Cycling loop: Plateau des Bornes Sud

Cycling loop: Plateau des Bornes Sud

Start by following the Pont de la Caille Circuit, and then continue through Cruseilles. Departure point / TER: Annecy Length: 90 km Difficulty: red Total ascent: 1200 m Direction: clockwise Landmarks and connections : Allonzier-la-Caille (separation from Circuit du pont de la Caille n°7); Cruseilles (separation from Circuit du Salève n°20); les Petits Pierres D27 (junction with Plateau des Bornes nord n°24); Etaux (separation from Plateau des Bornes nord); La Roche-sur-Foron (junction with Tour des Glières n°45) TER station: La Roche-sur-Foron You start out on the same route as Circuit du pont de la Caille n°7 via Meythet and Metz-Tessy. First stop: the impressive Pont de la Caille bridge, which you must cross with your bike in hand. Then climb to Cruseilles (4 km along the main road). At the Dronières lake, take the lovely D27 with its shady bends. The Mont-Bené forest detour takes you to Chapelle-Rambaud, the summit of the Bornes plateau. On the descent to La Roche-sur-Foron, be cautious as you cross the RN203 and vigilant as you wind your way through the town, before arriving on the beautiful road to Thorens (D2). This final, hilly stretch of countryside runs beneath the cliffs of the Plateau des Glières and the Parmelan. In July and August, the Château de Thorens is open to individual visitors. It was here that François de Sales lived, having been born a little further down the road, in another château that no longer exists. Above all, it was here that the union of the County of Nice and the Duchy of Savoy with France was signed. Minister Cavour was a regular visitor to Château de Thorens, where he worked on Italian unity. These facts were brought back into the news on the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the reunion treaty of March 24, 1860.

Tour du Semnoz - Cycling rout

Tour du Semnoz - Cycling rout

This moderately difficult climb begins with a shaded woodland ascent to reach the Col de Leschaux (897m), followed by a descent into the Vallée du Chéran, before finishing along the western side of the Semnoz. A medium-difficulty route, it begins with a shady forest climb to the Col de Leschaux (897 m), followed by a plunge down to the Chéran valley. The route ends on the western flank of the Semnoz. Points of interest This is a great tour that allows you to take a look at the picturesque landscapes and sites in the heart of the Parc des Bauges. Discover the Diable and Abîme bridges, the Prérouge cave and the Chéran gorges. Cycling tip For the panoramic option, calculate the time to climb to the Col de Leschaux before the warm season. Direction of travel: clockwise Landmarks and connections: Sévrier (turn off with the Circuit de Leschaux n°8); Col de Leschaux; Gruffy (turn off with the Circuit de l'Albanais n°11 and Annecy-Aix les Bains n°51). Description: Apart from the road that runs along the Vallée du Chéran, (the only way out of the mountains), Coeur des Bauges is defended on all sides by high ridges, of which Leschaux is the lowest. 12km long with 480m of elevation change (with an average incline of 4%) and an even profile, it is the most popular route for cycling in the Haute Savoie and is perfect for beginners. To reach the foot of the mountain (RD912), leave the Voie Verte at the Port de Sévrier and follow the departmental road n°1508 for 1.5km towards Annecy, which you will reach after making a delicate left turn. Once you cross the ridge and reach the Vallée du Chéran (RD911), look out for a right turn onto the Route d'Allèves, which will take you to Annecy. But beforehand, we recommend that you make the 2km round trip to see the impressive Abîme bridge, it's worth it!

Cycling circuit: Tour du Mont Veyrier
165 m

Cycling circuit: Tour du Mont Veyrier

A steep climb at the beginning. Be careful not to miss the right turn during the descent from the Col de Bluffy… …or the superb view of the Château de Menthon! Direction: clockwise Landmarks and connections: Plaine d'Alex cycle path (junction for Tour de la Tournette no. 3, Tour des Glières no. 45 and Croix Fry circuit no. 46). Description: Shorter but considerably more eventful than the Tour du lac d'Annecy, this circuit can be a first step on your way to the red routes. It includes a small pass: the Col de Bluffy. If you're in good form, you can add another to your list of achievements, with a round trip to the tough Col des Contrebandiers (1054 m) at the end of the climb from Annecy-le-Vieux! But let's get back to the start of this climb: you need to follow the signs from the Petit-Port roundabout, as the uphill crossing of Annecy-le-Vieux requires a little attention. The subsequent descent of the Aravis road, on the other hand, is very smooth. Once you're on the flat, take a look at the Pont St-Clair and the Roman road on the other side of the Fier, before turning right just before the Plaine d'Alex cycle path, to set off on the gentle ascent of the Col de Bluffy (only 100 m ascent). But be careful! After just 3 km downhill, look out for the Route de la Corniche on your right. It will save you from the always tricky stretch of the RD909 between Veyrier and Chavoire. Finally, at the end of the return journey, look back at Mont Veyrier and note that you could still reach its summit by a cable car inaugurated in 1934, which departed from Veyrier-du-Lac, and which lifted over 40,000 people a year to the summit in the 1960s. It ceased operating in 1984 and was demolished in 2001.

