Discover CAMPING LE NAUTIC at Prunieres, Hautes-Alpes

This excursion, which takes you past the Lac de St-Apollinaire and its forested surroundings, constitutes a real pool of biodiversity. From the car park, follow the right-hand shore of the lake and take the track running uphill to the left, next to the water fountain. After the hairpin bend, carry straight on and continue along the track as it rises. When you come to the electricity pylons, turn left. When you are on the forest road, head left and fork onto the track on the right heading towards the Aiguilles de Chabrières and the Cabane de Joubelle. The Forest Centre ("Maison Forestière") is a short distance further up. Sheltered from the sun, with picnic amenities.

This hike takes in the views of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon and gives you a close-up view of the Aiguilles de Chabrière. From the ski pass ticket offices, turn left towards the forest to join a wide track. Turn right uphill, then left at the intersection. At the "Piste de Joubelle" post turn right onto the uphill path. Further on, this joins a track that you have to follow uphill. Once you reach a flat area at the edge of the forest, go left, winding through the forest to reach another track higher up which you must take on the way up. This leads to a clearing; cross it and then climb the slope to the right. The path leaves the forest at the "Serre du mouton" post. From here, continue uphill until you reach the first lookout. Go back up the ski slope for 200m, then turn left after some cliffs on a steep climb. Follow the ridge to the top of the station and continue as far as an orientation table beneath the majestic Aiguilles de Chabrières. The return journey takes the same route.

A varied walk through forests, cattle and sheep pastures and rock with a beautiful view of the Serre Ponçon lake, Les Oucanes and Les Aiguilles de Chabrières. From the car park, take the Joubelle forestry track.  After a bend left, follow it for 500 m. Then take a footpath that leads right and climbs rapidly into the forest, it is way tracked with an orange and a blue spot. Cross the Serre du Mouton pastures (caution, the arrows on the signs are not always correct).  After a flat terrain, the route climbs again to an unobstructed hillcrest from where it is possible to see the Serre Ponçon lake. The route follows the crest that leads to the top of the Chabrières chairlift and an observation point. Continue on the visible footpath (which is now ondicated by a blue spot alone) that descends slightly and continues on a ledge to link up to the foot of the corridor before climbing up again to the Chabrières gap. The footpath continues up and across until it reaches the summit that overlooks the Gap basin. From there it is possible to go to the summit of Chabrières, which takes 15 minutes (steep, non-sign-posted route. Not recommended with children) The footpath skirts the Oucanes and continues down towards the Rougnous plateau that it then crosses. It then winds into a valley and joins up with a footpath coming from the Font-Renarde mountain hut that is visible below. Continue on the footpath and link up with the ski slopes that lead to the car park.

A varied route through woodland, alpine pastures and rocky outcrops, with beautiful views of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Oucanes and the Aiguilles de Chabrières. From the car park, take the Joubelle forest path. After a bend to the left, continue for about 500 m. Then take a path that veers to the right and rises quickly through the woods. Cross the Serre du mouton mountain pasture. After it levels out, the path climbs back up to an open ridge from which you can see Lake Serre-Ponçon. The route follows the ridge that leads to the top of the Chabrières chairlift and an orientation table. Continue along the clearly visible path, which descends slightly and continues on a balcony to reach the foot of the couloir, which you will climb up to the Brèche de Chabrières (2280 m). The path continues uphill to the ridge overlooking the village of Chorges. The path bypasses the Oucanes and descends across the Rougnous plateau. Continue downhill via a series of switchbacks, then keep right at the crossroads until you reach the ski slopes. Continue downhill to reach the resort.

Below the Aiguilles de Chabrières, this route offers panoramic views of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon and the surrounding mountains. From the ski pass ticket office building, turn left towards the forest to join a wide track. Ascend it. At the "Piste de Joubelle" post continue opposite on a slight slope uphill. The balcony trail offers magnificent views of Lake Serre-Ponçon and the mountains of the southern Alps. Stay on the track until you reach picnic tables offering views of the lake and the surrounding peaks. The return journey takes the same route.

