This circuit first crosses a vineyard, then passes along a lake before going into the forest of Verdus on winding and stony paths. The village of Masquières, close to the department of Lot, occupies a large part of this forest. In the valleys of Lartel and Las Gonies, archaeological discoveries testify to the prehistoric occupation of the place. Nearby, dug into a hill, the cobbler's cave sheltered Neolithic burials. In the forest are the remains of a covered alley called the "Tomb of the Giants" (prehistoric megalith). This hike crosses the plains of Toulouse, Vidalot or Galaux. Don't think that the relief is absent. These "plains" are in fact plateaus surrounding the narrow valley of the Boudouyssou where the small village of Courbiac nestles.

The commune of Florimont Gaumier, rich in natural and architectural heritage in the Perigord style with Quercy influences, has undeniable assets to attract all the curious. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Céou, a small tributary river of the Dordogne, and it is this charming and capricious river that gave its name to the Chai de Moncalou cooperative cellar. The vines produced high quality wines, served at the King's Court! In 1870 it was the second largest vineyard in the Dordogne after Bergerac with no less than 2700 hectares. After the phylloxera and the great wars, the vineyard disappeared... The small village is organized around 2 bell towers: Florimont, perched at 272m, Causse country and Gaumier which sees the Céou flowing at its feet.

Départ : Rue du Majou à la « Porte du Majou » : La rue s’ouvre sous la porte « porta Major » de l’enceinte médiévale bâtie au XIIIe. Le blason au-dessus de la porte représente le rempart et le Château de Gourdon. C’est une des 4 portes de Gourdon qui s’ouvrait sur une barbacane. La « Grande rue » du Gourdon médiéval commence ici ; elle est bordée de façades des XIII, XIV, XV, XVIe et XVIIe siècles, anciennes échoppes et hôtels particuliers des grandes familles de marchands gourdonnais. « Chapelle du Majou » : Chapelle de style ogival dédiée à la Vierge. Bâtie contre le mur de la cité au XVIe. elle fut saccagée pendant les guerres de Religion et restaurée au XIXe. Comme le mentionne la plaque c’est un « Autel privilégié ». Des indulgences étaient accordées par le Pape aux fidèles qui y « prient pour la conversion des pêcheurs et le triomphe de la Sainte Église ». De belles boiseries du XVIIIe se trouvent à l’intérieur. Plus haut dans la Rue du Majou, une maison à colombages et à encorbellement, ainsi que l’Office de Tourisme. Après l’Office de Tourisme, sur la droite la Maison du Sénéchal : Anciennes échoppes gothiques au rez-de-chaussée. Au 1er étage : fenêtres à meneaux de la Renaissance. Un escalier à colimaçon à l’arrière permet l’accès aux étages supérieurs Dès le XVIe siècle c’était la Maison du représentant de la justice royale : le Sénéchal. À l’extérieur, les latrines sont visibles dans l’impasse. À l’intérieur des fresques du XVe et les plafonds à la française du XVIIe montrent la richesse passée de ses résidents. (ne se visite pas) En haut de la rue du Majou, la Place de l’Hôtel de Ville : L’Hôtel de ville : du XIIIe, il fut reconstruit au XVIIe, ancien siège du « consulat » mis en place dès 1244. Les barreaux d’une ancienne cellule témoignent que la justice locale y était dispensée. À l’intérieur : Escaliers à paliers de style classique. La porte est décorée du blason consulaire : ce sont les armes de la ville « d’azur à la croix d’argent cantonné de 4 fleurs de Lys d’or reversées ». Les couverts de la place, au cœur de la cité, étaient un lieu de marché. L’Église Saint Pierre (M.H.) : Sa construction a débuté il y a 700 ans et s’est achevée au XVIe siècle. Les tours du clocher se dressent à près de 35 m de hauteur. Cette église fortifiée (mâchicoulis sur la façade) d’aspect austère à l’extérieur est un édifice de style gothique languedocien très ouvragé à l’intérieur. L’abside du chœur est décorée d’un retable en bois doré en trompe l’œil, oeuvre des sculpteurs Gourdonnais les frères Tournier. Ces tableaux en relief représentent des scènes de la vie de Marie et de Jésus (bel exemple de la sculpture baroque du XVIIe). En longeant l’église par la droite, La Maison Cavaignac : Porte classée Monument Historique du XVIIe (la femme à la balance symbolise la justice). Comme le signale la plaque, c’est la maison natale du député Conventionnel Jean Baptiste Cavaignac qui siégea à la « Montagne ». Son père fut maire de Gourdon. La descendance n’est pas moins célèbre : le Général de Cavaignac s’illustra notamment dans l’Histoire Nationale au XIXe s. Possibilité d’accéder à la table d’orientation (Ancien Château) par les escaliers au fond du parking. Le château : Aujourd’hui un belvédère à 284 m d’altitude doté d’une table d’orientation. Rien ne reste du Donjon médiéval construit par les seigneurs locaux. Il fut démantelé par ordre du Roi Louis XIII pour punir Pons de Lauzieres deThemines tombé alors en disgrâce. Descendre la Rue Sourde pour voir les Ogives et les fenêtres à Meneaux. Passage par la rue Frézat, la rue la plus étroite de la ville. Arrivée dans la Rue du Cardinal Farinié, face au Presbytère, remonter et prendre à gauche la rue de la Mairie ou « Rue des Consuls » : pigeonnier et maison à bolet. Rue des consuls : Au XIIIe, la vie municipale s’organise grâce à la charte de Coutumes octroyée par les seigneurs de Gourdon et régit les droits : privé, pénal et public. Les consuls administrent la cité, assistés des représentants des seigneurs locaux. Ainsi s’amorce un processus d’émancipation qui favorise l’essor économique de la cité. Arrivée dans la cour du Sénéchal, traverser les Jardins du Sénéchal pour arriver Rue Zig-Zag : la rue des Taverniers. Belle Porte du XIIIe s. Retour Rue du Majou.

