Balade N°1 de la Cité Médiévale de Gourdon

Départ : Rue du Majou à la « Porte du Majou » : La rue s’ouvre sous la porte « porta Major » de l’enceinte médiévale bâtie au XIIIe. Le blason au-dessus de la porte représente le rempart et le Château de Gourdon. C’est une des 4 portes de Gourdon qui s’ouvrait sur une barbacane. La « Grande rue » du Gourdon médiéval commence ici ; elle est bordée de façades des XIII, XIV, XV, XVIe et XVIIe siècles, anciennes échoppes et hôtels particuliers des grandes familles de marchands gourdonnais. « Chapelle du Majou » : Chapelle de style ogival dédiée à la Vierge. Bâtie contre le mur de la cité au XVIe. elle fut saccagée pendant les guerres de Religion et restaurée au XIXe. Comme le mentionne la plaque c’est un « Autel privilégié ». Des indulgences étaient accordées par le Pape aux fidèles qui y « prient pour la conversion des pêcheurs et le triomphe de la Sainte Église ». De belles boiseries du XVIIIe se trouvent à l’intérieur. Plus haut dans la Rue du Majou, une maison à colombages et à encorbellement, ainsi que l’Office de Tourisme. Après l’Office de Tourisme, sur la droite la Maison du Sénéchal : Anciennes échoppes gothiques au rez-de-chaussée. Au 1er étage : fenêtres à meneaux de la Renaissance. Un escalier à colimaçon à l’arrière permet l’accès aux étages supérieurs Dès le XVIe siècle c’était la Maison du représentant de la justice royale : le Sénéchal. À l’extérieur, les latrines sont visibles dans l’impasse. À l’intérieur des fresques du XVe et les plafonds à la française du XVIIe montrent la richesse passée de ses résidents. (ne se visite pas) En haut de la rue du Majou, la Place de l’Hôtel de Ville : L’Hôtel de ville : du XIIIe, il fut reconstruit au XVIIe, ancien siège du « consulat » mis en place dès 1244. Les barreaux d’une ancienne cellule témoignent que la justice locale y était dispensée. À l’intérieur : Escaliers à paliers de style classique. La porte est décorée du blason consulaire : ce sont les armes de la ville « d’azur à la croix d’argent cantonné de 4 fleurs de Lys d’or reversées ». Les couverts de la place, au cœur de la cité, étaient un lieu de marché. L’Église Saint Pierre (M.H.) : Sa construction a débuté il y a 700 ans et s’est achevée au XVIe siècle. Les tours du clocher se dressent à près de 35 m de hauteur. Cette église fortifiée (mâchicoulis sur la façade) d’aspect austère à l’extérieur est un édifice de style gothique languedocien très ouvragé à l’intérieur. L’abside du chœur est décorée d’un retable en bois doré en trompe l’œil, oeuvre des sculpteurs Gourdonnais les frères Tournier. Ces tableaux en relief représentent des scènes de la vie de Marie et de Jésus (bel exemple de la sculpture baroque du XVIIe). En longeant l’église par la droite, La Maison Cavaignac : Porte classée Monument Historique du XVIIe (la femme à la balance symbolise la justice). Comme le signale la plaque, c’est la maison natale du député Conventionnel Jean Baptiste Cavaignac qui siégea à la « Montagne ». Son père fut maire de Gourdon. La descendance n’est pas moins célèbre : le Général de Cavaignac s’illustra notamment dans l’Histoire Nationale au XIXe s. Possibilité d’accéder à la table d’orientation (Ancien Château) par les escaliers au fond du parking. Le château : Aujourd’hui un belvédère à 284 m d’altitude doté d’une table d’orientation. Rien ne reste du Donjon médiéval construit par les seigneurs locaux. Il fut démantelé par ordre du Roi Louis XIII pour punir Pons de Lauzieres deThemines tombé alors en disgrâce. Descendre la Rue Sourde pour voir les Ogives et les fenêtres à Meneaux. Passage par la rue Frézat, la rue la plus étroite de la ville. Arrivée dans la Rue du Cardinal Farinié, face au Presbytère, remonter et prendre à gauche la rue de la Mairie ou « Rue des Consuls » : pigeonnier et maison à bolet. Rue des consuls : Au XIIIe, la vie municipale s’organise grâce à la charte de Coutumes octroyée par les seigneurs de Gourdon et régit les droits : privé, pénal et public. Les consuls administrent la cité, assistés des représentants des seigneurs locaux. Ainsi s’amorce un processus d’émancipation qui favorise l’essor économique de la cité. Arrivée dans la cour du Sénéchal, traverser les Jardins du Sénéchal pour arriver Rue Zig-Zag : la rue des Taverniers. Belle Porte du XIIIe s. Retour Rue du Majou.