A world apart is waiting to be discovered in the shadows of the forest. Travel through it to discover the riches it has to offer. From the car park, take the track opposite which leads into the forest. After a few metres, take the path on the left. At the next intersection, head right towards Pierre Arnoux. At the next intersection, go straight ahead. Turn left onto the forest road ("La route forestière") and a few metres further down, take the path on the right (1). Follow the GRP (regional long-distance trail) route and then at the next intersection take the track on the right. You return to the forest track and turn right. A short distance further up, take the path on the left. Continue through the forest and when you come to the track again, go right and then take the path opposite (there-and-back walk to the spring). When you come to the top of the clearing, you have reached Pierre Arnoux. Make a there-and-back detour to the belvedere by going to the left of the mountain refuge. Back at the refuge, go along the silver birch walk to return to the car park. Then, turn left at the place called « l'Empouyère » (2)When you come to the spring, take the downhill track on the left (3). At the forested track in the forest of the district of Savines-le-Lac, cross the track and continue straight ahead. Cross the track again and go straight ahead. At the next intersection, when you come to the fitness trail amenities, turn right. (4) Then take the wooden walkway on the left. Go past the water storage facility and the aqueduct. Immediately after this, take the path on the left which follows the water course. When you reach the Savines-le-Lac road, go left. Follow the path that runs along the right-hand side of the road for 1 kilometre, which brings you back to the car park.

This flower-filled family excursion introduces you to a variety of farming features from a bygone time. From the car park, cross the bridge and at the next crossroads take the road to the left. Go past the houses and on to the end of the road. At the very end, take the path opposite. After passing the Maou Riou mountain stream, head down into the woods following the stream. Carry on downhill and then at the next intersection, go right onto the GR path. When you come to the road, turn right. When you reach the car park in « Charrière de la pisse », take the road on the right towards the church of St-Pélade. This will bring you back to the car park in La Coste.

A small climb above a picturesque village... From one bend to another the panorama is more and more stunning until you arrive unexpectedly on a plateau.From the carpark, start by following the Pisse torrent, channeled at the bottom by a dam which protects Réallon village. On the left, look out for the remains of the low dry stones walls which bear witness to ancient agricultural terraces. Then follow to the left taking a bending path that crosses a small forest of oaks and pines.

The route crosses the forest then the mountain pastures, leading to Pic de Morgon, from where the view over the two parts of the Serre-Ponçon lake is truly striking.From the Pierre Arnoux car park (1285 m), head for the Fontaine des Miracles track. Turn left into the track and go as far as the beginning of the path with some log steps. Follow the path right across the forest, then, after a few bends, climb up the ladders on a small rocky bar. Continue along the winding path and you pass a source just before arriving at the gates of Morgon. Once in the corrie, follow the track, then the path. You arrive near a shepherd’s cabin, respecting the peace and quiet, before tackling the ascent, which is often eroded in the cargneule rock. Don’t cut across the loops, which worsens the erosion. If you veer to the right you will pass a metal cylinder placed on the crest in the year 2000 at the same time as another that can still be seen on Mont Orel. Go up to the summit across the flat area below it. On the way back, follow the same route in the other direction. You can also follow the crest southwards towards Tête de la Vieille (short passage through the rock) to arrive at a path going down to the corrie and passing near Lake Morgon and the Saint Pierre sanctuary.

Admire this narrow valley from above, surrounded by majestic peaks that mark the entrance to the heart of the Parc des Ecrins. Cross the bridge then take the small road on the left by the bar called "le Mélezin". Follow the road uphill for about 500m then go straight ahead to the hamlet of Les Tomelles. Take a wide path and continue straight ahead on this path at the next intersection. About 200m further on, turn right at the sign for Les Granges onto a very steep track. Pass an isolated chalet and continue straight on for 50 m. Take the second turning on the right once you are back on a wide path that is less steep and not as stony. After several hundred metres on this wide track, take a small grassy path on the left. Turn left at the next crossroads, staying on a narrow track (watch out for tight strings). Join the track at the hamlet of Vaucluse. Turn right and follow the track as far as the sign for La Posette, where you turn right onto an uphill path. Continue until you reach a junction where you need to turn right via a more technical stretch. Continue on the narrow track, then turn left onto a stony track when the resort is in sight. Join the track and continue straight ahead on the road. Turn left after a stone house onto a grassy path which soon becomes stony. At the crossroads, take the track opposite then stay left at the next intersection. Follow the wide, flat road to the next intersections. Turn left at the crossroads at the end to take a track running parallel to the one used on the outward journey. Continue straight on at the crossroads to descend. Continue straight on at the Pont de la Curé.

Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

This area, which has been provided with picnic amenities, offers the most picturesque panorama over the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. In fact, the lake is 2 kilometres wide at this point, and in front of you are the Chapelle Saint Michel and the Pic Morgon, an iconic view of the lake. On your left, to the east, you can see Savines-le-Lac and its bridge. On the right, you can see the secret île de la Tortue.

This species is a bioindicator of its environment, that is to say, it signals the good ecological health of its living environment. It is greenish brown on its back and underside and, as its name suggests, its claws are white. It can grow up to 12 cm in length and can live between 8 and 10 years. Its outer shell has several small characteristic lateral spines. Its mouth is edged with a pair of lateral "teeth". It feeds on plants, small invertebrates, amphibians and dead fish. It can lay 40 to 200 eggs. The young hatch between May and July.

