CHURCH OF SAINT-MAURICE-SUR-MOSELLE
1.3 km

CHURCH OF SAINT-MAURICE-SUR-MOSELLE

The parish of Saint Maurice, which extended from the Pont Jean to the Col de Bussang, is one of the oldest parishes in the Vosges mountains. First known as Visentine, it took the name of Saint Morise (Maurice) at the end of the 13th century or at the beginning of the 14th century. We know nothing about the place of worship that was the centre of the parish of Visentine and then Saint Maurice. The first mention of a priest dates back to the Remiremont abbey and suggests that, from that time on, a church served the Haute Moselle. In 1663, the church was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt with limited means because of the long wars of the century, but suffered the same fate in 1701, as did the school built nearby. The new church, dedicated to Saint Maurice and his martyred companions, was officially inaugurated on 5 July 1725 by the Bishop and Count of Toul. With its 350 seats, the church was too small for a population of 1,750 inhabitants. Therefore, the village entrusted the study of a project for a new building to the architect Perron de Remiremont in 1863. He presented a church with 3 ogival naves and a capacity of 1,075 seats, at an estimated cost of 140,000 francs. The location of the old cemetery was chosen. The work was awarded on 10 April 1866. The painted stained glass windows, ordered in 1867, are the work of Thiriat, a glass painter from Metz. The War of 1870 delayed the installation of the bells. It was only on 31 August 1875 that the bell founder Robert Hartmann undertook to deliver a perfect ring with 4 bells weighing 4,500 kg in total. The organs were offered by generous donators. The clock dates back to 15 August 1883.

THE CHAPEL OF THE VES
3.3 km

THE CHAPEL OF THE VES

Located at an altitude of 767m, the Chapel des Vés was built in 1863 by farmers from La Colline in Fresse-sur-Moselle, with materials which were previously part of the old village church. Its history: - 1939-1945: The Chapel was badly damaged. Only the walls were still standing. - 1948: The municipality of Fresse-sur-Moselle rebuilt the Chapel with a shelter for walkers. - 1996: 2 local volunteers undertook the renovation of the Chapel to restore its original 1863 style. - 1998: Reconstruction work began with the support of the municipality, which agreed to finance the materials. About fifty volunteers, most of them former workers or retired craftsmen, worked according to professional standards and tradition, using ancient techniques. Members of the Compagnons du Devoir who were very interested in the project offered the technical study, construction and assembly of the spire in accordance with 17th century techniques. - On 25 June 2000, the Chapelle des Vés was inaugurated in the presence of Christian Poncelet, President of the Vosges General Council and President of the Senate. - In November 2001, the work of the volunteers was rewarded with the 1st prize of the Grand Nord-Est, awarded by the FNASSEM (French Federation of Associations for the Protection of Sites and Monuments). From the church of Fresse-sur-Moselle, turn right towards the Bar du Centre and follow the Rue de la Chapelle. Open every day.

THE CHAPEL OF THE CHARCOAL BURNERS
4 km

THE CHAPEL OF THE CHARCOAL BURNERS

A first wooden chapel, topped by a tiny bell tower, was built in 1860 by Jean-Nicolas Aiguier (the owner of the place) and a few local people on the Têtote, a small rocky hill at the entrance of the hamlet to ward off bad luck. At that time, the valley of the Charbonniers was very populated, but the population of the hamlet was far from the church of Saint Maurice. For this reason, Nicolas Aiguier thought about building a place of prayer and meditation, where people could sometimes hear the Mass. From the beginning, the chapel was placed under the protection of both St Nicholas, patron saint of Lorraine, and the Virgin, Our Lady of Consolation. This is why you can still see 3 other small wooden statues somewhat mutilated by time and unfortunately hidden by large plaster statues: St Nicholas lifting 3 fingers above the miraculous barrel and holding a broken cross, St Joseph, and the Virgin Mary. The chapel of St Nicholas - Our Lady of Consolation was blessed by Priest Claudel on 6 December 1861, the feast day of the patron saint of Lorraine. Mass was celebrated regularly on Sundays and feast days. The Feast of the Charbonniers was created after the war of 1939-1945 and celebrated for several decades on 15 August, the same day as the feast of the Virgin. On that day, a mass was celebrated in the chapel and outside, because the chapel was too small. In 1987, the chapel was revamped thanks to several local associations and a financial contribution from the land owners.
