Camping de La Gourjade: Explore Castres, Tarn's Gems

This beautiful and long hike, which partly follows the Agout river, offers many viewpoints on the Sidobre and the plains of Castres, passing through the medieval village of Burlats, the ruins in Gourteau and along the fountain path. Time 5.5 hours - Distance 19,5 km Romanesque architectural treasures on the floor of the valley. In Burlats, the Counts of Trencavel built a sumptuous residence away from major axes, hidden in a fold of the Agoût valley. Real Treasure, perfectly preserved Romanesque architecture which is rare for a civil building, this pavilion is named after Adelaide, a countess with violet eyes who was sung and courted by the famous troubadours Arnaud de Mareuil and Alfonso II of Aragon. You will enjoy beautiful views, but beautiful climbs as well.

Small path through the undergrowth that drops you off at the Paradise’s falls. Out and back trail. Time: 30 min - Distance: 400 m The Paradise’s Falls trail begins at the parking next to the bridge and the river. A small path leads to the falls.

Walk along one of the longest boulder rivers of the Sidobre (60% of your hike) near the village Lafontasse. In the chaos lower down hides Saint Dominic's Cave. Adventurers could enter the cave through a narrow opening, difficult to find. Time: 20 min to 1.5 hour - Distance: 500 m to 3.5 km From the parking area, pass by the Egg Rock and walk along the chaos (river of rocks). At the end of it, take the small road to get back to the parking area. On this road you may discover some granite quarry blocks, which, as wild animals, remain hidden in the undergrowth. You will also see some typical Sidobre meadows bordered by planted stones who follow, but do not resemble, one another. It’s not recommended to enter the cave for children under 8 years old and during bad weather. Be sure you wear good walking shoes. (20 min) On the road, before or after this walk, you should not miss the incredible Baptistou Rock.(out and back 20 min)

This most famous waterfall in the Sidobre massif has to be deserved after a short but steep trail through the undergrowth. An exceptional geological site of granite and schist

Why don't you walk in the footsteps of the granite workers? Time 10 to 20 minutes - Distance 0.5 to 1km From the Peyro Clabado, via the quarrymen's cross, to the old workplaces, walk in the footsteps of the former stonemasons and discover the remains of their traces before the industrialization of granite quarries. After this short walk, be sure to visit of the Espace Jean Cros next to the Sphinx to learn more about these Peiraires!

Time: 2 hours - Distance: 6,9 km Unusual shaped rocks and typical architecture built of local granite will be on show in the Durencuse Valley. Departure at the Place du monument aux morts (War memorial square), next to the town hall. This hike will enable you to go across this sculpted and mysterious landscape so typical of the Sidobre, among beautiful beech groves, chestnut groves and coniferous forests. You will discover the traditional granite habitat from the start of this walk as well as by crossing the hamlet of Taillades where stones were driven directly into the ground to stand vertically, before going down along the small river of the Durencuse. Finally, you will go up back to the village of St Salvy passing by some famous Sidobre rocks such as the Grotte du loup or the Chaos de la Balme. A chaos in the Sidobre, is a river of granite balls formed by erosion, which tumbled down the slope and got stuck in the bed of the stream.

Several granite giants are just waiting there for you to discover them in the maze of the invisibles. Time: 25 min to 1,5 hour - Distance: 1 to 3 km Along the most famous path of the Sidobre you will see, among others, the Goose rock (le Roc de l'Oie) and the Devil's armchair (le fauteuil du Diable). Surrounded by the Crémaussel's undergrowth, you will walk, search, climb, imagine... from one viewfinder to another, in search of secret passages and other remarkable rocks in this labyrinth of the "invisibles". Walking time: 1.5 hr for the complete circuit (return trip to the three cheeses and large loop passing by the wall of death). 45 min for the large loop only. 20 min for the shorter loop (follow the signs back to the car park before the devil's armchair).

A pleasant discovery of a 1960-1970s model trains network. Immerse yourself into our region setting, switch on the animations, visit the museum! Castres Miniature Train Network, with its 150 metres of track, looks like a real railway. You have to see the rabbit that is afraid by the train, the priest ringing the bell and so many other scenes animated by you! The first objective of the network is to collect and preserve railways memories of the region. An old photos collection is available in the little museum.

Green and freshness leisures heaven, Gourjade Park is the real "green lung"of the city of Castres. 53 hectares of greenery, for pleasure and relaxation, in free access! Many activities are available: walks or mountain bike rides, orienteering races, children games,nine-hole golf course, picnic… This park, situated in a site occupied since Neolihic Era, has been acquired in 1977 by Castres from De Boissezon family. This Domain, whose main activities were farming and ranching, includes a XIXth century mansion and farm buildings.

Church from the XIXth century located in the Albinque area. Work on the Neo-Gothic style church began in 1867. In the middle of the XIXth century, following the extension of the city, it becomes an imperative to build a new church. The middle-class society wanted to shut out the workers from the churches they attended.

The Jean Jaurès Museum presents the life and commitments of this great orator, writer, journalist and younguest member of France Parliament (26 years old), born in Castre on 1859, assassinated in Paris on 1914. The museum provides a chronological an thematic journey of discovery and compréhension of the life of Jean Jaurès. It will allow you to better understand this exceptional pacifist man with a tragic destiny.

Private mansion from the XVIIth century situated in the centre of the city. During the reign of Henri IV, the establishment of the tribunal of the "Chambre de l'Edit", with the arrival of numerous magistrates, marks the beginning of a period of prosperity, to which numerous private mansions are testament. The first owner of this mansion was sieur Oulès, a wealthy cloth merchant. Combining bricks and stones, the building showcases a remarkable harmony between its corbelled turrets, lattice bays around the door of honor and the oculus of the door used as the vanishing point.

Church from the XIVth century. In the Middle Ages, Castres becomes a stopover on the way to Compostela mainly due to the presence of the relics of St Vincent de Saragosse. Saint Jacques de Villegoudou church is named for former religious hospital for the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela. Built at the end of the XIVth century, the church has been destroyed on 1567 and only the the bell tower remained. The baptistery is entirely fresco painted by Nicolais Greshny, famous artist.

Unusual, poetic and timeless, the multicoloured houses on the Agout are a picture postcard vision of Castres. Formerly workshops of tanners, parchment makers or weavers, these colorful houses with pastel shades are half-timbered and date from the 13th century. Their marvelous facades have since been restored several times in order to saveguard their delicate and medieval charm. Almost unreal depending on the light, they can be contemplated from the front along the river banks or from the different bridges of the city. The most difficult thing will be to capture the best moment to observe them: the evening lights, the changes of weather, the reflections on the water.

The church Notre-Dame de la Platé has been destroyed four times, rebuilt five! It is a monument not to be missed in Castres. The church of Notre-Dame de la Platé was first mentioned in the 11th century. The present building replaces an older church destroyed by the Protestants during the Wars of Religion, to reinforce the fortified city wall. Its construction began in 1607 and was extensively remodeled in 1741 in the Jesuit and Baroque style of the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The presbytery was built in 1755, and the bell tower in 1771. Closed for 25 years for restoration, it was returned to worship in 2021, more resplendent than ever!

Private mansion from the XVIIth century situated in the centre of the city. Built during the XVIIth century, this mansion belonged to the Maréchal Jean-Louis de Ligonnier maternal grandfather. He was born in Castres in 1680 but he leaved it in 1697 after the revocation of the Edict of Nante (1685). He spent his military career in the english army where he was made field marshall. He died in 1770, with full military honours. Outstanding due to its caryatids bearing a Renaissance loggia enhanced with four inoic pillars, as well as its ramped, red-iron staircase.
