Camping Parc du Villard near Guillestre

This is an accessible hike with unobstructed views over the Durance valley.Exposed passages make this a hike not recommended for children. Go up the track and turn right towards St Alban along the postman's path . On reaching the hamlet of St Alban, stay on the grassy path that runs behind the gîte towards the Couleau stream. Turn left when you reach the wide track. At the next intersection, you can take a round trip to the stream: to do this, follow the Couleau stream. Otherwise, turn left towards the Serre cross. Follow the path along the canal through the forest and then across the meadows. At the sign for the serre de l'Aigle cross, turn left towards la Béguê and then straight on at the next intersection. Descend the road, then turn left along the wide track to the car park.

A hike to discover the nival stage (above 3000 metres) with relatively easy access conditions. From the car park, take the footpath on the left of the flat terrain, which leads here and there along the Alp stream with a regular and moderate incline. About 40 minutes further on, the path forks to the left and continues along the Prénetz ridge through black soil. Off a bend, the footpath leads to a terrace (the Selle valley) revealing three small mountain lakes that dry out some years.With the lakes to the right, the footpath continues a slight descent, the lowest point of which is the Rougnoux pass. The climb towards the summit starts properly from this pass. Numerous bends mean a relatively steep walk where the incline is generally between 30 and 35°. Shortly before the summit, a terrace will enable you to catch your breath.The return trip will be by the same path. A small circuit is also possible from the summit. Leaving the path by which you came on the right, take the stretch of path to the left as far as the Rougnoux pass.

Fenced in by mountains, this circuit takes you through a bucolic environment to the lake and the chapel. From the car park, go left onto the track leading to the « chemin du Lauzerot » sign.  Then take the uphill track on the right following the "Chemin du Lauzerot". Keep left on the narrow track which runs along the edge of the fields and continues uphill along the forest edge. At the next intersection, near the field, take the track on the left. After a few hundred metres, turn right and continue down the hairpin bend. When you come to a ruined house, turn left at the intersection. Follow the path and when you reach the intersection among the fields, turn right. Follow the track until you come to another intersection. Then turn left. Stay on this track and go past the bend. After the bend, turn right onto the path running downhill to the lake. Pass the area of small boulders and the stream and continue straight ahead after the bench. Take the next track on the left which leads to the chapel of St-Roch. Go past the chapel and continue straight ahead on the track which leads down to the road. Turn right onto the road which brings you back to the car park.

An excursion amidst vineyards and cultivated terraces. Take the path running left off the road leading from Châteauroux, and head towards Trinquière. At the intersection, take the path leading straight ahead and follow the Champ Mathéron mountain stream. Go along the narrow path above the fields of grapevines. Step over the Champ Mathéron mountain stream; after the bend, stay on the left-hand track. At the signpost, turn left towards Champ Mathéron and join the narrow earth path leading uphill. After a short ascent, go left towards Les Chamousses. Go into the field and follow the wall until you reach the other side of the parcel of land, then climb up along the field edge until you reach the road. Turn left down the road towards Fonfourane. A few metres after the crossroads, take the path on the right, following the GR route. When you come to the road, turn left following signs for La Trinquière. Go straight ahead, past the water fountain. After the bend and before the recycling point, take the narrow path running downhill to the right. At the intersection, turn right and back onto the track leading back to the car park.

The variety of new discoveries is what makes this short walk so rich. So many curiosities to be discovered with the family! From the car park, turn right. Follow the road-side and turn left towards Les Baumes. Go under the Les Eygas bridge, and then follow the path on the left heading towards Rabioux. From the path, join a track and continue past the houses. At the next crossroads at « Serre des Gayes », go right towards « Le Rabioux ». When you reach the fields lower down, follow the path leading uphill. Continue to head towards Rabioux and go past the interpretation trail ("sentier d'interprétation"). As you emerge from the forest, where the track reaches the fields turn left at the intersection. After a few metres, take the road on the right. From here, head towards Le Rabioux. Go along the road-side and then, at the Herbonne plateau, take the track on the left and carry on towards the chapel of Saint James.  Just before this, follow the path running downhill to the left towards Le Rabioux. For the return stretch, go across the Pont de Eygas.

A pathway steeped in history against a backdrop full of natural riches! From the chapel, cross the bridge over the Biaysse and immediately fork right and then left after 100 metres.  Take the gently rising path which twists and turns past some fine low stone walls and comes out onto a cultivated flat area.  Follow the path to the belvedere, making a there-and-back detour.  Follow the road right for 500 metres until you reach Pallon. Go through the village and, as you are leaving it, 100 metres after the wash house, take the track on the right which runs past a house with green shutters. The path drops back down to the chapel in Rame.

