Explore Camping Le Clos du Lac in Saint-Apollinaire

This excursion, which takes you past the Lac de St-Apollinaire and its forested surroundings, constitutes a real pool of biodiversity. From the car park, follow the right-hand shore of the lake and take the track running uphill to the left, next to the water fountain. After the hairpin bend, carry straight on and continue along the track as it rises. When you come to the electricity pylons, turn left. When you are on the forest road, head left and fork onto the track on the right heading towards the Aiguilles de Chabrières and the Cabane de Joubelle. The Forest Centre ("Maison Forestière") is a short distance further up. Sheltered from the sun, with picnic amenities.

A "summary" of what's on offer in Gravel at Serre Ponçon: forest tracks, sections of fun trails, landscapes, lake... From the start of the route at the resort of Réallon, descend to the car park and up the track to the right (route forestière de Joubelle). Just before the turning, turn left down the forest track towards the village of Saint-Apollinaire. At the balcony path, (viewpoint over the lake) go up the path to the left (Possibility of making a return trip to Lake Saint-Apollinaire by taking two right turns). After a very steep but relatively short section, continue left on the path towards the resort of Réallon. At the road, descend to the right (D609). At a hairpin bend, take the stony track on the left. Turn right at the track. At Les Praux, follow the track to the left. Continue on the main track to the right towards Réallon camp-site. Continue straight ahead on the path that rises slightly towards Réallon. Take the Villard bridge and continue along the track on the left bank of the stream. At the crow's feet intersection, continue to the right. At the road, turn left towards the Isle leisure centre. Before the Cure bridge, turn right onto the road on the left bank of the stream. After the tennis courts, go straight ahead on the chemin de digue, then take the path on the left. At the water extraction point, WC and car park, take the bridge on the left that leads to Les Gourniers. At the Mélézin restaurant, turn left towards "Le Bourget". At Les Tomelles, the road becomes a path. At Le Bourget, continue straight on. At Les Granges, continue straight on towards the camp-site via Les Casses. At Les Casses, take the track on the right towards Les Mallets. At Les Mallets, take the second right towards the resort of Réallon. At Pra Prunier, continue straight on towards the resort. When you reach the bend in the D609 road, turn right towards the resort. At the entrance to the resort, turn left into the car park.

Globalement à flanc de montagne cet itinéraire est ponctué d’une montée bien raide après le lac de Saint-Apollinaire. From the car park, take the Joubelle trail (in the forest). Follow it for about an hour. If you want to go to the Joubelle cabin, follow the indications on the right "cabane de Joubelle." If you want to go directly to Lac de Saint-Apollinaire, take the steeply descending path on your left to Saint-Apollinaire lake. The starting point for the Saint-Apollinaire Lake trail is just before the one for the Joubelle cabin. If you have reached the Joubelle cabin, you’ve gone too far. From the lake, follow the GR 50 (red and white markings), which partially follows the paved road, then leaves it via a path on the left (300 meters after the lower car park). Follow this path (Chemin des Faysses) along the mountainside until you rejoin the paved road below the station at the farm and place called "Forest du Bayle." From there, climb back to the resort on the road (800m).

A varied walk through forests, cattle and sheep pastures and rock with a beautiful view of the Serre Ponçon lake, Les Oucanes and Les Aiguilles de Chabrières. From the car park, take the Joubelle forestry track.  After a bend left, follow it for 500 m. Then take a footpath that leads right and climbs rapidly into the forest, it is way tracked with an orange and a blue spot. Cross the Serre du Mouton pastures (caution, the arrows on the signs are not always correct).  After a flat terrain, the route climbs again to an unobstructed hillcrest from where it is possible to see the Serre Ponçon lake. The route follows the crest that leads to the top of the Chabrières chairlift and an observation point. Continue on the visible footpath (which is now ondicated by a blue spot alone) that descends slightly and continues on a ledge to link up to the foot of the corridor before climbing up again to the Chabrières gap. The footpath continues up and across until it reaches the summit that overlooks the Gap basin. From there it is possible to go to the summit of Chabrières, which takes 15 minutes (steep, non-sign-posted route. Not recommended with children) The footpath skirts the Oucanes and continues down towards the Rougnous plateau that it then crosses. It then winds into a valley and joins up with a footpath coming from the Font-Renarde mountain hut that is visible below. Continue on the footpath and link up with the ski slopes that lead to the car park.

