Discover Val-des-pres, a Hidden Gem in Hautes-Alpes Provence

A very pleasant family walk to discover the valley between fields and forests along the river. On leaving Val des Prés, park at the Draye bridge parking lot. Take the carriage road to the left just before the bridge, passing the last houses in Val des Prés. The road then becomes a pleasant track through fields and forests along the Clarée to the hamlet of Plampinet. Ignore the first junction (the left-hand track rises towards a farm), and continue straight ahead on the asphalt road to a second intersection: at this junction, ignore the left-hand track rising towards the chalets and Col du Granon, and continue straight ahead ("grotte des 50 ânes" sign): the asphalt then gives way to a stony track descending through meadows on the edge of the forest: this track continues along the river to the hamlet of Plampinet. Once past the meadows, the track enters the larch forest and crosses the Granon torrent, then continues along the Clarée to reach a wide footbridge: continue along the track through the woods to reach a small clearing. At the end of the path, you come to the edge of the departmental road at the entrance to Plampinet. You can continue your walk through the village. Return by the same route.

The hamlet of Granon is in fact the summer cottages of the Val des Prés commune. Relatively uncrowded, the trail gradually winds its way up through the Bois de l'Infernet, making it a very pleasant snowshoeing itinerary. At the end of the Rosier de Val des Prés hamlet, park just after the Draye bridge, where a snow-free parking lot is on your left. Follow the small asphalt road to the last houses along the river. Continue along this track for about 150 metres: the snow-covered fields of the Draye reveal themselves before your eyes, and you'll need to take the second fork on the left (at this fork, old wooden signs tell you to keep your dogs on a leash). The forest track then rises slowly through a fir forest to the hamlet of Granon. For the more adventurous, it's possible to cut back by taking a small path that crosses the various bends in the track to the hamlet. The first old chalets du Caro appear, and you've almost reached the chalets du Granon, with the Chapelle Saint Jean Baptiste at its center. It's possible to continue along the track as far as the Col du Granon, but beware: the track may not be marked. On the other side is the Guisane valley and the vast ski resort of Serre Chevalier. Count on a 1000-meter vertical drop and a 3-hour 45-minute climb. The descent is by the same route.

Far from the busy paths of the upper valley, the Dormillouse mountain pasture is still untamed. Its alpine meadows have enchanted many. Take the path opposite the parking lot, which rises up through the forest and is indicated by a yellow "Col de Dormillouse" sign. The path winds up a series of switchbacks on a slightly steep ascent, continuing until you take the balcony on the left towards La Lauze. At the fork in the larch forest, take the left-hand path through a combe (La Lauze). At another fork, take the path through the scree (arrow: Col de Dormillouse) and climb up to the mountain pasture. Once you've reached the Pinatelle ravine, continue as far as La Bergerie: the vast valley opens up to you. If you prefer, you can continue up to the Col de Dormillouse, in which case the climb is 1100 m and takes 3h30. The more adventurous can continue towards the Col de la Lauze, which gives access to Montgenèvre, or cross the pass to descend to the Chalets des Acles and Plampinet.

A short hike through a pine forest, ideal on hot days to discover an authentic little village on the way to the Col du Granon. Starting from the hamlet of Le Rosier, this walk links the main hamlets of Val-des-Prés, Le Rosier, Le Serre and La Vachette, returning via the hamlet of Les Alberts on the left bank of the Clarée. From the Rosier parking lot opposite the Huttopia campsite, cross the bridge to the left bank of the river, then take the wide track to the left of the bridge. This runs along the Clarée for around 700 meters to reach Val-des-Prés and the beautiful church of Saint-Claude, which can be seen in the distance. The trail soon comes to a bridge and the Val-des-Prés bread oven. Cross the bridge to reach the town hall and village church. At the fountain opposite the town hall, continue straight ahead between the houses to reach the heights of the village. The asphalt lane then becomes a forest track which rises straight up to reach the forest, then bends to the left to climb steadily higher. Stay on the main route and ignore the small paths on either side of the track. The route soon crosses the imposing bed of the Torrent de la Ruine, marked by concrete and granite check dams designed to stabilize the floodwaters. Once over the torrent, the little path opens out onto a wide forest track which descends gently: take this track very briefly, then pick up the little path on the right, located in the first hairpin bend of this wide track. This path gradually descends for 400 metres before joining a new forest track: continue along this track until you reach the hamlet of La Vachette. Enter the hamlet of La Vachette, heading for the Church of Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation: just before it, at the narrow crossroads, fork left to reach the bridge and the riverside houses. Join the hamlet of Les Alberts: at the small crossroads at the fountain (after the bridge), take the small lane on the left towards the "chemin des noisette": a small carriage road that runs alongside the river and joins the hamlet of Les Alberts. This asphalt road "Chemin des noisettes" joins the hamlet of Les Albert after one kilometer, before crossing the Durance stream. After passing the fountain and sundial of the Kovacic house, the road leads to a small parking lot: turn right into the ruelle des Arbennes (indicated by a dead end). A few metres after entering the cul-de-sac, fork left to reach a small dead-end parking lot, and join the dirt track overhanging the parking lot: a short, steady climb is in order. Continue along this little path until you reach the bridge over the hamlet of Rosier and the Huttopia campsite parking lot.