Easy circuit for beginners and families, in a place rich in history. The route starts just next to the hydroelectric power station. Head due south and go across the bridge spanning the Biaysse. Turn left after the bridge and follow the track At the other side of the plain, take the track on the left which leads back towards your starting point At the car park, continue along the road due north and leave it 300 metres further on, taking [a track] on your right At the intersection of the tracks, turn right along the Durance. Go around the right-hand shore of the lake which brings you back to your starting point

A mountain route with an escape along the banks of the Durance to discover the Vague du Rabioux Just after Châteauroux-les-Alpes town hall, turn left up rue sainte-Irieneé (D663). At the cemetery, skirt it to the right and head up the road to the right towards the 'Les Pins' camp-site. At Le Vazet take the hairpin road to the right, then the path straight ahead. At the road turn right towards the waterfall (DFCI G84). At the Auberge de l'Épinay road, turn right towards the Charançons gîte, Muandes car park and the Pisse waterfall. At the lookout, ascend to the left and then turn left a second time. /! At the hairpin bend, leave the track and take a path straight downhill. Ride along the canal and dismount in a few places. Then leave the canal to ascend 200 m to the right at the level of the torrent des Échirolles (steep climb) then turn left twice following the GR. Stay on the main track, then turn left onto the road when you reach the first few houses. /! Slow down on the downhill road: leave it at the hairpin on a track to the right. At the road, turn left downhill and then right through the hamlet of Les Rozans. Choose the most well-signposted options downhill as far as the road. At the D994H, ascend to the left, then after 300m descend to the right the road of Fontmoline in direction of the camp-site les Cariamas. 7200 m after the football pitch, descend to the roundabout on the right, take the 1st exit towards Briançon. After the bridge, turn right towards Les Baumes. After the railway bridge (Pont des Eygas), take the path on the left and stay on the road. At the pisciculture des écrins, turn right onto the route de la vague. At 600m, take the stony track on the left until you reach the chapel of St Jacques, then descend on the right to join the road. At the road descend to the left as far as the Vague du Rabioux and make a U-turn staying on the road Returning to the fish farm, cross the railway line and then the bridge to reach the village, staying on the road.

This itinerary takes you on a journey of discovery through scattered hamlets on the mountainside and beautiful Romanesque churches, while enjoying a panoramic view over the Durance valley! From the centre of the village, head north and pass over a stream. Continue on the D994h (Route d'Italie) then climb left towards Saint-Marcellin. Follow the "Coins du Monde" sign through the village. The ascent is gradual and becomes gentler as you approach the hamlet of Serre Buzard. Stay on the main road, which narrows as it runs alongside the houses and reaches a cross at a fork in the road. Now take a small track that descends to the right. The surface is not always smooth, so walk carefully down this section. Reach the Béguê fairly quickly, where the tarmac is more pleasant to ride on. Cross the hamlet of La Touisse and glide down to Fontfourane. Continue to Route d'Italie then return to Châteauroux-les-Alpes.

A pretty mountain-style loop on the upper section, which can be combined with the Pinées route. Just after Châteauroux-les-Alpes town hall, turn left up rue sainte-Irénée (D663). At the cemetery, skirt it to the right, past Les Pins camp-site and continue along the main road. Go straight on at Chapelle Saint-Roch. At Les Rozans, climb the steep slope to the right, then take the less steep road to the left. At the Gérards intersection, turn right towards Route de la Serbie (DFCI G83). Once you reach the hairpin, turn left into the undergrowth to follow the official Tour de Serre-Ponçon Gravel route. Take two left turns down the less steep options. Then turn right at the edge of the wood onto the path on the right, which is carpeted with pine needles. /! Several short sections with roots and stones. After the houses, continue to the right on the less visible flat track. Above Les Barthelons, descend to the left, then take the first right onto the road. After the hamlet, turn left towards the centre of Embrun. At the bend (D465) then at the Caléyère washhouse, ascend the road to the right. Then stay on the main uphill track. At the road (marked GR) turn right then left towards Mont Guillaume forest 5km. Then turn right up the track towards the electricity pylon (you can stay on the road for a gentler slope) and turn right again. At the Porte de la Forêt car park, take the route forestière des Fontainiers opposite. At the Route forestière du Bosquet, keep right (DFCI track G82). Before the steep climb, take the path on the right towards Châteauroux 9 km. /! The descent is quite steep. Join the track under the larches and descend to the right. Stay on the main road until you reach the hairpin, then /! watch your speed. At the hairpin, return to Châteauroux along the same road on the left.

Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

Nestled at the foot of the west face of the Sirac, this refuge was built in 2001 from wood and stone. Bright, spacious dormitories with duvets. Hot water showers and indoor toilets. From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Accessible in 2 hrs 30 mins from Gioberney car park, elevation 700 metres.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

This species is also called the stained glass moth. The upper side of its wings is green, with very dark outlines. Its antennae are unusual, in the shape of a brush. In the Department of Hautes-Alpes, the species is primarily found in the mountain pine forests. It tends to be active at dusk. During the breeding season (April-June), the female releases sex pheromones when the temperature rises above 13°C. Her eggs are spherical in shape and are 2 to 3 mm in diameter.

This ruin used to be a house. A window can still be seen on the side. Today, it has been covered by vegetation and some parts are virtually invisible. Other ruins can be seen along the route of the trail. Dry-stone walls are present. Some of them, around the edges of the fields, are enclosure walls. While others are retaining walls. These are called restanques in Provence. They were built in sloping areas to create crop terraces, holding back the earth.

Arable weeds are unique in that they live in fields without actually having been sown there. They are biologically suited to open environments and especially to regularly worked areas such as fields. They use various strategies, such as adapting their biological cycle and producing large quantities of seeds to make up for disturbances in their growing zone. Many of them are well-known, such as the poppy, cornflower and buttercup...

This stretch of water is a vestige from the last ice age 6,000 years ago. At category 2 lake, it is home to pike, carp and trout. The site was listed in 2012 as a Sensitive Natural Area of the Hautes-Alpes. An inventory study was commissioned by the municipality of Saint-André d'Embrun in collaboration with the regional conservatory for natural areas, CEN PACA, and its results showed significant diversity, with 350 species of plants, 110 species of insects and 52 species of birds.

The wingspan of this protected bird of prey can reach 1.8 metres. It can be recognised by its white underside and its large head, which is often chocolate brown. It feeds primarily on reptiles which it hunts on derelict sites, in rocky terrain and also in the mountains up to the the alpine grassland zone. The relatively small nest is often built in a pine tree. It overwinters in Sub-Saharan Africa and only returns in late March.

Pastoralism is an extensive management technique. The aim is to take the herds to "natural" areas where they can find food. This method helps to maintain open environments, which encourages specific biodiversity. Good management of a mountain pasture must allow the resource to be "exploited" without compromising its regeneration. It has numerous benefits for the environment, animal welfare and farmers alike.

Ecological corridors Fauna and flora Ecological corridors are spaces which connect different habitats. They are a kind of access road for biodiversity. These areas provide conditions that are favourable to the movement of numerous species. These movements enable them to colonise new habitats in order to support themselves and therefore stabilise their populations. Today, these corridors are a key factor at national level for maintaining biodiversity

Reed beds are officially recognised in France as natural zones of ecological interest in terms of fauna and flora. They are a true reservoir of biodiversity for avifauna (birdlife). This unique environment is protected. They are areas on the edges of pools and marches where reeds constitute the primary vegetation. Reed beds harbour the nests and broods or numerous marsh-dwelling birds and they are effective water purifiers, limiting water pollution. In addition, the species can withstand temperatures down to -20°C.

This small chapel stands on a rocky plateau overlooking the confluence of the rivers Durance and Rabioux. It was constructed with pebbles from the Durance and is roofed with stone slabs. « It must once have served as a waypoint for pilgrims from Italy making their way to Santiago de Compostella. They would take shelter here, pause for a while and gather their strength for the rest of their journey. Today, this chapel is no longer used for religious celebrations.» Monique MAYNé

This endangered species can reach 1 metre in height. Its enormous clusters of yellow and brown flowers can be seen during its flowering period, April to June. If the plant has been grazed or mown, there may be a second very late flowering on the remaining plant in September. In the Alps, there a various habitats favourable to the species, which colonises wide open areas in particular.

Located on the Grandes Alpes road at an altitude of 2300 m, the Napoleon refuge, built in 1858, is one of 6 refuges built thanks to a bequest from Napoleon 1st to the Hautes-Alpes department in gratitude for the warm welcome he received from the locals on his return from Elba. The refuge is not far from the listed "Casse Déserte" site.