Below the Aiguilles de Chabrières, this route offers panoramic views of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon and the surrounding mountains. From the ski pass ticket office building, turn left towards the forest to join a wide track. Ascend it. At the "Piste de Joubelle" post continue opposite on a slight slope uphill. The balcony trail offers magnificent views of Lake Serre-Ponçon and the mountains of the southern Alps. Stay on the track until you reach picnic tables offering views of the lake and the surrounding peaks. The return journey takes the same route.

A varied route through woodland, alpine pastures and rocky outcrops, with beautiful views of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Oucanes and the Aiguilles de Chabrières. From the car park, take the Joubelle forest path. After a bend to the left, continue for about 500 m. Then take a path that veers to the right and rises quickly through the woods. Cross the Serre du mouton mountain pasture. After it levels out, the path climbs back up to an open ridge from which you can see Lake Serre-Ponçon. The route follows the ridge that leads to the top of the Chabrières chairlift and an orientation table. Continue along the clearly visible path, which descends slightly and continues on a balcony to reach the foot of the couloir, which you will climb up to the Brèche de Chabrières (2280 m). The path continues uphill to the ridge overlooking the village of Chorges. The path bypasses the Oucanes and descends across the Rougnous plateau. Continue downhill via a series of switchbacks, then keep right at the crossroads until you reach the ski slopes. Continue downhill to reach the resort.

Walking along former agricultural terraces which have been reclaimed by the forest, continue beneath the impressive Aiguilles de Chabrières to the Chalets de Vaucluse. From the ski pass offices, turn right into the tourist office. Continue through the heart of the resort until you reach a signpost. From there, continue left uphill between the houses. Once you reach a road, continue uphill. At the end of the road, take the flat path. At the intersection take the left fork. The balcony path then passes a ski lift. Pass it and continue on flat ground on former agricultural terraces. On the way down, the path joins a cross-country ski trail. Ascend to the left for 100m, then veer right to return to the balcony path. At the crossroads, leave the path on the right as you descend and stay on the main path. Leave the forest, cross a stream and join the chalets de Vaucluse. The return journey takes the same route.

Following moderately technical trails, this route leads through impressive larch forests beneath the Aiguilles de Chabrières. From the end of the car park turn right through the heart of the resort. At the signpost, continue left uphill on the track and then the road. From here, continue across the road on the path. Stay on the main balcony path until you reach a track. Ascend for 100m, then take the right-hand path to the Chalets de Vaucluse. Cross between them to reach a track and take it to the right for 150m. At the bend by a house, bear left onto the path. 300m further on, at the crossroads, turn left onto the balcony path leading to the Font Renarde hut. Continue below the Aiguilles de Chabrières, passing along the balcony path in the scree. At first the path becomes a wide track and then falls back onto a track. Take it downhill until you reach the centre of the resort.

Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

The Clot - Xavier-Blanc refuge, with 100 years rich in history, welcomes you in the shade of colossal trees for a relaxing break. Whether you are on the GR 54 footpath or out for a day's hike, you are sure to be charmed by this refuge, lulled by the murmur of the nearby Séveraisse mountain stream. Access in 15 minutes from Le Rif du Sap.

Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Access from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in 4 hours; elevation: 1245 metres.

The ascent to the refuge from Villard Loubière has become a great hiking classic. Small dormitories with duvets, convivial dining room, hot showers and large equipped terraces. A stop on the GR54 footpath that should not be missed. Ideal starting point for the Pic de Turbat, with 3000m of easy access. A stop on the Tour de l'Oisans (GR54 footpath) that should not be missed. The Western Bonelli's warbler is a small passerine in the family Sylviidae. Greyish green-brown on the upper side, its very white breast and belly are an identifying feature. It can be differentiated from similar species by its dark legs, its flight feathers and wing coverts edged with yellowish green and its yellowish rump. An insect lover, it is migratory and can be found in the Les Écrins massif and around Serre-Ponçon between April and August.

