Discover the wonders of Chamonix with Les Chalets de Philippe

A beautiful hike up the mountain of La Pendant. Between alpine meadows and forests, you'll discover some of the ancient viewpoints of the Mer de Glace, and see how the glacier has retreated over the ages. From the village of Le Lavancher, just outside Chamonix, this hike takes you to a more confidential Mer de Glace observation point than the famous Montenvers: Le Chapeau. The chalet, which backs onto the mountain, was once next to the glacier and today bears witness to its gradual retreat. Enjoy traditional dishes at the Chalet Restaurant du Chapeau while admiring this impressive landscape. You'll have a fine view of the Arveyron torrent (the outlet of the Mer de Glace), which is joined by the Chapeau torrent at the waterfall of the same name. The loop continues towards Tête de Prapators, accessible by a small ladder. From the top of the 1,844-metre-high peak, take time to contemplate the view over the tongue of the Mer de Glace. You'll then reach the Chalets de la Pendant in the heart of a beautiful alpine landscape, before starting your descent on the Grand Balcon Nord trail.

Viewpoint over the glacial lakes, the Gorges de l'Arveyron, the Aiguilles and the Chamonix valley. Summer: Opposite Les Tines SNCF station, enter the wood via Chemin de la Pierre n°2: listed site. A little above the reservoir, turn right on the Sources de l'Arveyron path, then, at the next intersection, turn left along the Chapeau itinerary. You'll find the "buvette du Chapeau" by the roadside. Continue past the buvette and you'll come to a lovely view of the Aiguilles de Chamonix. Other routes are possible from Les Bois or Le Lavancher. This path goes through the Chamonix valley, taking you to Servoz from Argentière. All along, there are wonderful views over the Valley and the Mont Blanc Massif. From the Corruaz bridge, follow the Chemin du Paradis for 500 m on the right bank of the Arve. In front of the next bridge, Pont de la Forge, the Petit Balcon goes up to the right in the undergrowth. Cross under the Rochers du Raffort, then under the Flégère cable car in the large corridor of Les Lanchers (Flégère trail and track). Enter again the forest interrupted by the corridors of La Floria and Le Châble. Cut the paths going to the Floria and the Charlanon. Cross the couloir des Nants and the penstock of the electric plant. The path goes on, always at the same altitude and at a pleasant pace, sometimes in the forest, sometimes in clearings. It crosses the forest track shortly after the couloir des Plans, then joins the Planpraz trail: follow it for 150 m downhill and abandon it to go right horizontally. Cross under the Planpraz gondola and cut the path of the Petits Lacets de Planpraz to arrive in the big Couloir du Brévent. In the forest, at the fork in the road, leave the path on the right going up to Bel-Lachat. Continue flat above the Lakes and the Rochers des Gaillands by the Merlet path called "Sentier Henri VALLOT" (1853-1922), cartographer of Mont-Blanc (plaque on rock). Cross the Gaillands couloir, then a sparse wood. Go down to avoid a landslide, leave the path leading down to the Gaillands on the left and cross to reach the Ravin des Vouilouds (torrent). At this point, a path goes down to the left to join the Bossons. Note. On the right the Petit Balcon Sud goes up to Merlet. This thematic trail allows you to discover the sector of the "Tailleurs de Pierre". Most of the brackets, window frames, stair treads, paving stones that you can see while walking in the streets of Chamonix come from this quarry. From the village of Les Bois, pass in front of the Biathlon shooting range, cross the Arveyron and head towards the Norway sector. Follow the markings of the thematic trail. This is the last walks around Bois du Bouchet and the PIerre à Orthaz. A lovely wild setting beside the river Arveyron. Leave the village by the chemin de la Source. You will see on the left a rock bearung the inscription "1825" (listed site) which is a reminder of the year when Mer de Glace advanced to its furthest point (site of the grotte d'Arveyron). Follow the right bank of the river through the forets of larch and spruce. At the EDF tramway station, avoid the path on your left which leads to le Chapeau bby Cote du Piget and keep going to your right as far as the rocky viewpoint. Here you can admire the Rocher des Mottets, the Gorges and the Sources de l'Arveyron, which flows out of the snout of the Mer de Glace. Suggestions: It is possible to walk back to Chamonix via Pierre à Orthaz and the villages of Coverays, la Frasse and Les Mouilles (chemin des Cristalliers) or via Bois de la Bagna and Bois du Bouchet.