This short, easy walk takes you along the left bank of the Clarée from the hamlet of Le Rosier to Pont de la Draye, the last hamlet in Val-des-Prés. From the Rosier parking lot opposite the Huttopia campsite, cross the bridge to the left bank of the river, then take the wide track to the left of the bridge. This runs along the Clarée for around 1km to reach Val-des-Prés and the beautiful church of Saint-Claude, which can be seen in the distance. The trail soon comes to a bridge and the Val-des-Prés "Chef-Lieu" bread oven. Don't hesitate to cross the bridge to see the sundial at the town hall and admire the magnificent porch of the Saint-Claude church, then return to the bridge to continue along the track that runs alongside the Four à Pain and the river. Ignore the small path on the left and continue along the track, which rises steadily in an S-shape: the track then narrows to the left, descending through the fields to reach the Pont de la Draye 600 metres further on. The dirt track then comes out onto the departmental road and the Pont de la Draye bridge. Stop at the fountain on the other side of the bridge, and return by the same route. You can also continue along the right bank of the river! To do so, cross the bridge and take the small asphalt road on the right, skirting the last houses on the Draye, where the road becomes a gravel track and continues as far as Plampinet.

Discover the entire Clarée valley from La Vachette to Laval!

Mountain bike trail around the hamlets of Val-des-Prés. Depart from the Pont des Amoureux, join the Alberts, climb slightly along a balcony path to Le Rosier. Continue along the Clarée on your left, reaching the Val des Prés communal oven, cross the bridge and descend to Le Rosier on the Clarée asphalt road. Turn right to climb above the hamlet on a carriageway, Take the left-hand path, which descends towards Briançon. Climbs and descents alternate until you reach La Vachette on the asphalt road. Cross the Clarée, then turn left at a fountain. This asphalt road leads back to the Pont des Amoureux trail on the left before Les Alberts.

Mountain bike route through the forests above the hamlets of Val-des-Prés and along the Clarée and Durance rivers From the Pont des Amoureux, climb up along the left bank of the Clarée. Continue to Val des Prés. At La Draye, switch to the right bank and climb up the Chemin du Granon, At the first bend to the right, continue left along a path. Return to Val des Prés, le Rosier and la Vachette, alternating downhill and uphill, sometimes technically. Crossing the torrent de Ruine is made difficult by a mudslide. Get off the bike to cross the torrent bed. Cross the road to Montgenèvre and climb opposite into the Bois des Bans. A large mudslide cuts through the Bois des Bans. From La Vachette, take route 41 back to the Pont des Amoureux via the Chemin des Noisettes. Descend close to the Durance (a very difficult passage) to Les Alberts. Cross the plain to reach the Pont des Amoureux.

Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

Terzo Alpini is a refuge located in the Vallée Étroite, at an altitude of 1780 m. It is part of the commune of Névache. The Vallée Etroite is part of the commune of Névache, and is a listed and protected site. Managed by Riccardo and Anna Novo, the refuge is open in summer from mid-June to mid-September, and in winter from mid-February to mid-April. It is also open out of season on weekends (booking required). For New Year's Eve, reservations by telephone only. Catering by prior arrangement. The refuge : Terzo Alpini welcomes up to 34 guests (20 in rooms and 14 in dormitories). The refuge has hot showers on every floor, summer and winter alike (hot showers cost €1). Both the small rooms and the dormitory are equipped with wooden bunk beds, making for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The refuge comprises 2 rooms for 2 people, 2 rooms for 4 people, 1 room for 8 people and a dormitory for 14 people. Accommodation 1/2 board, picnic baskets on request. The cuisine: At Terzo Alpini, Italian tradition comes first! Small cozy alpine hut, nestled at an altitude of 2223 m in the gentle Clarée valley. It is located on a mound between larches, high steep walls and beautiful valleys with rounded shapes. Originality of the refuge: near the refuge, you can spend a night in a traditional Mongolian house: a yurt of about 20 square meters, provided with 5 beds with real duvets. Meals and toilets at the refuge. Atmosphere and comfort guaranteed! All the contrasting atmosphere of this beautiful Cerces massif is there.

The Val-des-Prés Town Hall sundial was created in 2005 by Evelyne and Nobert PEYROT, a couple of sundial makers from Plampinet. With its neoclassical decor, this sundial features the motto of the Republic "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" and the village coat of arms.

The small chapel of the village was erected in a parish church in 1460. Since then, it has continued to grow and beautify itself. Restorated at the end of Summer 2012, it has regained all her trappings to seduce you! The Church of St. Claude is from the XVI and XVII centuries. It has a simple appearance, has many stucco decorations, beautiful paintings and frescoes inside. Having taken model on the cathedral of Embrun, which radiates throughout the region at this time, it has a bell tower of Romano-Lombard style.

Here's a lovely modern sundial made in 1998. It is signed by Evelyne and Norbert Peyrot, the valley's sundial makers, and by children from the school.

The Zarbula sundial is one of the most beautiful solar dials in the Clarée valley. Never restored, it presents itself as the dialer Giovanni Franseco Zarbula painted it in 1843. This sundial is a good example of the Zarbula style. The trompe-l'oeil, the faux marble, the exotic birds are features elements of this Piedmontese dialer having made several solar dials in the Briançonnais.

The new sundial at Les Airelles serves both as a hotel sign and as a solar time display. Made by Evelyne and Norbert PEYROT, sundial makers from Névache. The sundial's motto "Obliviscere malarum, profer optima" means "Forget the bad hours, prolong the best". It has a modern function: it serves as a sign for the hotel, while at the same time giving the local solar time. The hour table is encased in a ribboned ring, and decorated with an acanthus-leaved thistle or carline. The lower part features the fruit that gave the establishment its name: cranberries. The upper frieze features yellow cranberries with rounded blue acanthus leaves. Completed in 1997, the sundial was painted using the fresco technique of yesteryear. They also rendered the façade in a beautiful yellow ochre, and painted the door and window surrounds in trompe l'oeil, as well as the quoins, which simulate cut stone.

This dial had a hectic history. Originally painted by Zarbula and repainted in 1954, we see only the original dial, the exotic bird. This dial also has an originality: its motto in French and in three. On the sundial is written: "La vita es gaïro, Ùn ris, Ùn breath, Ùn weeping". "Life is a little thing, a laugh, a breath, a tear" according to a verse by Frédéric Mistral. The original dial (1852) was repainted in ochre in 1954, in particular erasing the original motto: "O Sun, thou appear, thou smile, thou console the earth." It was restored in 1994 by Évelyne and Norbert Peyrot, but without being able to revert to the changes of 1954. No signature is visible, but the exotic bird, characteristic of Zarbula, makes it attribute to it. This Piedmontese artist, enjoying a solid reputation to the point of being copied, has, from one valley to the other, expressed his talent to a clientele of owners "to the fact of things". Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation is the second parish church of Val-des-Prés built when La Vachette was an independent parish. It is a small church of Roman-Lombard sytle with Baroque decorations. This17th century church has rich paintings and statues.

Small private chapel restored and repainted in 1996. The chapel reveals an engraved stone dating from 1780. The St Jacques shell painted above the entrance pays tribute to St Jacques for his journey to Compostela (Montgenèvre being on the route of his pilgrimage). The cross of the chapel was restored in 2006.

