Wander through the streets of a little mountain hamlet and the surrounding pine forests and immerse yourself in the legend of famous military leader Hannibal at the head of his army and 47 elephants. This Comfort Walk is a fun way to discover the story of Hannibal's passage through the Alps. Calm circuit, at the heart of Haute-Maurienne ! From Bramans head towards Le Planay. This wonderfully peaceful ride through unspoilt countryside also provides an opportunity to visit the beautiful little church of Saint-Pierre d'Extravache. This circuit is equiped of a poor road surface. And there is light traffic. There are possibilities to drink water and to eat in Bramans. The nearest bike repair shop is located in Termignon. You will have the opportunity to discover the Saint-Pierre-d'Extravache Church, listed as an historic monument.

Set out to conquer the Esseillon forts. From one side of the Arc river to the other you'll take a magical leap back in time. This shady walk takes you on a journey to discover two hundred years of local history. Ever unperturbed, the Redoute Marie-Thérèse awaits you! Set off at a brisk pace on the Chemin du Petit Bonheur, a trail cherished by locals, and take in the invigorating scents of spruce and fir trees. Under the watchful eye of the green woodpecker, you'll only hear the sound of its beak on the weathered tree trunks. Standing proud on its unconquerable promontory, the giant of the valley offers you a journey into the military history of Haute Maurienne Vanoise, that takes just a few minutes. A true emblem of the valley, Redoute Marie-Thérèse has become the iconic representative of the five Esseillon forts. Awe-inspiring? To say the least! Their construction began in 1817 to protect the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia from possible French attacks. Massive, monumental, they form a row at the narrowest point of the valley. And what about Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge) as sensational as its height above the gorges is breathtaking? But fear not, even the most faint-hearted have managed to cross it, so you can do it too!

In a typical mountain village atmosphere, the intimacy of the secret alleyways will enchant you. A delightful and authentic stroll through the sunny plains of Bramans awaits you. This village trail is a true breath of fresh air for both young and old. You're sure to come across locals, well used to this little journey through the countryside. A gentle breeze from the valley, the coolness of summer evenings under the setting sun... This is what "navigating"* is all about! And if you happen to be in the area on 15th August, make sure you come and admire the period costumes at the traditional festival.

This is an easy, mostly singletrack itinerary presenting no real technical difficulty. The itinerary visits the ARC riverbank via the "Chemin du Petit Bonheur" (or "Happy-go-lucky Trail"), returning via a pleasant singletrack path through the forest. This fairly flat, highly accessible trail takes you through the quiet hamlet of Le Châtel where tranquillity reigns!

Imagine crossing Val Cenis Bramans on the back of an elephant? Finish the tour with a trip to the Verney district and let yourself be transported into the story of Hannibal and his caravan. The Carthaginian general Hannibal himself is said to have passed through Bramans with his army and elephants. The White Stream waterfall struggles in times of drought, but even in the height of summer, it offers an oasis of freshness to delight both young and old. Amongst snow-covered heather and pine forests, step onto Chemin du Petit Bonheur (Path of Little Pleasures), a haven of tranquility that you won't want to leave.

The name Bramanette may sound sweet enough but don't be fooled! The climb presents no technical difficulties but is physically challenging. Fortunately, you'll be rewarded with the superb Bramanette Alpine pastures and a singletrack descent that's just perfect! You'll start with a 900-metre elevation gain and the higher you climb, the steeper it gets! This will get your heart and legs working hard! Then you'll find yourself on the Alpine pastures of Bramanette where there's a mountain refuge of the same name. This is a magnificent spot at which to enjoy a well-deserved breather and enjoy the soothing scenery. For much of the descent you'll be on singletrack paths, some of which are technically challenging, that zigzag between the forest tracks. This itinerary is very much an all-rounder as it requires excellent physical fitness on the way up and technical mastery for the descent. Take this trail for an easygoing journey on the sunny side of the mountain, to get to know the mountain zone better. In early summer, it's decked out in splendour. Nature reveals its secrets. Early in the morning, the dewdrops look like diamonds clinging to the tall grass. Then you smell the resinous scent of Scots pine warmed by the rising sun. Welcome to an island with a particularly dry climate. It's home to rare species that can withstand the aridity. On the banks of the river, you'll appreciate the contrast of freshness in all seasons. Go back to 1800 and follow the story of a pioneering telecommunications marvel. How were messages circulated throughout Napoleon's Empire? The ingenious Chappe telegraph network is a technical feat that's been unearthed from the past. There were three of them in Maurienne, and each post had its own name. On this surprising walk, you'll come near the monolith, that iconic limestone giant. Picture this: cabins positioned every 10 kilometres between Paris and Venice. At the heart of this enchanting forest dotted with Scots pines, imagine the exchanges of visual signals between Mollard Fleury in Sardières, Courberon in Avrieux and Plan de l’Ours in Saint-André. Located between Bramans and Le Verney, two villages in the same municipality, this church does not, however, do by half measures! Although completely rebuilt, it still offers its furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries due to local artists. Prides of the country, the baroque furniture adorning the building, rebuilt between 1936 and 1938 due to the instability of the gypsum ground, were mostly made by artists from the village or the valley. Observe the majestic main altarpiece where the vine and its grapes are wrapped around twisted columns which soar towards a flamboyant canopy! Raise your eyes and look at the beam of colored glory that separates the nave from the choir: it is said to have been offered in gratitude to the Virgin by an inhabitant of the village who had lost himself in the old iron mines of Colombière. , in the Bramans mountains… What an adventure! Nearby, the chapel of the Congregation is located between the presbytery and the parish hall.