This small glacial lake nestles amidst larch forest at an altitude of 1,452 metres and its shores make for a pleasant walk. It forms a green backdrop and constitutes a fine vantage point looking over the valley. It lies at the end of a narrow road leading from the village of Saint-Apollinaire. The nearby campsite and the few tourist amenities in no way detract from the beauty and tranquillity of the site. There are two car parks, one on the lakeside, making the lake accessible to all and another further downhill on the road, offering a pleasant countryside walk. The lake is reserved for fly-fishing, and a no-kill policy is practised, that is to say, the fish must be returned live into the water. It is populated by chub and trout.

The Western Bonelli's warbler is a small passerine in the family Sylviidae. Greyish green-brown on the upper side, its very white breast and belly are an identifying feature. It can be differentiated from similar species by its dark legs, its flight feathers and wing coverts edged with yellowish green and its yellowish rump. An insect lover, it is migratory and can be found in the Les Écrins massif and around Serre-Ponçon between April and August.

The goldfinch is a small passerine bird. It has a brown back, black wings with a conspicuous yellow wing bar, a red face and a black and white head. It is found in forests but also in rural farmland and gardens. They form into groups which can often be seen on bird feeders. Essentially it is a granivore, or seed eater, and is particularly fond of the fruits of the globe thistle, (chardon in French hence the bird's French name “chardonneret”). Its beak is designed to winkle out the seeds from behind the spikes. The young are fed on insects, however.

The wood nuthatch is a small resident bird the size of a tit. Its speciality is working its way down tree trunks upside down. It nests in cavities in trees, most of which are excavated by woodpeckers (green woodpecker, spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker). When the entrance to the hole is too big, it reduces the diameter to a suitable size using mud which forms a wall. The aim is to protect its nestling from predators. This special characteristic has earned it the French nickname torche-pot (a reference to edging the rim of a vessel).

A feature of messicole plants is that they live among crops, even though not sown there deliberately. They are biologically adapted to open areas, and in particular areas that are regularly worked, such as fields. In fact, they use various strategies such as adapting their life cycle and producing large amounts of seeds in order to make up for the disturbance that occurs in their germination area. Many of them are common, such as the poppy, the cornflower and the corn buttercup...

Built on a hill in the Durance valley in the 12th century, it was destroyed in 1692. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and became a place of pilgrimage for the parishioners of Chorges and Prunières. Saved from the waters by its location, above the lake's highest waters, it is accessible on foot in the spring, when the lake level is at its lowest, generally between February and March..

The Golden Eagle is a large bird of prey with a wingspan of up to 2.30 metres. It is a predator par excellence, armed with fearsome weapons: rapid flight adaptable to the most acrobatic situations and powerful, sharp talons. Its sharp eyesight, eight times sharper than a human's, lets it detect its prey: from marmots and young chamois to ptarmigan and hare. The Golden Eagle is also a keen scavenger, especially in winter when food is scarce.

Scots pine is a softwood tree like fir, spruce, larch and juniper. It reaches a height of 30 m (under the best conditions) and is easily recognisable thanks to the orange-red tinge of its branches and the upper part of its trunk. Its short needles are grouped in pairs. Its cones, also known as pine cones, release winged seeds.

Access in 15 minutes from Le Rif du Sap.

What a strange idea to build this mountain refuge below the road leading to Gioberney, at an altitude of "only" 1397 m. In fact, it was already there more than a century ago, long before the road was built. This simple, sturdy building belonged to the Valgodemar Mining Company that operated in the area extracting copper and lead. When the business closed, the Club Alpin Français bought the building and named it after Xavier Blanc, in recognition of one of the founder members of the CAF, senator of the Hautes Alpes.

The construction of the chalet-hôtel at Gioberney started during the Second World War as part of a youth project. It enabled some young people the possibility of escaping obligatory work service in Germany (STO). The stones for the building were taken on the spot, cut and put together using cement mortar. At that time the road to Gioberney did not yet exist, and would only be built in 1963. You had to go up on foot, for « tired intellectuals », it was possible to be helped by a mule in order to reach the refuge. There was not much frequentation until the construction of the road... 

Mountain refuge located at the source of the Bléone river, at an altitude of 2,050 m in the village of Prads-Haute-Bléone. Accessible only on foot (3h walk). Numerous hikes available, including the Tête de l'Estrop at 2961m of altitude, as well as sport fishing, bouldering and slacklining. Accommodation and catering available by prior arrangement. Catering only at lunchtime. No reservations in July and August.

Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Access from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in 4 hours; elevation: 1245 metres.
