The Fronsadais, a land of many landscapes, allows you to walk between hills and valleys, between marshes and vineyards or in the forest. If you like legendary places, here's a loop that combines the Château de Vayres with several Templar sites. Starting from the bastide town of Libourne, the tour follows the river as a common thread. To reach the château and its famous staircase, worthy of a ?balcony overlooking the Dordogne?, you'll need to pass through Arveyres and its Templar Commandery. And to return to Libourne, in Cadarsac, the church, founded by the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem, houses a sacred but unfortunately hidden fountain. Take a moment to relax at Lac de Cadarsac. It's also a great place to watch migrating geese.

Libourne is a royal bastide (a planned new town) created in 1270 under the orders of King Henry II of England. He was the knight Sir Roger de Leyburn, recently promoted to the honorary position of the King’s Lieutenant, who was tasked with its construction on the very site of the ancient Gallo-Roman port of Condatis. Over the centuries, Leyburn underwent Gallicization and became Libourne. Libourne, located at the confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers, in the upper reaches of the Gironde Estuary, has the unique characteristic of being the foremost shipping port on the Dordogne, nearly 100 km inland! This unique location bolstered its imports and exports and the development of a flourishing trade, in which wine predominated. As a consequence it is one of the wealthiest bastide towns in Aquitaine. In the Middle Ages, a bastide was a new town. These new towns were built to facilitate commercial and agricultural trade, bring together the population and assert one’s presence in the region. Within its ramparts, penetrated by six gates on the river side and three on the land side, it developed over 32 hectares, half of which were used for agriculture. After the Hundred Years’ War, the town had more than 530 houses, a wonderful town hall rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, two churches, a Cordeliers’ convent and two hospitals. In the 18th century, the town began to expand outside its walls, works were undertaken on the site of the moats to create avenues, and glassworks were established in 1749. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the wealth generated by the wine trade enabled high-grade buildings to be constructed. The town prospered over the 19th century: Libourne would construct its rail station, repair the slipways in its harbor and span its rivers with two bridges. Libourne also owes its reputation thanks to illustrious characters, including the Duke Decazes, minister to Louis XVIII, Jules Steeg, a pastor and politician, or the painter René Princeteau. It was also the birthplace of the photographer Eugène Atget and the jurists Léon Duguy and Jean Carbonnier. Starting from a confluence, the town itself became a confluence - of rivers, lands, languages and people. Today, it opens its gates to you, and it is you who will delve into its unique history.

These hilly routes take in vineyards and woods and cross the communes of Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac, Beychac-et-Caillau, Salleboeuf, Pompignac, Montussan, Yvrac and Saint-Loubès. Since 2015, Sainte-Eulalie and Yvrac have benefited from 4 new links to different routes. Please note: since September 30, 2020, the northern part is open all year round from Saint-Sulpice (15 km trail and the 23 km trail). The southern part remains closed during the hunting season.

Some 15 km from Bordeaux in the direction of Libourne, Château de Vayres, former property of King Henri IV, is a remarkable historical site in more ways than one. The feudal origin of this important defensive stronghold can be found in the square keep, the castelet and the towers. It was in the 17th century that Vayres took on the appearance of a Renaissance castle. Note its classical facade, the refinement of the main gallery, which was designed by the architect of the Cordouan Lighthouse, and its monumental double-revolution staircase above the moat. Exceptional collection of tapestries At the Château de Vayres, stroll through the elegant formal gardens overlooking the left bank of the Dordogne. An enigmatic journey through the history of the castles fascinates young and old alike and, every summer, the Cape and Sword Festival brings together the region's finest swordsmen.

Located halfway between Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion, our gîte is set in an outbuilding that used to be the wine storehouse of our stone Girondine house. Access is via a shared gate, but the entrance to the gîte is independent. Le Clos Bernon is located in the old quarters of the city of Libourne, a stone's throw from the Condat chapel, the nature reserve and the vineyards. For your stay, we offer three guest rooms on the first floor of the house. The Coco suite is composed of a room equipped with a bed 160, a shower room and a toilet open on the private living room of the suite (sofa bed). The Angel room has a bed 160, a bathroom open on the room and a separate toilet. The Giorgio room has a double bed, a bathroom with shower and bathtub and a separate toilet; it also has an independent access through an external staircase. Each room is equipped with a television. Breakfast is served in the dining room or outside depending on the season.

In Pomerol, Château Beauregard is a flagship from the smallest appellation of the great wines of Bordeaux. A Gironde charterhouse in bloom awaits you in the north-east of the village near Libourne. Created in the 11th century by the Knights of Malta, the Château was reborn in the 1990s after being bought by private investors. Come and share this new impetus in a property with refined charm. Renovation of the vineyard and cellars, plantations, soil drainage: the rehabilitation of Château Beauregard is now bearing fruit. At maturity, the grapes are picked by hand and stored in small 30 kilo crates to respect the integrity of each berry. The moment of tasting is a sweet privilege in front of the lotus flowers and water lilies that dress the moat of Château Beauregard.

This Romanesque church of Saintongeais style is, between 1171 and 1613, a priory of the abbey of Guîtres. Its Romanesque apse, vaulted in the cul de four, is decorated on the outside with seven blind semicircular arches, whose archivolts are carved with diamond points and wolf's teeth. The choir is barrel vaulted. The square bell tower on the transept dates from the 13th century. In 1868, the construction of the present neo-gothic bell tower on the western part of the building led to the destruction of the Romanesque façade.

This church is composite style. The vault of the sanctuary, as well as the semicircular door and the narrow windows visible on the south wall date from the 11th century, the nave with ogival vault was built in the 12th century. The building was remodelled in the 19th century. The choir is decorated with relatively well-preserved paintings. The church contains a listed Gothic statue of the Virgin and Child.

A fine old estate dating back to 1747 and run by the Noel family since 1936. The château practises selective farming only.

Château de la Rivière dominates the Dordogne valley and the 59 hectares of its vineyards. Built in 1577 by Gaston de l'Isle on the remains of a defensive camp erected by Charlemagne, it was redesigned by an unknown architect imbued with the practices of Viollet le Duc around 1890. A prestigious 16th century castle, it imitates the style of 14th century fortresses with its towers and machicolations, its parapet walk and its loopholes. This building has vast underground cellars. They are an ideal place for maturing wine and the galleries house bottle racks carved into the rock. Visits to the cellars and the château, which has been awarded the Vignobles et Découverte label, are organised by appointment all year round and three times a day in the summer. Visitors can also visit the armoury and the shop for a tasting of two vintages.

In the 12th century, a semi-circular apse, decorated on the outside with blind arches, was added to the main nave built in the 11th century. The sanctuary, vaulted in cul de four, is separated from the nave by a large semicircular arch. The fortified bell tower was built to the west of the nave in 1687.

Château de la Rivière was built in 1577 on the remains of a fortified encampment raised by Charlemagne. It was restored in the 19th century under the eye of a group of renowned architects including Viollet Le Duc. Its 3 hectares of underground cellars are an ideal setting for maturing the wines it produces. The château’s grounds are open to all. The five Gîtes de France Bacchus 4 épis B&B rooms were awarded the golf “Best Of” award for wine tourism in 2007, in the “Accommodation” category.