This small glacial lake nestles amidst larch forest at an altitude of 1,452 metres and its shores make for a pleasant walk. It forms a green backdrop and constitutes a fine vantage point looking over the valley. It lies at the end of a narrow road leading from the village of Saint-Apollinaire. The nearby campsite and the few tourist amenities in no way detract from the beauty and tranquillity of the site. There are two car parks, one on the lakeside, making the lake accessible to all and another further downhill on the road, offering a pleasant countryside walk. The lake is reserved for fly-fishing, and a no-kill policy is practised, that is to say, the fish must be returned live into the water. It is populated by chub and trout.

This species is a bioindicator of its environment, that is to say, it signals the good ecological health of its living environment. It is greenish brown on its back and underside and, as its name suggests, its claws are white. It can grow up to 12 cm in length and can live between 8 and 10 years. Its outer shell has several small characteristic lateral spines. Its mouth is edged with a pair of lateral "teeth". It feeds on plants, small invertebrates, amphibians and dead fish. It can lay 40 to 200 eggs. The young hatch between May and July.

The goldfinch is a small passerine bird. It has a brown back, black wings with a conspicuous yellow wing bar, a red face and a black and white head. It is found in forests but also in rural farmland and gardens. They form into groups which can often be seen on bird feeders. Essentially it is a granivore, or seed eater, and is particularly fond of the fruits of the globe thistle, (chardon in French hence the bird's French name “chardonneret”). Its beak is designed to winkle out the seeds from behind the spikes. The young are fed on insects, however.

The wood nuthatch is a small resident bird the size of a tit. Its speciality is working its way down tree trunks upside down. It nests in cavities in trees, most of which are excavated by woodpeckers (green woodpecker, spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker). When the entrance to the hole is too big, it reduces the diameter to a suitable size using mud which forms a wall. The aim is to protect its nestling from predators. This special characteristic has earned it the French nickname torche-pot (a reference to edging the rim of a vessel).

The Golden Eagle is a large bird of prey with a wingspan of up to 2.30 metres. It is a predator par excellence, armed with fearsome weapons: rapid flight adaptable to the most acrobatic situations and powerful, sharp talons. Its sharp eyesight, eight times sharper than a human's, lets it detect its prey: from marmots and young chamois to ptarmigan and hare. The Golden Eagle is also a keen scavenger, especially in winter when food is scarce.

The astragalus alopercurus (from alopex: fox and oura; tail) is a spectacular plant due to its size. It has long leaves with many leaflets. It blossoms when the weather gets warmer and shows off a beautiful cluster of flowers at the top of a tall hairy stem. Several yellow corolla grow out through thick protective hair to take in the sunshine and the warm summer winds.

If all pasque flowers are identifiable by their thick but soft hairiness, unlike anemones, when they reach maturity they also have a characteristic head of scruffy hair, made up of numerous fluffy white seed heads that will get blown away by the wind. In this family, the pasque flower is the most glamorous and most beautiful. It has the advantage of flowering in spring and displays a remarkable purple-black corrola among the grass that has been faded by the winter.

A high flying, mountain top acrobat, the yellow-billed chough is also very talented at gathering leftovers from the walkers' picnics. It usually moves in groups and brightens up its passage with a flute-like sound that is easy to recognise. This black bird has a yellow beak and red feet, and is a much a companion to mountaineers as it is to daydreamers.   

This shy lizard is familiar with dry, scrubby environments. It is hard to track down and flees noisily at the slightest danger. It can run very fast, standing up on its legs with its tail raised. Its burrow serves as a refuge and hibernation site, as it is particularly sensitive to the cold. It devours whatever it can find: insects, fruit, molluscs, eggs; small mammals can even be on the menu. It has blue eye-spots on its flanks.

The imposing Lauzes stones used to cover the roof underline the effort made to integrate with the landscape. After 1 hour and forty-five minutes walking, you will come across the charming mountain refuge that is at an altitude of 2000 m. It is guarded in spring and is the starting point for ski touring routes such as the Jocelme or the Brèche en V. In the summer, backing onto the Sirac, it is at the limit between hiking and mountaineering: a first-rate location. You might be lucky enough to spot chamois that loiter on the neighbouring slopes at the end of the day, as the sun takes its time to leave.

Perched on a rock, Les Bans mountain refuge offers a clear view of the Onde valley on one side and the cirque of high summits that surround the valley to the other side. It was made of dressed stones roughly fifty years ago and can sleep 22 people.
