Le Rochegude: Discover Albi and Tarn

7 km trail through the heart of the city on the GR36. Walking along the river banks, at the foot of the cathedral and Berbie Palace, demonstrates perfectly the position of the city in relation to the river. The Riverbank Path: Departs from the Cathedral car park and leads to the mouth of the Caussels brook, passable in any season. At the foot of the Cathedral and the Berbie Palace, it allows you to understand the city’s location in relation to the river. Every summer, near the scow pontoon, an ephemeral garden gives a distinctive tone to the Echappée Verte. The Wild Path: Between the Pont-Neuf and the Avenue du Loirat, the wild path is only accessible on foot for more experienced walkers (steps, fording, rocky areas) and is only feasible during the summer season. The wearing of closed shoes is recommended. The Mouline Path: from the Avenue de Loirat to the Planques car park, the Mouline path runs along the crest of the Caussels slope, along a vast plain. This section is accessible to bikes and is an easy walk. It is particularly suitable for families.

This trail takes you through a landscape typical of the Tarn valley: fields, vineyards and woods. There are plenty of views of the surrounding villages and, on clear days, even of the Pyrenees. There are regions where the pigeon is king. This bird (Lo colomb, in Occitan) was prized for its meat, but also for its droppings, which were used as a powerful fertiliser in the Gaillacois vineyards and fields. Many ‘colombièrs’ (dovecotes) have also left their mark on the Tarn landscape. You will see several around the village. There is a shorter alternative route from point 3 that joins the itinerary between points 5 and 6. The return journey takes you past the 19th-century Château de Labastidié.

The commune of Mouzieys-Teulet, united by an order of August 8, 1833, was born of the merger of MOSIEIS, whose parish Jean-Baptiste de Mosieis depended on the viscounty of Ambialet and Notre Dame de Theoullet (a place where tiles were made). In Teulet, only the chapel (11th century) remains from the fortified village: Motte de Taillefer, around which it was built. The motte castrale corresponds to the need to build a place of power in a natural relief that is not very favourable to defensive sites such as plains and valley bottoms: it is used to control communication routes. The path starts from the Taillefer chapel and winds its way between plains, hills and valleys, through woods, fields and pastures. It follows part of the Lézert, a small river which it crosses at the Cantarane bridge built in 1877. It passes through the hamlets of La Picounié, Puech del Cau, la Négrarié and Taillefer.

During your walk, you will have to walk along and cross the three streams, as indicated by its name: the Infernats, the small stream and the Lézert. Even if these three streams are not rivers, it is recommended to be careful when crossing them in wet weather. The Lézert is a tributary of the Dadou which has its source in the commune of Teillet. In Bellegarde, the climate is slightly milder and therefore allows the cultivation of vines which are part of the "Cunac" appellation zone of the Gaillac vineyards. On the way, you will see a few crosses: at Servy, Lévior and Truel and you will cross the Cantarane bridge, built in 1877. This bridge is also used by the Lou Cami de Theoullet trail, which starts at Teulet, in the commune of Mouzieys-Teulet.

On the stony plateau, the old monks' path crosses a subtle landscape. Crops, groves, vines, paths and traditional buildings make up the harmonious and luminous assembly of a small-scale landscape. A monastic path: Clearing a formerly forested Tarn revealed not only rich land but also almost barren places called "èrm" (wasteland). Like Herm, near Mouysset. Who cleared the land? The monks, for the most part. The monastery of Hauterive (near Castres) was one of the first in Gaul to apply the rule of Saint Benoit. Although this rule recommended that monks should not "spread out into the open", they quickly deviated from it to gain land in the forest and cultivate it. The monks of the Abbey of Bonnecombe, in Rouergue, cultivated around their barn in Bernac (south of Castanet) and used, for six centuries, the famous "Chemin des Moines" to transport aniseed, cereals, coriander, pastel and saffron.

Following the left bank of the Tarn for 3 km, the Chemin de la Beaute (from the word "Veaute" or "voute") follows the meander around a wooded ridge overlooking the river by 150 to 200 metres. Starting from the small village which has preserved its schistose stone houses, in the hollow of the valley, preserved by the road access formed by two tunnels (constructions planned for the passage of a railway line), the path follows two parts of the GR®36 with passages overhanging the Vallée du Tarn Valley. 8 km of discovery, pleasant for the coolness in summer and allowing beautiful plunges on the landscapes of valley and plateaus of Ségala.

During the 9.5 kilometres of this loop, starting from the village of Cestayrols (near Gaillac), a great diversity of landscapes made up of vineyards, valleys and sunflower fields will be offered to your eyes. During your journey, you will also discover the very picturesque and charming rural heritage, with its pigeon lofts and its wash houses, witnesses of the activities of our ancestors.

The landscapes of the Villefranchois are composed of wide valleys and beautiful plateaus. The climate is rather temperate, Mediterranean under the influence of the Autan wind, Atlantic under the dominant west winds. The path known as "Calle" will take you in turn along the banks of the Assou, to Calle, then onto the plateau, to "la Sigaudié" where a superb panoramic view of Villefranche and its surrounding countryside awaits you. You will go back down to the stream, to the Moulin de Bonnal. It already existed in 1789 and its huge millstones Its huge millstones, powered by the force of water, allowed the farmers of the area to grind their various grains and to obtain flour. In Occitan the word "cala" means a sheltered place. Perhaps this is the origin of the name of the place.