Cycling loop: Tour de la Tournette

One of the area's great classics, with a beautiful descent between Serraval and St-Ferréol, and an easy return leg along the Annecy Cycleway. Direction: clockwise Landmarks and connections: Annecy-le-Vieux (common route with Tour du mont Veyrier n°2) ; Thônes (separation with Tour des Glières n°45 then Croix Fry circuit n°46) ; Faverges (junction with the greenway, known as the Promenade cyclable ) Description: Up to the Plaine d'Alex, the route is shared with Tour du Mont Veyrier no. 2. When the two routes separate, take the dedicated cycle path to the left of the RD16 to avoid 4 km of departmental road. A little further on, you'll pass the Musée de la Résistance de Morette and its cemetery (Nécropole Nationale des combats en 1944 du plateau des Glières). Once you're in Thônes, turn left before the church, then right at the roundabout onto the RD12, which, after an easy climb up the Col du Marais and a beautiful winding descent from Serraval to St-Ferréol, takes you to the plain and the Lake Annecy cycle path. A word about Thônes, which certainly deserves a break. You'll certainly be surprised by the architectural similarities of its facades and vaulted passageways to Annecy's old town. You should also know that it was in Thônes that Jean-Jacques Rousseau experienced the famous episode of the "cherry idyll" that he recounts in his Confessions: "After dinner [...] we went to finish our dessert with cherries. I'd climb the tree, and throw them bunches, and they'd give me back pits through the branches. On one occasion, Melle Gallay, putting her apron forward and her head back, presented herself so well, and my aim was so accurate, that I knocked a bunch into her bosom, and laughed. I was thinking to myself: aren't my lips cherries! How willingly I'd throw them at them... ".

Cycling itinerary: Aravis / Arly crossing

Also called the "Prince of Wales" in honour of one of the most prestigious visitors to have cycled the route. The view of Mont-Blanc from the Col des Aravis is not to be missed. Departure point / TER: Annecy Length: 108 km Difficulty: black Total ascent: 1300 m Direction: clockwise Landmarks and connections: Thônes (separation from Tour des Glières no. 45); La Clusaz (separation from Circuit de la Croix-Fry no. 46); Ugine (junction with voie verte) The first third of this long loop is shared with Tour de la Tournette n°3 and Tour des Glières n°45. The climb up to the Aravis Pass from St-Jean-de-Sixt is not particularly challenging. Its gradients are always below 7%, except for a very short section at 8.5%. On the other hand, the final part of the climb is very beautiful, amidst vast green alpine meadows and at the foot of high cliffs. But before you start, take a detour to the pretty center of La Clusaz, dominated by one of the most beautiful bulbous bell towers in the Alps. You won't be tempted to linger at the top of the Col des Aravis (1498 m), which is often crowded with a multitude of stalls. But don't miss the view of Mont Blanc before you cross into Savoie! After the spectacular plunge through the twists and turns of La Giettaz, you'll reach the Val d'Arly national road. It's best to get away from it as soon as possible. That's why you'll leave it at the Flon bridge and take the balcony road to Héry-sur-Ugine, which is much quieter (except when the main road is closed, which is quite often). From Ugine, don't miss the new 37-km greenway, which continues all the way to Annecy.

Palais de l'Île
560 m

Palais de l'Île

Listed as a historic monument in 1900, the Palais de l'Ile, often described as a "house in the shape of a ship" has been a prison, a courthouse and an administrative centre. It is an original structure, the oldest parts of which date from the 12th century. Firstly a simple quadrangular building described as a stronghold, which occasionally housed the prison and the minting workshop of the Counts of Geneva, today, the building referred to as the Palais de l'Ile is an original medieval monument: It is built on a natural rocky island. The stronghold was referred to for the first time in 1325 as a prison when the lord of Annecy paid Jean de Monthoux, the lord of Isle, for food for two prisoners. In 1355, Count Amadeus III of Geneva was awarded "the right to mint gold and silver on his land" by the Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Empire. A construction campaign led to the creation of a minting workshop which ceased activity at the end of the 14th century. The Geneva family died out. Annecy and the Geneva region were attached to the Duchy of Savoie and Duke Amadeus VIII gave the residence to the Monthoux family. At the end of the 16th century, the house which sheltered the courthouse, became known as the Palais de Justice de l'Ile. After the 18th century, the building was used for administrative functions, but also continued to be used as a prison up until 1864 when a new prison was built. This has since been destroyed. The Palais de l'Ile became a home for the elderly between 1865 and 1880. At the time, Annecy Municipal Council made plans to demolish the Palais de l'Ile in order to make room for baths, but the project was abandoned. The building was used temporarily as a school for stone carvers and carpenters, a gymnasium and accommodation. The novelist Andre Theuriet and Charles Suisse, the Inspector for Historic Monuments, spoke out against the planned demolition. On 16 February 1900, the Palais de l'Ile was listed as a historic monument and a first phase of renovation work was launched. The final phase of restoration dates from 1983-1985.

La Rotonde des Trésoms

Beautiful gastronomy, balance of flavours, heritage and know-how in this panoramic restaurant La Rotonde overlooking the lake. Eric Prowalski offers a fine cuisine with authentic and local flavours without forgetting his south-western roots. Eric Prowalski takes you on a journey of taste, respecting the seasons and quality produce. Take a gustatory stroll from Arcachon to Annecy in his fine cuisine. Share and enjoy the dishes of our region in our gastronomic restaurant, La Rotonde, with its warm, modern décor overlooking the lake and offering a wide-angle view of the lake and mountains. From the "Around a dish" menu served in an hour at lunchtime and during the week to the tasting menu, we have a great menu to suit all tastes. Welcome to a world of sharing, delicate flavours and emotions. A subtle, gourmet cuisine is born. The dishes are colourful, feminine and elegant. Through his creations, Éric interprets the two regions that have shaped his life. A dialogue between the Arcachon Basin and Lake Annecy. "I'm lucky enough to have two cultures. The first is my family history in the South-West and the second is my adopted region (Annecy in Haute-Savoie), which has welcomed me with open arms. Every day, I create a real culinary identity from these dual roots". The theme of water is the link between these 2 natural territories. Each of his creations brings together these 2 worlds, 2 ecosystems, which complement, harmonise or oppose each other. Lake Annecy, calm and radiant, leads him to interpret freshwater fish and the vegetables of our market gardeners. A subtle repertoire!
