was taken by the Protestant but it stayed away from the main disorders from the Wars of religion. It was the same during the French Revolution. The rampart was partially demolished between 1830 and 1905.

The Neck of Sceautres is the most important in Europe. There is a statue of the Virgen Mary at its peck. 130m above the village, the neck, plug of the old chimney of the volcano, allows us to discover the geology of the site. Between 6.6 and 7.7 million years ago, the relief was reversed following the birth of the Alps which generated the central massif. Lava flows filled the valleys and erosion caused basalt collapses. On the neck there was a castle which has completely disappeared today. The site is accessible to walkers, follow the signs.

Discover these dolmens and standing stones when you walk around the village of Saint-Laurent-sous-Coiron. On the educational trail (sheet 10 of the topoguide) you will discover these Celtic prehistoric curiosities: 8 Caussenard-type dolmens dating between 3300 and 1800 BC have been identified, such as the Devès de Serre dolmen from the end of the Neolithic (1800 BC) accessible by a gap of around a hundred meters from the path. At the 8th educational panel, move 100m away from the path following the panel to discover the Peyregrosse menhir (or Chante Epine) which has the particularity of being made of basalt.

Around thirty caves, some of which have two levels, have been carved into the cliffs at various heights. Access to this unique site is free. An explanatory sign (in French and English) is located at the entrance to the site, near the small parking area. Traces of the modifications made to these caves are still visible: beam and staircase anchors, niches, skylights, gutters, grooves, and benches. A path, still partially paved in places, served this village, founded around 1210. It had a chapel (Saint Catherine's Chapel, which is still maintained), located north of the castle and also partly carved into the rock. This medieval village had some fifty dwellings carved into the cliff of the crater of this extinct volcano; half of these dwellings are still visible and can be explored! The last inhabitants lived in the village around 1880—a hermit and a poor family, in a sheltered alcove on the southeast side of the cliff. The site has been inhabited for millennia; an oppidum (fortified settlement) existed across the valley, in Cheylard, in the 5th century.

It is the highest village in this area-from here you have a real birds eye view. At one time a fortified wall surrounded it, today just a few architectural elements remain including the ruins of its castle. Labeled "Village of character" since 2020. The old village entrance was found through an opening in one of the ramparts. The stone columns and door hanger facing south was most likely used as for pedestrian access. Its other architectural delights and beauty can be found in the village's natural landscape which is why the area offers many outdoor activities including: rock climbing (it is the site of the department's rock climbing center and school); speleology, due its famous underground network, one of the deepest in the region; its many hiking trails and equestrian centers. Villages and Cities of Character is an official label, issued by the Departmental Tourism Committee, with the aim of networking in its department all the municipalities with a remarkable architectural and landscape heritage with the aim of developing tourism.

It was the one of the oldest and most important fiefdoms of the Barons of Aps. Located at the foot of the Coiron, the village was fortified by the 14th century. You can imagine the form of the village by tracing the remnants of the defensive wall. The narrow streets give to the village its character. Northwards you can observe different volcanic formations of the Coiron. Its narrow roads divide the houses and a number of them are typical, or traditional habitats. The hamlet of the Roche Cherie found at the foot of the neck one can find the remains of a castle tower. A chapel has been constructed at the 19th century with basalt rocks. The interior columns of the church are believed to be a part of an older building. This chapel was in ruins due to the passage f time but thanks to a big restoration work.

Remarkable natural site - Basalt columnar. Of volcanic origin, the Coiron has the shape of an oak leaf, formed by basalt flows during volcanic eruptions that occurred. It stretches from the Escrinet pass to the Rhône Valley and dominates the limestone lands of the lower Vivarais. It stands out very clearly in the landscape by its black cliffs which we call Basaltic Organs. We will find them near our villages like St jean le Centenier, St Pons, Mirabel,… You just have to look at the landscape to find them. Here the basalt organs which form vertically when the lava cools are clearly visible. The slower the cooling, the more regular the prisms (organs) are.

Whatever your pace, you'll find plenty of tree-lined walks along the gentle Payre path that leads to the ViaRhôna, within easy reach of the campsite. The municipal facilities adjacent to the campsite are also at your disposal: For example, opt for a game (or several) of tennis (booking required) or table tennis and challenge the Boss to a game of soccer or volleyball. For solo stuntmen, there's a bi-cross course where you can let off steam in the fresh air; protected play areas for our children, and pools for everyone, with 3 pools of different sizes and depths.