In the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, the Lac Blanc circuit from the top of the Flégère cable car has a view of Mont Blanc. Please note: in order to preserve mountain lakes, swimming is now prohibited at Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys. From Chamonix Mont-Blanc, follow signs for Martigny on the road to Les Praz. Start at Les Praz de Chamonix. Park in the La Flégère gondola parking lot. It's best to take the Flégère gondola, which saves us 800m of uninteresting ascent. From the top of the gondola station, descend into the Combe de la Chavanne. Near the old stables, on the left, follow the trail that winds up the slope and passes the Chalets et Lac de la Flégère (2,027m). Take the path below the Tête du Aubuy: it stretches out, skirts a ridge (small lake) and joins the path coming from Argentière. Lac Blanc is reached via the side of a flattening combe. Itinerary on the south side. Magnificent panorama on the Mont Blanc Massif with changing perspective Go down below the train station: at the level of the refuge de la Flégère on the right, the the path goes horizontally to a chimney (ramps, steps) that you go down. Cross above the couloir des Lanchers: after a scree, you reach the top of the forest which opens onto the Alpage de la Charlanon (Charlanon/Flégère cable car: winter link). Leave on the left the path going to Chamonix. Reach the base of the Charlanon ridge by the mountain pasture, then a short undergrowth: you end up above the combe de la Parsa (chairlifts) which goes up to the Planpraz plateau from where you can reach the cable car stations below. Suggestion: in the opposite direction, this balcony is a classic using either the using either the cable car or the gondola. Itinerary located on the famous GR Tour du Mont-Blanc and the GR5. A lovely walk that takes you through the woods below La Flegere. Snack bar. Play area for children. Pony rides (only in July and August). Beautiful views over the Aiguilles and Mont-Blanc. From the village, near the chapel, take Les Tines road - N 506 - and then turn left along the road to the golf course (18 holes). Once over the bridge, turn right along the Promenade du Paradis des Praz, which takes you into the woods where you can wander at leisure, contemplate the streams or rest on the benches. The traverse of the northern “balcony” route above Chamonix is one of Haute Savoie’s greatest walks. The outing starts by taking the Aiguille du Midi cable car to the Plan de l’Aiguille and finishes by taking the Montenvers rack-and-pinion railway. There is no better way to immerse oneself in the magical atmosphere of the high mountains and marvel at the magnificent summits of the Mont Blanc Range. The walk starts in the shadow of the Aiguille du Midi, the Dôme du Goûter and Mont Blanc, to finish beside the Mer de Glace, at the foot of the Grandes Jorasses, the Drus and the Aiguille Verte. And, what is more, the entire route offers unbeatable views of the Aiguilles Rouges and Passy nature reserves, just two of the 9 nature reserves in Haute Savoie – the largest number of any French “département”. DEPARTURE : Plan Joran cable car. Enduro itinerary using the Grands Montets ski area trails to reach the Lognan plateau. The route follows the forest track to the chalets de la Pendant to reach Le Lavancher. Wearing a helmet and protective gear is highly recommended, mountain bikes suitable for downhill riding with appropriate braking systems. Facing south and looking onto Mont Blanc, the Flégère area is the departure for classic hikes to magnificent mountain lakes in summer and south-facing skiing with a view over the Mont Blanc mountain range ! From the village of Les Praz, the gondola takes you over the Golf de Chamonix to the Flégère site at 1877m. If you wish to continue your journey, the chairlift takes you to Index, at an altitude of 2595m.

Located in the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes, famous for its unique panorama opposite the Mont Blanc Massif. The lake is composed of two parts. The place offers an exceptional panorama on the Mont Blanc massif. Its postcard landscape has been attracting tourists from all over the world for decades.

The Aiguillette d'Argentière is located in the Aiguilles Rouges massif above Argentière (1893m). This Aiguillette is the playground of many climbers.

