Le SAFARY: Uncover the gems of Sausheim and Alsace

The tour passes through the village centre and along the banks of the Quatelbach and Ill rivers in a rural setting. It passes through several local heritage sites marked by explanatory plaques of the "Friends of Old Sausheim".

From the Franche-Comté to Switzerland, the EuroVélo 6 itinerary gives way to a timeless Alsace boasting thatched houses and stork nest alongside the Canal du Rhône au Rhin (Rhône Canal to the Rhine). Upon arriving in Mulhouse, take the bike path which follows along the Canal du Rhône au Rhin up to Kembs. By riding along the Huningue Canal, you’ll end up arriving at the Trois Pays walkway which leads directly to the German border. The road follows along the banks, then crosses the Rhine to arrive in Switzerland, in the city of Basel.

The tour, which stretches between Baldersheim and Battenheim, winds along both banks of the Quatelbach, a peaceful river in the plain that was probably dug out in the Middle Ages by human hands to irrigate various villages and operate mills. The route, without difficulties, partly follows a pleasant cycle path and can be covered in its entirety by VTC (mountain bike). Departure and arrival are near the town hall of Baldersheim.

This trail, which follows EuroVelo 5 and 6, starts at Battenheim and takes you along peaceful rivers and canals at the heart of Mulhouse, with its rich historical and industrial heritage. You can benefit from the various facilities made available to cyclists to add a cultural touch to this circuit. You then continue in the decidedly rural atmosphere through state-owned Harth Forest which will gently take you back to your starting point.

This tour allows you to discover the natural riches of Kingersheim and Wittenheim such as the banks of the Ill and Dollerbaechlein rivers as well as the emblematic public facilities and places of worship that make the personality of these cities of the potassium basin. Departure and arrival are from the E Leclerc store where parking is available.

This circular route runs successively along the Nouveau Bassin, the Canal de Jonction and the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, before crossing the Nordfeld district. Departure and arrival are at the southern end of the Nouveau Bassin (tram N°2, stop Nordfeld-Filature).

DEPARTING FROM LAUSANNE, HEAD TO THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF GRUYÈRES, HOME TO THE FAMOUS SWISS CHEESE! Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. After walking along the Quatelbach and through a housing estate, you can see the geodesic stele called Gupfel in Alsatian. This obelisk was built in 1804 by Napoleon I to "serve as a map of Helvetia and to determine the size of the Earth". The obelisk, located at the southern end of a 19 km measuring line ending in Oberhergheim, was also used as the zero point for the Alsace-Lorraine hiking route coordinate system for the German land register of 1884.

This monument marked with an N reminds us that it was Napoleon Bonaparte who, in 1802, ordered the digging of the Rhone-Rhine canal (begun in 1804 and completed in 1834). An island called the Rondelle, built in 1828 and levelled in the 1960s when the canal was widened to make it a wide-gauge canal, is the origin of the name of this district.

Erected in 1921, this stele reminds us that 8 people were shot in this place in 1915 and 1916 by the German authorities for spying or treason in wartime. Destroyed by the Nazis in 1940, it was rebuilt after 1945.

This district was created in the early 1930s, when a large railway depot was built, of which only the workers' houses remain. A second phase of development of this district corresponds to the establishment of the Peugeot factories in the 1960s.

Poets' footbridge over the Quatelbach. This river, which was probably built in the Middle Ages to supply the villages and mills of Modenheim, Sausheim, Baldersheim, Battenheim and Adolsheim (no longer in existence), branches off from the Ill just outside Mulhouse, at the Nouveau Bassin. It joins the Ill again at Ensisheim. Its name comes from Catherine de Bourgogne (Katel in German), wife of the Duke of Austria. It was she who improved the river in 1401, at the time when Ensisheim was the capital of the former Austria (Habsburg possession in Upper Alsace and Baden).

It used to be called s'Sardinless because at the end of the 19th century it was possible to taste sardines coming directly from Le Havre (see explanatory marker).

After 1871, the German soldiers stationed in Mulhouse came to train in this sector of the Hardt forest. Concrete walls, some of them impressive, remind us of the existence of this military ground which was used until the 1970s. During the First World War, 8 Alsatian civilians were shot on this military field (see J).

It manufactured felts for industry and employed up to 1200 people in 1960. It is now occupied by the municipal technical services, an after-school facility and a cultural complex, Eden.
