There's no obvious explanation for the origin of the commune's name. The most likely one is that it was named after an early settler or head of a colonial court (1), an old Alsatian institution, which Beblenheim possessed. The name Babilenheim is found in 1128, followed by numerous variants to finally arrive at the current name. Beblenheim, like many neighboring villages, passed from hand to hand during the Middle Ages, from the Lords of Horbourg to the Counts of Wurtemberg. The first was the Black Death, the greatest calamity to hit Alsace from the mid-14th century onwards. In 1525, some of Beblenheim's inhabitants were also involved in the Peasants' War or "Rustauds" war, triggered by exaggerated drudgery and the ever-increasing burden of taxation within the Holy Roman Empire. It ended with the Battle of Scherwiller, fought by the Duke of Lorraine's troops. Finally, the village lived through the horrors of the Thirty Years' War and beyond, the passage of various armies, until Alsace became part of Louis XIV's France in 1680. Such was the misfortune of this period - war, plague and famine - that the village remained unoccupied for seven consecutive years. The village went through another difficult period during the fighting in the Colmar pocket, where it was on the front line from early December 1944 to late January 1945. Since then, the village has resumed its steady growth around its traditional activity: winegrowing.

Following Géovino from Bennwihr or Mittelwihr you'll learn about the fundamental importance of relief for vines. You will understand how the curves of this landscape were formed, but also why they have always been the allies of the vine. To start the walk, you have two options: Go to the totem located at Bennwihr town hall, walk along rue du Général de Gaulle to the cemetery and turn right to enter the vineyard. From the totem pole on the Mandelberg parking lot in Mittelwihr, go up rue du Mandelberg, then, at the low wall, turn left to reach the hill of almond trees.

Follow Géovino to Riquewihr to learn about the fundamental importance of rocks for vines. Mittelwihr, a wine-growing village on the Alsace Wine Route includes some twenty propri recoltants and is one of the "Perles du Vignoble". Mittelwihr is known as the "Midi de l'Alsace" thanks to a microclimate that allows for the presence of numerous almond trees. Every year, Mittelwihr is the place to be. Every year, these almond trees bloom on the Mandelberg hill (see point B ), where the wines and Grand Cru of the same name flourish. beautifully. A fragment of a Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter, currently on display at Colmar's Musée Unterlinden, was found at Mittelwihr, proving a human presence as early as the first centuries of our era. In the Middle Ages, various abbeys in Alsace and Lorraine held property in the village. Mittelwihr then became part of the seigneury of Riquewihr, initially a fiefdom of the Counts of Horbourg. From 1324, it passed into the hands of the Counts of Wurtemberg, who held it until the French Revolution. The Château de Mittelwihr, owned by the Lords of Reflingen from the XIIIth to the XVIth century, would successively belong to several noble families before finally being sold as national property during the Revolution and destroyed in December 1944. Mittelwihr was bombed and almost completely destroyed during the fighting in the "Poche de Colmar" in December 1944. Only the lower parts of the medieval church tower and a few arches of the 19th century church, as well as a few houses, were spared. All village buildings were rebuilt during the second half of the XXe century. Alsatian architect Gustave Stosskopf was responsible for Mittelwihr's post-war urban morphology. The Route des Vins is its backbone. He laid out a public square in front of the town hall, adding shops, the fire station and the post office. The dwellings are surprising in their diversity, as Stosskopf defined no standardization model, but an architecture that leads to similarities, not uniformity..

You pass a curious building made of Vosges sandstone. This is the Haut-Koenigsbourg pumping station and its neighbouring building, which houses the spring catchment. Despite its modest dimensions, this building impresses with its neo-Romanesque style. It is reminiscent of the Metz railway station, also built in a style close to the 12th century, that of the time of the Hohenstaufen, the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. On the top of the facade, there is a representation of the imperial eagle and the year 1901.

The ruin of the Oedenbourg, also known as Petit-Koenigsbourg, is not currently open to visitors, but you can see some beautiful remains behind a fence, notably a blind shield wall and several Gothic windows that mark the former dwelling (14th century). First mentioned in the 12th century, the castle was enlarged several times and finally abandoned in the 15th century (hence its name Oedenbourg - abandoned castle).

This former ossuary, located next to the parish church (medieval wall paintings visible in the medieval bell tower), replaces Romanesque bays from the former priory of Lièpvre.

Rebuilt in the presbytery garden, a small 18th century half-timbered building has been converted to house the heritage collections on the history of Grussenheim, the association of the Friends of Annette de Rathsamhausen and the old Grussenheim. Open on request.