The natural site of the Mer de Glace comes from the glaciers of Leschaux and Géant. The Mer de Glace is the largest glacier in France: 7 km long, 40 km2 in area, 200 m thick, altitude 1913 m. Soak up the high mountain atmosphere of the place, contemplating the Drus (3754m), and the Grandes Jorasses (4208m), mythical summits that have seen so many mountaineers illustrate themselves in their faces. In 1741, the Englishmen Windham and Pocock, ignoring the local superstitions, visited the famous "glaciers" of the Chamonix valley, considered at the time as haunts of demons. Despite dire predictions, they came down alive and described for the first time what they called the Mer de Glace. 1880, the Grand Hôtel du Montenvers was inaugurated, the time when mules and sedan chairs brought the first tourists to the site, at an altitude of 1913m. In 1892, the project to build a railroad to reach Montenvers was launched. It aroused fierce opposition from Chamonix residents who feared the alteration of their valley and wanted to protect the jobs of the guides and muleteers. 1908, on August 9th, the line opened up to the place called "Caillet".

The church was built in 1726 in a baroque style with a very beautiful bell tower. Its altarpiece was classified in 1912. The inhabitants of Argentière built the church at their own expense in order to attend mass during winter time. Indeed, it was almost impossible to go to Chamonix during winter at the time.

Have fun at the foot of Mont Blanc! The Chamonix amusement park offers a wide range of activities for children aged 1 and over: kiddy rides, carousels, water games, mechanical shovels, crane trucks and play areas. From 3 years: mini karting, slides. From age 4: trampolines and butterfly. From age 7: komet, looping rides, splash boat nautic jet. It's the biggest multi-leisure center in the Mont Blanc region. An ideal place to have a good time, with family, friends or groups.

Lac Cornu is a mountain lake located between the summit of the Index chairlift and Planpraz. The neighbouring Lacs Noirs are just ten minutes away. Located about 10 minutes from the Black Lakes. The Lac Cornu is snowed in or iced over almost 9 months of the year! It is a quiet and peaceful place from which you will be able to see most of the time, a beautiful band of wild ibexes, hanging on the walls surrounding this mountain lake.

The Argentière glacier is a glacier of the Mont-Blanc massif. It flows towards the village of Argentière, hence its name. About 100 years ago, the glacier reached as far as the Argentière temple (1,250 meters); in recent years, the terminal tongue of the glacier, which still extends to about 1,250 meters, has separated from the rest of the glacier at about 1,900 meters.

Accentuated reliefs and spectacular layering of flora characterize this reserve. From moraines to glaciers, a multitude of plants have adapted to the extreme living conditions. A unique balcony to observe the Mt-Blanc and its glaciers. Created in 1974, the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve has a surface area of 3,300 ha and reaches a height of between 1,200 m and 2,965 m.

A chalet serving light refreshments located right by the gorges de l'Arveyron (canyon), offering a view of Les Drus and the Chamonix valley. The Buvette du Chapeau as we see it today is not the first of its kind... In 1855, a refuge was created to accommodate the many tourists and guides crossing the Mer de Glace from Montenvers. Over the course of almost a century, the Chapeau refuge became an almost unmissable excursion, as travelers flocked to the Mauvais Pas trail. Le Chapeau is like a reward, thanks to its well-served table and its breathtaking view over the Chamonix valley. Following a landslide in the winter of 1953, it was decided that the Chapeau refuge was too exposed to rockfalls and other hazards. In 1954, Gilberte and Luc Couttet took over the concession for the buvette du Chapeau for the next twenty years, with the aim of redeveloping it close to the old chalet, but protected from rockfalls. Luc and his sons Freddy and Michel set to work, building the buvette du Chapeau you know today, against the rock. The Buvette des Mottets is a cosy corner of paradise facing the majestic Drus, and above the end of the Mer de Glace. Rustic and typical chalet (250 years old), large kitchen and large space upstairs, remained in the spirit of the time, traditional and friendly. It has remained almost as it was two centuries ago. Le Vieux Grassonnet can accommodate about twenty people: individuals, small or large groups...
