The protected ornithological reserve of Lac de La Prade, 5 km from Bazas, is home to exceptional flora and fauna. Set amidst rolling hills, the immense reservoir provides a peaceful setting for birdwatching. A large colony of grey herons makes its home here, alongside pairs of great crested grebes. The lake's slopes are also one of Gironde's priority sites for dry orchid lawns. Fishing pontoons and picnic tables are available for walkers.

The Bazas - Castets and Castillon cycle route, an essential stage in the Tour de Gironde by bike, takes you either to the Entre-deux-Mers or to the South of Gironde. The landscapes it passes through are shaped on the one hand by mixed farming: wine, livestock and poultry farming, market gardening, cereals, wicker and tobacco, and on the other hand, by a rich natural and built heritage.

Departure is from the Bazas greenway towards Bernos-Beaulac, leading you to our iconic home of the Kings of Navarre: Château de Cazeneuve. After a visit to Queen Margot?s emblematic residence and some time under the park?s giant bamboo grove, it?s on to the refreshing gorges on the banks of the Ciron. This is an easy circuit, with a shady path running alongside the mythical river, a favorite with canoeists. The loop continues along fern-lined paths and back to the Cité jacquaire.

Departing from the beautiful Place de la Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Bazas, a former stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, this loop takes you over gently undulating terrain to the the Château de Roquetaillade. The greenway occupies an old railroad line and winds through a landscape of pine trees and vineyards. All around you, the old tobacco drying sheds, the picturesque church of Le Nizan, Château Caillivet and its vineyard, and a circuit offering the most beautiful views of Château de Roquetaillade.

In front of the Lac de la Prade, take the small road that goes up towards the village of Gans. In feudal times, Gans had its own fortified castle. It was destroyed and replaced by the Château des Evêques in the 18th century. Indeed, the Bishops had made Gans their countryside and came to stay at the castle surrounded by its garenne, its orangery, its fountain and its charmilles. The 19th century church, located within the very walls of the feudal castle, is perhaps the former chapel of the castle. The town is not to be outdone when it comes to entertainment. You will perhaps have the pleasure of crossing the path of the Fifres and Tambours de Gans which punctuate certain events in the region. A night market in June and, for the more sporty, a vegetatlon are organized every year. Outside the village, the Asinerie de Larrouey welcomes young and old for milking demonstrations.

Former castral chapel, the fortified church was devastated in 1789. Nearby was built the residence of the bishops of Bazas which was destroyed in the 18th century. The XIXth century church, located in the very enclosure of the feudal castle, is perhaps the former chapel of the castle.

In feudal times, Gans had its own fortified castle. It was destroyed and replaced by the castle of the Bishops in the 18th century. Indeed, the Bishops had made Gans their country and came to stay there. As the castle threatened to ruin, Monseigneur Mongin, bishop of Bazas and member of the French Academy, undertook its reconstruction. The work, generally attributed to the architect Marsaudon, is completed by Amédée de Grégoire de Saint-Sauveur, successor of Monseigneur Mongin. The building was largely destroyed, leaving only the central forebody with three arcatures on each of the two levels.

500 meters from the village of Auros, a 1.5 km path winds through a juniper forest, on a clay-limestone soil exposed to the south. About fifteen species of wild orchids grow on this dry grassland and make the originality of the site. The discovery trail is worth a detour in spring and early summer. A picnic area has been set up at the trailhead.

The church dates from the 12th and 19th centuries. Its choir dates from the first Romanesque period, as can be seen outside the apse, held by thick buttresses. The arcaded bell tower, the stair tower and the porch date from the 19th century. A clever restoration since the year 2000 allowed it to obtain the award of the "fleurons du patrimoine" in the 2005 competition.

A bucolic place to stroll, the lake offers a remarkable setting for the diversity of its flora and fauna. A hiking trail, used by hikers and pilgrims of Compostela, allows you to discover its beauty.

The 13th century church was rebuilt by the Bordeaux architect Gustave Alaux in neo-gothic style in 1878. It preserves the 13th century dripstone walls that belonged to the former parish church. The church was also the chapel of the castle where the former barons of Auros were buried. In this church you can discover the 18th century wooden stall of the Father Abbot of Rivet.