The parish of Sainte Marie Madeleine d'Aussac is known since the beginning of the 11th century. The presence of a site from the early Middle Ages, nearby, suggests an even older existence. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century, after the long Franco-English conflict, as shown by the angel bearing the coat of arms of the kings of France. The plan adopted is very characteristic of the reconstructions of this period: single naves, side chapels... Some remains of wall paintings from the late Middle Ages have been uncovered.

The church was built in the 14th century around a hamlet near the manor of La Bouffie. It appears in the middle of the woods in its superb cream-coloured robe, in the middle of this wolf landscape. The interior is of great clarity. The walls, domes, chapels, choir... are illustrated with frescoes discovered only in 1954. The scenes and characters illustrating subjects from the Bible, Old and New Testaments, are of great finesse in their expressiveness. This exceptional decoration was influenced by the paintings of northern France and the royal court in Paris. It can probably be linked to the construction of the neighbouring collegiate church (decoration carried out jointly by the same workshop at the collegiate church and at Saux).

Gandoulès, a small haven of peace The small church of Saint-Pierre de Gandoulès, a jewel of Romanesque art (12th century), a visible witness to the history of the Quercy Blanc, is home to a real heritage treasure with one of the rare bells dating from the 14th century and still working in Occitania. The two bells in the bell tower were restored in 2018. At the same time, a third bell was designed, cast at the Cornille-Havard foundry, then demoulded on site in Gandoulès and finally hoisted into its bell tower by force of arms. This new bell, "Marie", reflects what is lived in the heart of the Hamlet. It rings out joy, sharing and friendship.

Museum of Memory and Remembrance Formerly the chapel of the nuns of the Ursuline convent, this beautiful building now opens its doors to you as a veterans' house. A handful of volunteer veterans have taken up the torch and are reviving this memory. This house retraces the First and Second World Wars, as well as the colonial wars, in particular a large subject on the Algerian War, with numerous archives.

Today, the cloister houses the municipal school and the media library. This convent was built in the 17th century to provide young girls in the country with Christian education and instruction. During the French Revolution, the convent was partly sold and the remaining buildings were used by the municipal services. Today they house the public school and the media library. The main facade overlooking the square hides the cloister. On the top floor of the old convent is a gallery which allowed the Ursulines to raise silkworms. The mulberry trees present in the schoolyard bear witness to this activity since the leaves of the trees were used to feed the worms!

Built in the 14th century and classified as a historical monument, it is the last gate still visible, whereas the town had five. Montpezat-de-Quercy was once protected by ramparts and ditches. The ramparts were rebuilt in the 14th century to protect the city during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) between France and England. The ramparts were defended by several watchtowers (small guard posts) from which the surroundings could be monitored. The ditches have since been filled in but corresponded to the route of the boulevard passing right in front of the Tourist Office, and quite simply called “boulevard des ditches”! Five gates allowed entry into Montpezat. This is the last one still visible, the so-called Hospital. It was formerly closed by heavy wooden doors. Inside these doors a small door had been installed, always closed, which allowed the guards to communicate with passing travelers wishing to enter the city.

A medieval city worth visiting In Montpezat-de-Quercy, you will admire the collegiate church built in the 14th century in the Gothic style by the Cardinal des Prés. Inside you will find Flemish tapestries of high quality evoking the life of Saint Martin and his legend, an important treasure, paintings, English alabasters, statues, precious fabrics, and a 16th century baptismal font. In the heart of the village, the 14th century town gate, the 15th and 17th century Chanoines' house, the Renaissance houses and the squares of the Hôtel de Ville, lined with cutlery, Frédéric Cayrou, the Bicentenaire, the Chanoines' house and finally the 17th century Ursulines' cloister invite you to stroll around. In Montpezat-de-Quercy there are remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement. The town reached its peak in the Middle Ages. Its destiny was linked to that of the Montpezat family, which appeared at the end of the 11th century. In the 13th century, most of the noble houses adopted the Cathar cult. The second family of Montpezat owed its fame to Cardinal Pierre des Prés (1288-1361), a patron of the arts and statesman, adviser to the popes of Avignon, in particular to John XXII, who was himself a native of Cahors. Montpezat-de-Quercy has known the Wars of Religion, the great Revolution and all the upheavals of history, notably the wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 which cruelly affected it.
