Birac-sur-Trec is located on a territory bathed by the waters of the Trec and Canaule rivers. Its strategic location has been coveted for centuries by many families of the region, after having passed successively into English and French hands during the Hundred Years' War. The seigneury of Birac is first mentioned in the 13th century. A castle and a church were built there at that time. You can see the remains of these buildings during this tour which, from the village of Birac, located in the first foothills of the Marmandais hillsides, culminates at 130 m, before descending on the sandy tracks of the Garonne valley. You will see other elements of the local heritage including the mill of Birac, a dovecote, the chapel of Bistauzac, and a wash-house. The first part of this route runs along the river Trec to reach the Filhole, a nature area in the town of Marmande. It then follows the banks of the Garonne and the dyke that surrounds the Lac des Prairies.

Numerous viewpoints, decorate this circuit where the irrigation lakes, very present, feed the agricultural cultures and in particular, in the north of the course, orchards of hazel trees and walnut trees.

Originally, the fortified town of Seyches had four town gates. Today, only one of them remains, the former tower of the medieval castle. Remodeled in the 17th century, it serves as a bell tower for the church of Seyches. This tower is built of ashlar. Covered with a flat tile roof, it has the architectural characteristics of this type of building. It is pierced by two levels of semi-circular bays, containing the bells. The access door to the tower is built into the wall connecting the tower to the church. A straight wooden staircase leads to the first floor where two doors open onto a passageway that linked the castle to the enclosure. This tour will then take you to the Rivailles wood, which is home to a large number of pigeon-houses, and to many of the lakes in the Marmande area.

Cross the old porch of Seyches, the gateway to the town and also the church tower, then set off to discover the woods and lakes, which are numerous in this region of the Marmandais hillsides.

A tributary of the Garonne upstream and downstream of Marmande, two small rivers named Trec and Gupie have given their name to this hilly area. There are beautiful climbs on winding roads and pleasant rest periods on long narrow plateaus. This route is particularly valuable for the panoramic views it affords of orchards, vineyards and woods punctuated by the traditional rural heritage of the Dropt and Garonne valleys.

The town of Gontaud-de-Nogaret remains marked by the many conflicts that have taken place within its walls. It was looted and ravaged several times in the Middle Ages, during sieges and enemy assaults. Visit this village organized around its rich historical heritage listed as a Historical Monument: its market hall, its castle and its church. Usually located in the centre of the village, the market hall is a very important place of life at that time. The Gontaud-de-Nogaret market is no exception to the rule: merchants and farmers meet under its wooden gallery and sell their products to the inhabitants. Originally built in the 14th century, it was rebuilt after the town burned down three centuries later. A few metres from the market hall, you will see the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame, running alongside the Renaissance castle of Gontaud-de-Nogaret and its medieval garden.