As a result of hunting and logging, the deer had all but disappeared from the Savoy forests. Reintroduced between 1958 and 1973, it has adapted remarkably well to the mountain environment to form a fine population. In autumn the mating season, called “the roar” gives rise to spectacular fighting between males, but it is the raucous and powerful cries of the deer that bring the valley to life. The female deer, the hind, generally lives in a family group comprising the fawns born in the most recent year and the previous year´s generation.

Sardières is one of the four hamlets of the municipality of Sollières-Sardières. It is located on a pretty plateau at 1,500 m in altitude with a clear and panoramic view of the valley of Maurienne. The old part of the village is full of character with alleys and traditional houses. The church is part of the Baroque religious heritage (open from 1st July to 4th September to visitors on Monday, Thursday and Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm – free of charge).

The boreal or Tengmalm´s owl (Aegolius funereus) is a small owl inhabiting the coniferous forests. It feeds mainly on small rodents and is essentially nocturnal. Its territorial song is a series of melancholic “pou pou” calls. The song of the Tengmalm´s owl echœs once again in the French forests thanks to the return of the black woodpecker. The black woodpecker bores holes in tree trunks and the owl loves these cavities to nest.

Ÿou are now crossing the Plan de la Croix. These flat areas are rare in the mountains and have always been used by the mountain people to harvest hay. These hay meadows are a remarkable habitat for a number of birds that breed only in these areas where large flowers and tall grasses grow. Attune your ears and you may hear the typical singing of the quail, whose mnemotechnical onomatopœia could be “wet-my-lips”. Traditional agricultural practices allow the presence of a large number of flora species, unlike areas of intensive agriculture. The excessive soil improver that enriches the grasslands with nutrients reduces the number of species present. There is now a contest for the best flowering meadows which aims to reward these traditional practices: the meadows of Plan de la Croix have been the winners of this contest.

Here remains the remains of a church whose tradition traces the foundation to two disciples of St. Peter. The oldest part, the apse, dates back to the 11th century. It is one of the rare testimonies of the Romanesque period in Savoy. "In mountainous regions, at a distance from urban centres and in contrast to them, the sturdy and apsed chapels with culs-de-four apses, as is still the case with Saint-Pierre d'Extravache in the municipality of Bramans, gave way without transition to buildings of Baroque structure". The trail you go up crosses the old meadows now colonised by conifers, especially the mountain pine. This pine (Pinus uncinata) takes its name from its cones which carry hooks on the scales. Its dark green needles are joined together in pairs and measure 4 to 8 cm. The mountain pine favours the dry, steep slopes. Ÿou may confuse it with the Scots pine that you will also find along your way.

Geological curiosity famous for its climbing, thin needle of cargneule with warm shades, yellow ochre, 93 meters high overlooking the forest of Plan Bois. Gateway to the Vanoise National Park. The Monolithe is the site of the inauguration of the Vanoise National Park and is a developed site. This needle that emerges in the middle of the pines is composed of cargneule, a rock of particularly hard sedimentary origin that has resisted erosion while the less resistant rocks that surrounded it have disappeared. First climbed in 1957, the monolith now attracts thousands of climbers from all over the world to attack this 93-metre giant.

The European silver fir (Abies alba) is quite rare in the forests of the southern slope (known as the adret) of Haute-Maurienne. The fir tree, however, finds the conditions are favourable for its growth in the small, fresh and damp valley that you cross. The rest of the forest around the Monolith is almost entirely composed of pines and spruces. The fir can be identified by its needles, which seem to grow flat along the branch. If you turn them over you will see two white marks. The bark is a smooth, silver grey. The fir cones grow upwards, unlike those of its cousin, the spruce.

The Vallon de Polset lies at an altitude of 1820 m, in the commune of Modane, in the Parc national de la Vanoise.
