Hike to the ancient Castelviel Oppidum, on the heights of Aiguèze

A historical and botanical discovery trail. Discover the Chastelas (old medieval castle), its history, legends and natural resources.

In a setting with oak trees mainly predominating, the hiking trail leads up to the highest point of the Serre mountain, at an altitude of 549 metres, providing some truly exceptional views.

At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

This greenway is exclusively reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and rollerbladers.... Signposts are installed all along the walk. It crosses the town from east to west, from the rond-point de l'Europe to the Espace de loisirs Saint-Paul 2003, passing through the gardens and strong heritage features of our town: Jardin Saint-Vincent, Orchard des Enfants de Barbière, Jardins du Resseguin. For your safety and enjoyment, the promenade is lit at night.

This hike takes you on a journey through the history of the truffle and its exploitation, from the beginning of the 20th century. Route marked in yellow, duration 2h. You'll cross former truffle fields that have gone wild. The arrival on a limestone plateau offers an exceptional view of Saint-Paul, Saint- Restitut, Clansayes, Le Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail, and even more. The Via Rhôna, from Lapalud to Caderousse, is a temporary signposted route in southern Lapalud on the left bank towards Vaucluse. The itinerary winds across the agricultural plain as far as the Canal de Donzère then continues onwards to the foot of the Fortress of Mornas and on to Piolenc. From Li Piboulo lake, you have two options. Continue towards Caderousse along the greenway bordering the Rhone. Join the Roman town of Orange and its famous triumphal arch. About 3.8 km from Lapalud is Girardes lake, where you can go swimming or choose from a variety of water and leisure activities. Make your way gently to the Provençal village of Caderousse surrounded by dykes protecting it from the unpredictable Rhone.

This medieval town with an exceptional heritage invites you to discover its 2000 years of history. Walking and mountain biking or strolling at the marina, there is something for everybody.

On the southern slope of the plateau, locals benefit fully from the ideal situation of the village. The Romans knew it at the time and evidence of their presence here was found through excavations. Located along the river Rhone, the defile of Donzère separates the plain of Montélimar and the plain of Tricastin with majestic limestone cliffs blazing at sunset. No longer as powerful and wild as it was before the gigantic engineering work of men, the river has now settled. The village itself, former stronghold of the prince-bishops of Viviers, offers to adventurers who dare to leave the main road and the highway, a range of beautiful scenery along the village’s narrow streets and shaded squares. Stop off at the "Amis du Vieux Donzère" museum, housed in a remarkable house with a Renaissance facade, to admire collections recounting the town's history from its earliest days.

On the road to Vallon Pont d'Arc, the valley of Ibie runs for 30 km. It is born at the foot of the Coiron and ends at the entrance of the Ardeche River. The river is usually dry most of the year but well known such as the " Hole of the Moon" (the dam of the old mill of "Noé"). The Ibie valley is full of lush vineyards and rows of lavender, it is the land of limestone as well. Its homes have "couradous" which are well-ventilated terraces, that are a testament to the Golden Age of Silk and its sericulture and thread making artistry. The village is made up of charming stone homes and cobblestone pathways which are perfect for a stroll. The hamlet of Salèlles is a part of St. Maurice d'Ibie. Regardless of the destruction of many of its arched passageways along the road leading to Vallon Pont d'Arc, there remain beautiful homes with beautiful archways with stairs at its exterior and two bread ovens, one belonging to the town and the other to a private owner. The high cypres trees not far from the hamlet, mark a number of cemetaries belonging to Protestant families.

