Crossing the Pyrenean foothills on the Véloroute 81 requires first of all following the Atlantic coast to the mouth of the Adour River; a godsend since the landscapes offered by this sample of the Basque coastline, from the cliffs of the Biarritz lighthouse to the golden sands of Anglet, are among the most beautiful to begin a bicycle trip. The mouth of the Adour River is a sudden change of course: let's head east along the river to the historic shopping town of Bayonne, where the architectural treasures are a great incentive to take a curious break. Cycling facilities are a great help in getting through the city and, again with the Adour River, the route takes in the surrounding countryside.

At the end, a cycle track awaits you and takes you through the peaceful district of Chiberta, its lake, its Basque or architect's houses in the shade of the pines and its two golf courses, ideally situated between ocean and forest. On the way back, you will once again pass along the Pignada forest, a wooded area that offers a shaded and cool area, ideal for walks and the practice of numerous sporting activities.

The first part of the coastal path offers a great diversity of atmospheres, alternating beaches, creeks, paths and small roads. The Sainte-Eugénie church is placed under the vocation of Saint Eugénie, patron saint of Napoleon III's wife, the empress Eugénie de Montijo. It is a neo-Gothic church made of grey stones which dominates the old port. Its construction lasted from 1898 to 1903. Previously, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié stood on this site. The construction of the bell tower began in 1927 and the bells were installed in 1931. The building has exceptional stained glass windows by Luc-Olivier Merson. The model of a ship in ex-voto is a three-masted ship armed with cannons, with a blue, black and white hull: La Mathilde. Closed for renovation.

Imposing rock that Napoleon III decided to use as an anchor point for the dyke of the Port du Refuge that he wanted to create. So this rock was connected to the land by a wooden bridge (replaced by a metallic footbridge attributed to Gustave Eiffel) and pierced by a tunnel like the Atalaye, to allow the bringing of the blocks of stone intended for the construction of the dike. This rock owes its current name to the statue of the virgin erected on its summit in 1865.

Perched on the rock of the Halde, a traditional Biarritz landmark, the Villa Belza juts out over the ocean like the bow of a ship. It is the work, around 1880, of the architect Alphonse BERTRAND. It was originally a rectangular building to which was added 15 years later a neo-medieval keep. Belza, victim of a fire, remained abandoned for a long time and was recently renovated by the promoter Gallabert to be sold in apartments.

On Place Sobradiel (except Saturdays, rue des Halles sud until All Saints' Day), the textile and decoration market welcomes you every day from 8.30am to 2pm. In season (July and August), the Halles are also open at the end of the day from 6pm to 9pm.
