Le Camp de Bierre is one of the largest and best conserved Iron Age archaeological sites in the west of France. Established in the Middle Neolithic period on a rocky spur overlooking the Trun plain, this was a fortified settlement protected by a dry stone and earth enclosure wall. Abandoned during the Gallo-Roman period, the Camp de Bierre is a unique testimony to the history of human settlements in Normandy.

This rocky spur marks the border between the Bassin Parisien, located further east, and the Armorican Massif. From here, the landforms cut by the rivers create the characteristic landscapes of the “Suisse Normande”. The castle, dating from the 19th century, was built on the ancient remains of a fortified 12th century castle. It is still possible to see the towers which overlook the Orne valley. A 1.5 km route, equipped with numbered markers, will allow you to discover the natural and historical riches of the site.

The Vivier is a lovely path partly bordered in woods and horse chestnut trees.

This walk is an opportunity to discover open countryside and a surprising architectural heritage.

This loop, 14 km long at its longest point, forms a figure of 8 and offers many variations. The hiker can choose a route that suits them, as well as the departure point. The starting point has been arbitrarily fixed in Putanges on the Place de la Mairie.

Departing from Cambois, this circuit will take you to the strategic sites of the Battle of Normandy in the Poche Falaise-Chambois. This 26-km circuit passes Chambois, Aubry-en-Exmes and Tournai-sur-Dives where the battle ended, then Moissy, Saint-Lambert sur Dives, Coudehard, to finish at the Memorial at Mont-Ormel. The Mont-Ormel memorial, not to be missed, provides a detailed understanding of this historical circuit, and the course of the battle.

From Chambois to the Montormel Memorial, the route follows the paths where, in the summer of 1944, thousands of men died for the freedom of our country.

On the borders of the plain of Falaise and the Pays d’Auge, the area round Moutiers-en-Auge gives walkers a range of different types of countryside and buildings to see, giving good reasons to take off on this walk.

Two of the 20th century’s most iconic artists, Fernand Léger and André Mare, were both born in Argentan, Normandy, and spent their childhood and teenage years there.
