Tour quiet easy around Najac to discover very old fountains in wooded and quiet surroundings. Start possible from the holiday village VAL-VVF at the locality Puech Moutonniers. Essential to the village life the fountains were supplied by drainage water from the Terre-Rouge/La Planquette plateau. They are called “griffouls”. The first fountain was built in 1344 in the Bourguet area into a granite block. Some ancient consuls and bishops faces are sculpted on it. The fountain was used until the beginning of the 20th century.

And why not an adventure at najac ? The medieval village of Najac is situated on a steep hill and is encircled by the river Aveyron. This highly perched village attracts visitors by its authenticity and its heritage : Royal Fortress, Church of Saint-jean, Bridge of Saint Blaise... Follow our guides and relive the middle Ages. Set off into the countryside or on the river : there are many mapped paths for ramblers and trails for mountain biking, zipling, canoe/kayak, fishing... Start possible from the Holiday Village VAL-VVF. The Chestnut tree was (with the rye) the basic foods for a long time. It saved a lot of inhabitants from the famine in times of scarcity.

Tour approachable for everybody around the hamlet of Mergieux. However some parts have a difference in height quite important. This tour do not start from Najac, it is accessible by car or from the tours n°6 and n°8. The main part of this tour is in the forest. Some conifers were planted for the forestry development but the broad-leaved trees constituted the forest cover until the early 20th century. The forests around Mergieux holiday village are use by the ONF (Forestry Commission).

Family circuit.

This 232km trail offers hikers a formidable walk through Tarn’s patchwork landscapes. This Grande Randonnée circuit, which covers a distance of approximately 232 kilometres, is a wonderful getaway to discover all the splendours that characterise the Tarn department. All sorts of natural and heritage landscapes will be offered to your delighted and amazed eyes. We can mention the Causses in the north-west of the department, the medieval bastides, the plain of the Tarn with the isthmus of Ambialet, the granite plateau of Sidobre as well as the Montagne Noire in the south... This long journey will undoubtedly give you the desire to get to know the Tarn in its every corner, in search of the authentic.

The clear waters of the Bonnan wind their way through a succession of mown meadows, full of a myriad of butterflies. A real explosion of species and colours in the heart of a natural area. Species diversity : This part of the Bonnan valley is made up of a succession of meadows, formerly used by sheep, now mown. This practice is conducive to the development of a wide variety of flowers, particularly orchids, which are much appreciated by pollinators. The contact between the dry hillsides and the wetlands that accompany the Bonnan contributes further to making this valley one of the richest in the Tarn in terms of species diversity. A particular wetland formation with tall herbs develops on a plot of land at the edge of the path: the hemp-leaf orchid can be seen here, as well as the tall orchid, an orchid of wetlands. From the different colours of the flowers and butterflies, the smell of the cut grass to the sound of the deer bellowing in the valley, the senses are always awake here.

In the heart of the medieval village of Castelnau de Montmiral, L'Auberge des Arcades is the place to enjoy a drink with friends in the Café, with its breathtaking views over the historic buildings, and to savour the local produce with all your senses. This gothic bridge was built in the 13th century, along the primitive road witch led toward Villefranche de Rouergue. It allowed merchants and pilgrims to cross the Aveyron river in all seasons, on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostelle.

This used to be a rest area (hence the name : La Pause) on the medieval road (former roman path) leading to Najac via the St Blaise bridge. Thanks to renowned fairs and traditional markets, this part of town remained a flourishing neighborhood until the end of 19th century.

This is a defensive strucutre built at the same time as the forteress by Alphonse de Poitiers. It is used to be part of the wall that surrounded the city of Najac until the 18th century.

Built at the foot of the fortress, this residence dating from the end of the Middle Ages, is said to have been the residence of the Senechal du Rouergue in the day when Najac was the administrative and judiciary capital of the Rouergue province.

This chapel was previously linked to a hospital and a cementery. The gate is the only remaining item. It was linked to and relied upon the Dômerie d’Aubrac.

This public fountain deeply carved in a huge mass of granite is at the center of the village. A latin inscription relates the date of its construction and the name of the Conuls under whom it was erected.

Organized to accommodate markets, the place, long and narrow, is surrounded by stone or wood covered houses from 15 and 16th centuries. They all have porches under which the stalls were sheltered for sale.

The Toulouse-Brive Railway was built in 1860. In Laguépie-Najac section, there are 13 bridges and 13 tunnels !

Imagine the activity in the living room a few decades ago, when you see the original cement tiles. But for your comfort, you'll find all the contemporary equipment you need to cook to your heart's content and a cosy living room to relax in.
