On the borders of the Charente, Charente Maritime and Deux-Sèvres, not far from the town of Paizay-Naudouin, stands Chateau Saveilles, a residence combining the characteristics of a fortified castle with those of a Renaisnce castle since the 14th century Come and discover the castle of Saveilles with its prison tower, its gun ports, its big tower and its loopholes, its archways and machicolations... The XIVth, XVIth and XIXth centuries stand side by side in the sunshine of the Charente, and you can discover and admire the exteriors, surrounded by a moat, comprising two square-shaped buildings with towers at their ends. The entrance courtyard includes a long outbuilding and corner towers. Despite a period of abandonment, the ravages of the French Revolution and the ravages of time, the castle of Saveilles retains a multitude of sculptures, mullioned dormers, decorated with mythological subjects, loopholes and archways, machicolations, and its 19th century chapel. Since the 14th century, the masters of the place have always succeeded each other, until today, by way of family inheritance. At the beginning of the 16th century, the ROCHEFATON family built the present castle on the land of Saveilles, which was part of the Marquisate of Ruffec. Among the masters of this noble house were the Marshals of CAUMONT LA FORCE and TURENNE, at a time when Protestantism made Saveilles an important place of the Reformation in Angoumois.
