After seven years of work, the Turkish boudoir of Marie-Antoinette and Josephine opened again his doors in May 2015. Marie-Antoinette’s turkish boudoir Hidden in an entresol of the castle over the ceremonial room of the queen, the Turkish boudoir was the intimacy space of Marie-Antoinette in Fontainebleau. Fitted out in 1777 on plans of the architect Richard Mique and decorated by the brothers Rousseau, it shows the luxurious preferences of the old regime for the Oriental style. After the Revolution, all the furniture of the boudoir have been changed to establish the Empress Josephine’s private bedroom. The place have been decorated with Jacob-Desmalter’s creations adorned with precious fabrics. Alcove, mirrors, curtains driven by pulleys ... this exceptional ensemble has been restored thanks to the support of INSEAD and the generosity of the subscribers of the operation. They have been very helpful for Fontainebleau. The restoration work on the boudoir has focused on its painted decorations and its precious furniture made of fabrics woven with gold. Particularly fragile, the Turkish boudoir is now integrated into a new tour dedicated to the privacy of sovereigns in Fontainebleau The guided visit of the Turkish boudoir can ONLY be done in groups of seven people maximum. The Château de Fontainebleau is a big part of French history! This vast building, in both classical and Renaissance style, is not only famous for witnessing Napoleon's imperial adventure. From the royal charter of 1137 to the fall of the Second Empire in 1870, the Palace of Fontainebleau saw the lives of the greatest French sovereigns from day to day. The original medieval fortress was replaced by a Renaissance palace under the guiding hand of Francois I. At that time, two Italian artists, Primaticcio and Il Rosso vied in talent and founded the first School of Fontainebleau. The Galerie François I, which leads from the royal apartments to the chapel of the Convent of the Holy Trinity, is most original with its décor of frescoes, stucco and carved wood in praise of François I. The Ballroom was completed at the time of the last Valois kings, under Primaticcio’s direction. With Henri IV, the new Bourbon dynasty took over the palace, and built new rooms with interior decoration placed in the hands of the artists of the second School of Fontainebleau. Louis XIII completed the work started by his father. Under the Sun King Fontainebleau continued to be the royal family home, and the Grand Dauphin was born there in 1661. The king’s nieces were married from Fontainebleau, and the Edict of Nantes was revoked there in 1685. Louis XV and Louis XVI would spend the autumn there and initiated new, large scale building works and interior doing-ups. After the French Revolution, Napoleon I found the palace completely emptied of its furniture but intact. He undertook to refurnish the apartments and brought the palace back to its former glory as the home of the sovereign. Napoleon Bonaparte spent his last days there before his abdication in 1814 and departure for the Elba. Louis-Philippe was the first sovereign to order a complete restoration of Fontainebleau. The restoration of the Empire in 1852 gave renewed importance to the palace, and Napoleon III became strongly attached to this home, staying there regularly with his court. Housed in the Louis XV wing, the Napoleon I museum is dedicated to the Emperor and his family, with a large collection of objects from his everyday life, weapons used in military campaigns and gifts he received. The Chinese museum, created by Empress Eugenie, displays works of art from the Far East. The Jeu de Paume court, thought to be the oldest of the three surviving in France, is open to the public with demonstrations and introductory games. Le Nôtre's French gardens, the Queen’s English garden with its Fountain of Diana, the hedge maze and the Cour des Adieux are open to the public all year round. Boat excursions on the Etang aux Carpes or horse-drawn carriage rides are available. The Domain of the Fontainebleau Palace is inscribed at the UNESCO Humanity World Heritage. Beside the beautiful parish church, the ancient graveyard became a medieval garden designed upon the theme of "live and death". Twelve rectangles symbolise the twelve apostles and the twelve month of the year. As in the 13th century, the rectangles bordered by sandstone pavement are supposed to produce medical herbs, which are protected by willow branches. The flowerbeds are more decorative and surrounded by small box trees are reminding of the spiritual lectures of the symbols in the 15th century. The plants, which were all regularly used for medical purposes in the Middle Ages, bring back to memory almost forgotten smells. This medieval garden is open every day and the entrance is free. Please note that picking is forbidden, due to the toxicity of some plants.

The local church has on its turret top the head of a pig legend has it that the village’s inhabitants refused help to their neighbour village during the great plague of pestilence in the 15th century and the bishop condemned the village not to have a simple weathercock but also a pig head as symbol on the church turret it spins according to the wind directions. Housed in a new building, its collection of old and modern bikes will make you travel accross the life of the nineteenth and twentieth century.

The Moret Nuns Barley Sugar has been well-known and appreciated for more than 300 years, It was originally made by the Benedictine nuns who, in 1638, founded a house in Moret, under the name of the Priory of Our Lady of Angels. This sweet, unique in its own way, was the delight of the most important people who carried of large quantities when the Court came to Moret. After having prospered under Louis XIV and gone through a period of glory until 1758, the monastery when through a number of ups and downs and disappeared in 1792. Production also stopped during the Revolution and even the secret recipe seemed to have disappeared forever, washed away with the nuns by the revolutionary tide. Luckily, after the bad days, a nun from the former Moret priory, Sister Felicity, came back with her secret to live in the Moret-sur-Loing region. Before dying, she confided the secret recipe to a faithful friend. Later, when other nuns came to live in Moret, the pious confident, in compliance with the recommendations of the deceased nun, lost no time in handing over the precious formula. In 1853, production started to grow again. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the nuns produced and sold their speciality in a corner of the Place Royale in front of the church. The nuns encountered all kinds of difficulties in the 1960’s. They had to stop production and leave Moret in 1972. In 1970, Sister Marie-André handed the secret of barley sugar to Mr. Jean Rousseau, confectioner. Thanks to the association “Produits et Terroir” this centuries-old speciality has been brought back to life and is being produced again. Come and admire the magnificent wall paintings in this church, known as the Chapelle de Lourps! The chapel of Lourps is today isolated on its hillside bordered by the Voulzie. But before the Revolution, it was attached to the adjacent castle and served a hamlet whose houses disappeared during the 19th century. Its rectangular plan and gable roof make it a simple building. It has no spire and its bell is housed in the roof structure. Its particularity is revealed inside, with magnificent wall paintings from the 13th and 15th centuries! These were discovered thanks to explorations during the major restoration work that began in the 1980s and lasted 12 years. This work was carried out following the collapse of the choir vault in 1966, which resulted in the chapel being closed to the public. Inside the chapel, you will find a panel describing the different stages of the restoration and a historical booklet to learn more about this real treasure, only 8 km southwest of Provins! The "little house by the Seine", dear to the heart of the "impressionist" poet, has become a museum run by the Department. In 1874, Stéphane Mallarmé moved in right next door to the bridge of Valvins for regular visits. From 1874 to his death , in 1898 , Stephane Mallarmé loved to stay in this old auberge that became his house, facing the Seine and the forest of Fontainebleau. Today , the museum dedicated to him has restored the charm of the summer house, through the furniture and property of the poet, his library and the works of his sculpting and painting friends. The beautiful garden where Mallarmé loved to care for his flowers, more than he cared for his own appearance, contribute to the memorial site. In the ground-floor rooms, temporary exhibitions complete the evocation of the exceptional writer who played a starring role in the intellectual and artistic life of his times. The museum is a faithful replica of the artist’s world, the small Japanese "cabinet" and bedrooms. It is decorated with objects dear to the poet like the Saxe clock that appears in the “frissons d’hiver”, smaller laqueur boxes, the fans, English books, Edgar Allen Poe’s translations or his famous pipes.
