At the intersection, take a right then, the “Route de la Bertrane”. At the intersection go straight. Take a first right, long straight road for 4.6km. At the stop sign go right. At the intersection take a left on the D-8 (be careful – heavily travelled road). 50 meters before the roundabout, right on “Chemin Saint André. At the stop sign go straight to Sablet, biking in front of a tennis court. At the intersection go right. Go through the village in the direction of Gigondas. Cross on the left direction Gigondas (be careful, cars are coming from behind). At the stop sign go left (go across in 2 stages – be careful) cross through Gigondas. Take the direction of Vacqueyras on the D-7. In Vacqueyras, go straight. At the roundabout turn right then go 400 m further and take the first left . Follow this road (intersection on the left) to the D7. Then go to the right (be careful, lots of traffic on this road). 1 km from there, take the first road on the left (road to the right). Climb up to the Notre Dame d'Aubune chapel. Continue on the road.

On the Plateau des Courens, overlooking the village of Beaumes-de-Venise, stood a Gallo-Roman oppidum built by the Celto-Ligurians, and naturally defended by steep slopes.

Continue on the paved "Chemin de Blancas" to the left, then head due south for 300 metres and take the first road on the left, "Chemin du Receveur". Follow the unpaved "Chemin du Receveur". Opposite the equestrian center, turn right onto "Chemin de Castane". Once on this road, head south to join "Chemin de la Garonne" (tarred). Turn left and follow the road for 1.5 km to the gas station roundabout. Then turn left onto "Avenue des Sorgues" and follow it back to the "Marché agricole" parking lot.

Below a limestone cliff of several hundred meters, is the village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse which owes its name to the source of Sorgue. Kart spring, the largest in metropolitan France and the fifth largest in the world, comes from an underground basin of 1,100 km2, recovering the waters of Mount Ventoux (visible in the distance), the Vaucluse mountains, the Albion plateau and the mountain of Lure. La Sorgue, strongly protected, joined the Ouvèze then the Rhône after several subdivisions.

& Laquo; "Ora et labora"… & Laquo; "Pray and work", such is Saint-Benoît's rule that still governs the daily life of monks in the Sénanque. Built in the 12th century, the abbey is the proof of the spiritual revival of the Middle Ages born at Citeaux in Saône-et-Loire and then spread throughout Europe. Classified as a historic monument, the Sénanque is a remarkable example of Cistercian architecture made of abstinence and simplicity in the image of the spirituality it serves.

This very remarkable old oak has a surprising feature. Its trunk is split in two parts yet it is still alive. 15m high and 5m in circumference, an entire person can go inside.

The first major grouping of the Gordian resistance fighters, about thirty men, was initially based here in the spring of 1943, with Felix Poncet who unhesitatingly made his farm available. Their supplies and training were provided by officials of the Secret Army (A.S.). Then, before enrolment growth and the danger of keeping them on for too long, the decision is made to join the Ventoux maquis, more organized and better equipped.

These dry calcareous grasslands were once grazed or even cultivated with lavender. After abandoning these customs, other plants took over these areas like the famous Ophrys Drumana. Roaming through these lawns, there is a procession of butterflies and grasshoppers and it is not unusual to come across the European mantis. Much more rare and very discreet, the Spiked Magician, the longest bush cricket in Europe, also roams the lawns. It is a protected species in France.

A limestone formation with an original topography is characterized as karstic, characterized by underground drainage which causes corrosion of the rock. Here we see a lapiaz. This surface geological formation is created by the runoff of rainwater that dissolves the rock or by cryoclasty (freezing and thawing of the water infiltrated in the rock). It is what forms this impressive rocky entablature traversed by faults and fissures.

In August 1989, the fire started from the bottom of the Oule valley located a little further north, and ravaged 338ha of forest in Cabrières d'Avignon and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Here, some islands of cedars from the Algerian Atlas still bear the scars of that fire, but most have resisted. Others were replanted in 1991.

In the 12th century, Cistercian monks did not go too far to find the stones to build the abbey of Sénanque. This limestone, a microcodium, is the result of the erosion of the Dalle des Busans, upstream, weakened by the Microcodium bacteria 40 million years ago. The fruits of this erosion have accumulated in an ancient lake, at the current location of the Sénanque farm. The monks thus used small quarries to build the abbey.

Conifers of majestic and imposing appearance, the cedars are distinguished by their bluish or silver color. These large cedars were planted in 1860 to the north of the village and extend over five hectares on the slopes of the Monts de Vaucluse. It is an important forest species, its fine, light and aromatic wood is used in woodwork or as a framework.

July 10, 1943, a German fighter plane, Messerschmitt Bf 109 model, crashes on the hills of the Sénancole valley. All night, the resistance fighters will hide to prevent German troops from searching for the plane.