The Sentier des Quatre Châteaux (Four Castles Trail) takes you through the village of Sénouillac and the surrounding area, passing close to a number of private châteaux. Along the way, you'll also discover the vine-covered hillsides that have made this region so rich and famous. The name of the route refers to four châteaux: de la Bonnette, de Linardié, de Saint-Martial and the most famous: Château de Mauriac. The latter is the only one open to the public. The painter Bistes bought it in the 1960s and completely restored this 15th-century building, which is thought to have been built by the Templar Guiriaudus de Mauricius. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum is located in one of the most beautiful corners of Albi: the Berbie Palace. The Palace is one of the Episcopal City’s major sites with World Heritage status. The museum is recognised internationally for the works of this artist from Albi. TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, A UNIQUE COLLECTION IN THE WORLD The world’s most important public collection of the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including 31 posters by the lithograph painter, is to be found in Albi. There are also no fewer than 219 paintings, 563 drawings and 183 lithographs displayed in the museum. Early works, major portraits, paintings of brothels, prints from the world of entertainment, advertisements and later works are presented there, giving this museum an exceptional collection. Each stage of the production is represented, highlighting his gift for observation, his talent as a draughtsman and his quality for capturing significant detail. A trip on the River Tarn aboard a traditional flat-bottomed boat. This garden, classified as a Remarkable Garden, was created at the end of the 18th century. Designed on 2 levels, it was originally organized around a classic French park. In a second step, an English garden is laid out below. The Rochegude park is the freshness and natural asset of the Cordeliers cultural district, a new urban complex redesigned by the architect Dominique Perrault. This 4-hectare park bearing the name of Admiral Pascal de Rochegude will appeal to the whole family. The Le Lait art center has been promoting contemporary art in Albi and the Tarn for more than 40 years: exhibitions, artistic workshops, conferences, editions, symposia, artist residencies. The Old Alby house is the soul of the Episcopal City, one of the major symbols of Albi’s historic centre. The ‘Albi Heritage’ Association keeps the history of this iconic site alive. A MEDIEVAL HOUSE This brick and timber framed house has retained the characteristics of an old medieval house in the historic centre: half-timbered and corbelled to gain more surface area plus an open-air attic called ‘the soleilhou’ (pronounced "the solayoo"...). The house is situated in the heart of intertwining narrow streets, with the backdrop of the omnipresent cathedral. The ground floor is reminiscent of old stalls and a staircase leads to the upper floors, where there is a permanent exhibition on the youth of the Albi painter, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Berbie Palace houses the collections of this world-famous painter. The second floor is a video room dedicated to temporary exhibitions. ALBI HERITAGE HISTORY INFORMATION POINT Throughout the year, various events take place to the delight of visitors from around the world. Conferences, guided tours, exhibitions… The ‘Albi Heritage’ Association has a history Information Point open to the public. The site has retained is charm despite major renovation works in 1971. The Albi painter Raphaël CORDOBA dedicated 25 years of his life to pay tribute to the greatest painters in history from the 14th to the 20th centuries. 65 paintings are exhibited in the round tower of the Hotel de Saunal, a former Renaissance merchant’s mansion located close to the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral and the cloister of the Saint Salvi Collegiate Church. A MUSEUM FOR ALL : A HUMANIST APPROACH “A Museum for All” : that was Raphaël Cordoba's aim, who wanted to share his passion and respect for the greatest artists with as many people as possible. He is driven by the desire to interest visitors in art. His personal experience led him to capture the attention of children and teenagers and to reveal their artistic talent. The pleasure of the eye leads to the pleasure of the heart.

Integrated into the Episcopal City listed as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO), these two buildings harmoniously combine different architectural styles. The cloister garden is a real haven of peace in the heart of the old town. Free. This Cloister, built in 1270, is a small haven of peace offering an invitation to tranquillity and observation... the doors we can see under the arcades led directly to the canons’ cells, which are now apartments. The remaining cloister wing and the Romanesque arches are linked to the Gothic capitals which are carved withcharacters, animals or vegetation. In the centre of the cloister, a simple garden is arranged where aromatic and medicinal herbs are cultivated. It is one of the five vegetable gardens created by the City of Albi where vegetables, condiments and herbs are made available to passers-by: a pooled plant and edible heritage.

The collegiate Church of Saint Salvi, named after the 1st bishop of the city of Albi in the 6th century, has stood proudly at the corner of Sainte-Cécile square since the 11th century. This monument is one of the largest Romanesque churches in Albi. A visit to this monument completes a historic tour of Vieil Alby. Feel your curiosity increasing as you climb the stairs, the cloister is there, nestled in the heart of the old city. THE COLLEGIATE During the 11th century, the foundations of a white stone church were added to the presumed burial site of Saint Salvi. Note how the mixture of stone and brick coincides with the change of materials in the 13th century. Looking at the building, it is possible to see the various architectural phases and the switch from Roman to Gothic. Inside the church, 6 large paintings, donated by the Consuls of Albi in 1725, relate the life of Saint Salvi and the history of the city. At the far end of the church, under the Moucherel Organ, a set of human-sized sculptures “Christ with links” are full of surprising details and colours.

AIR LE PARC is located in a beautiful former 19th-century notary's residence, the base of which dates back to 1596, adjoining a park surrounded by old stone walls, in PAMPELONNE (Tarn), a 13th-century bastide town. The residence has been open since 2006. Artists' residency, project and research centre for professional artists working in all disciplines (design, painting, visual arts, music, writing, theatre, dance, film, multimedia, etc.). It is also open for sessions, seminars, concerts and training courses. The rooms and studios are spacious. Large communal areas are available for projects. Groups of hikers or weddings can also be accommodated if required.