Remarkable natural site. The Ibie Valley is a sensitive and remarkable natural space. Its turquoise waters on its limestone bed offer a striking landscape. The Ibie has its source at the foot of Coiron, in Villeneuve de Berg on the edge of St Jean le Centenier, then crosses St Maurice d'Ibie to flow into the Ardèche near Vallon Pont d'Arc. Along the Béalières, old mills, waterfalls and white pebble beaches, discover this superb but fragile valley. It is not uncommon to see it dry in summer, but infiltrated in its limestone bed, it continues to flow underground, only to resurface a few hundred meters further, to hide again a little lower. To discover this superb valley, it is recommended to visit it in autumn or spring, when the greenery of the vegetation competes in beauty with the turquoise waters. Picnic areas are easily accessible for families in the village of St Maurice d'Ibie and in the hamlet of Sallèles. If you discover fossils in the riverbed, take a photo of a souvenir and put it back down: subsequent visitors will thank you and the relief will be preserved. To educate your children about the importance of water, a “Water is Life” game trail is available. For smartphone enthusiasts, the fun and connected route of Les Sallèles is what you need. Randoland trails will help you discover Villeneuve de Berg and St Maurice d'Ibie in a fun way with children aged 4 to 12. Many hikes cross this magnificent river, as well as mountain bike trails and horse riding trails. Alba is bursting with 2000 years of history…What makes Alba so unique? La Roche's hamlet built around a basalt peak and the village established around the castle, also built on a volcanic peak. Located on the edge of the massif of Coiron, surrounded by vineyard, Alba-la-Romaine is proud of its rich historical past. This 2000 years old city has an impressive feudal castle, built on a volcanic dike, fenced by many houses that make it “character village”. Alba, former capital of the Helviens, a Gallic tribe, was, at the beginning of the 1st century AD., an active Gallo-Roman city before becoming the first bishopric’s headquarters of the Vivarais at the end of the 4th century. Today, we can discover the medieval village, clustered inside its 15th century ramparts. The entire village is clad in white (limestone) and black (basalt).The facades are chequered because of the basalt and limestone, local materials used to build stunning houses, given to Alba its particular atmosphere. The castle: at an undetermined period, the Bishops of Viviers have built a square dungeon on a basaltic dike around which the population formed the first castrum (fortified city). From the middle Ages until 1904, Alba bore the name of Aps, the family name of the lordship. During the French Revolution, the castle was ransacked and sold in 1793 as a national property. In 1880, a native started the castle’s restoration. Starting from 1914, several owners succeeded one another until 1975. The restoration began with the help of the Historic Monuments administration. Listed in the supplemental inventory of the Historic Monuments, the current castle, laid out on the foundations of the medieval castles, still has its substructure.

The trail of the “Plein la vue” route (sheet 8 of our topoguide “Monts de Berg et Massif du Coiron”) immerses you in the preserved beauty of the Ardèche. Along the way, you will discover the local fauna and flora. Arriving at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view that seems straight out of a dream. The Croix de Juliau no longer sits enthroned, but the 360° panorama will still be there: your gaze will go from Villeneuve de Berg to the Dent de Rez, passing through authentic villages like Mirabel, St Jean le Centenier, St Pons, Alba la Romaine, and Valvignères, but also by Mont Ventoux, Coiron and Vercors. Don't forget your camera to capture these wide open spaces! Some legends attribute the name of Mount Juliau to Julius Caesar (who passed through there), but other sources contradict this theory. However, the Roman presence has been attested since the discovery of a villa, and a temple dedicated to the soothsayer Julius Caesar and Augustus (or Diana depending on the sources).

A bio and rural bistronomy in an environmental setting of quality with seasonal, bio and local products. Food and wines harmony between a chef and a winemaker cook ! Over 6 years have been necessary to carry out the project of catering at the Domaine Notre-Dame de Cousignac. It all started with the competition for the best winemaker cook that Raphaël won at the Exhibition SIRHA in 2013. In 2014, the winery made a partnership with the Hotel School Marie Rivier to teach to pupils how to make wine. From then on several vintages have been created... which helped to strenghten ties with chefs and catering. In 2017, Raphaël obtained an hygiene qualification for catering and the licence in 2018. An "improved table d'hôtes" has been experimented during the summer 2018 and young students of vocational school came to help. In 2019, the project takes shape. The team works out to organize a network of bio producers through "La Ruche qui dit Oui" which can supply produces to the restaurant and offers a range of quality. The aim is a bio and rural bistronomy with a bio certification level 3 (95% of the products for the restaurant have to be bio-certified). A maximum of products come from local agriculture.