The Obelisk was erected to the glory of Napoleon and inaugurated on 12 April 1804 It is located at the exit of the village of Montgenèvre and its history is linked to the construction of the pass road. The obelisk was blown up in 1835 by the Piedmontese and rebuilt by the architect Joseph Andreoli under King Louis Philippe. The stones used were cast and set with lime mortar and cement and bound together with iron spikes The original marble commemorative plaques, also destroyed, were replaced by bronze plaques, engraved in four languages: French, Italian, Spanish and Latin, which read the tribute paid to Napoleon Bonaparte and Prefect Ladoucette

Restaurant of typical high mountain pasture, located in Fontcouverte, a hamlet +1860m. Formerly a place where cheese was made, the Fruitière now operates as a restaurant, and is an unmissable stop in the higher Clarée valley. Anything from snacks to real meals, you will find housecooked, local food and moutain specialties. Open everyday in wintertime, summertime and All Saints' Day holidays. Booking in advance is recommanded for lunches, and necessary for dinners (dinners only in summertime). Access in wintertime is only on foot/snowshoe, or ski. 1h30 from Névache Ville-Haute. Discover our 3* family campsite on a human scale with 90 pitches including 20 rentals on about 2 hectares open from the end of April to the end of September. The campsite has a heated outdoor pool/ aquatic playground, canalplay for the little ones, mobile homes, chalets and tents with wood stove, pods and geodesic domes. Terzo Alpini is a refuge located in the Vallée Étroite, at an altitude of 1780 m. It is part of the commune of Névache. The Vallée Etroite is part of the commune of Névache, and is a listed and protected site. Managed by Riccardo and Anna Novo, the refuge is open in summer from mid-June to mid-September, and in winter from mid-February to mid-April. It is also open out of season on weekends (booking required). For New Year's Eve, reservations by telephone only. Catering by prior arrangement. The refuge : Terzo Alpini welcomes up to 34 guests (20 in rooms and 14 in dormitories). The refuge has hot showers on every floor, summer and winter alike (hot showers cost €1). Both the small rooms and the dormitory are equipped with wooden bunk beds, making for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The refuge comprises 2 rooms for 2 people, 2 rooms for 4 people, 1 room for 8 people and a dormitory for 14 people. Accommodation 1/2 board, picnic baskets on request. The cuisine: At Terzo Alpini, Italian tradition comes first! You can try Piedmontese starters such as anchovies au vert, beans in salad, petite tome, cold cuts, sweet and sour zucchinis and many other specialities. At Terzo Alpini, polenta has pride of place! It's put more than one exhausted hiker back on his feet! It's served with alpine cheeses, meat and sausage, or venison cooked by Riccardo. Of course, we also offer daily specials such as ossobuco, tajine and more... And for children, we have a special menu. Small cozy alpine hut, nestled at an altitude of 2223 m in the gentle Clarée valley. It is located on a mound between larches, high steep walls and beautiful valleys with rounded shapes. Originality of the refuge: near the refuge, you can spend a night in a traditional Mongolian house: a yurt of about 20 square meters, provided with 5 beds with real duvets. The refuge is not far from the listed "Casse Déserte" site. Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. In summer, you can come either by car to the parking lot of the same name some 300 m upstream from the refuge, or by shuttle bus, depending on the time of day and the season: Accueil Tourisme Névache. On the first floor, two small dormitories with single and double beds for 4 people, and two dormitories for 7 and 8 people with single or double beds equipped with sheets and comforters (bring your own sheets and comforter bags). On the first floor, sanitary facilities and hot showers (bring your own toiletries). In the dining room, which seats between 36 and 40, a beautiful Masse (Tulikivi) stove radiates a gentle warmth that you'll appreciate whatever the weather! For humid summer days or snowy winters, a dryer running on excess energy from the pico power station will dry your clothes and shoes in no time. Electricity is provided by a pico-power station fed by the Cula torrent, making the refuge completely self-sufficient. In this friendly environment, we'll let you enjoy simple, generous, high-quality cooking, using organic and local produce, so that young and old alike will be rested and refreshed before setting off again, backpacked, to explore the many hiking trails that this luminous Clarée valley has to offer.
