Indigo Colmar: Adventures and Discoveries in Horbourg-wihr

Route through villages, stop at Colmar, voted best European destination 2020. Typical Alsatian town, its old town invites you to take a refreshing break on a terrace! Return via the cycle route along the Colmar Canal.

Departing from Neuf-Brisach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its perfect citadel built by Vauban, the tour heads west towards the Ill at Logelheim and the Lauch at Herrlisheim, which it quietly follows to the southern gateway to the city of Colmar. It then offers an incursion into the heart of the city of Bartholdi, the much-loved Alsace wine capital with its rich heritage. A refreshing break at the Colmar-Houssen water sports center is welcome during the warmer months. The route then enters the heart of the Alsatian ried, stopping off at Illhausern, a former fishing village on the banks of the Ill, home to the prestigious Auberge de l'Ill. From Marckolsheim, the route follows the Véloroute Rhin - EuroVelo 15 back to the starting point, sometimes along the Rhone-Rhine canal, sometimes through the villages of the Rhine strip.

Starting behind the Catholic church, follow the adorable coot who will be your guide on this walk. In just a few stops, the Colmar canal, the landscapes of the Ried and the flora and fauna will hold no more secrets for you. So make the most of your family outing along the water.

Take a tour of the bunkers on the edge of the forest to the south of the village of Fortschwihr. There is a sign in front of each bunker, with a QR code giving you information about the history of each one.

In the beautiful Orch national forest to the north of Holtzwihr, on the 3.5km botanical trail, you can see the beautiful resurgence of our water table at the place known as ‘Sources de l'Orch’, giving rise to the Orchbach river, which then flows into the Bennwasser and the Ill.

You will find works by both these illustrious personages along this trail starting from Kunheim and cycling along the canal which takes you to Biesheim, with its museum, then onto Neuf-Brisach, commissioned by the Sun King and a masterpiece of Vauban; its unique, octagonal architecture means it is deservedly listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The itinerary takes you on a discovery tour of tranquil villages in the plain and on to Colmar, the birth place of Bartholdi, who built the Statue of Liberty, lighting up the world and standing proud at the entrance to New York harbour. It was a gift from France to the United States. You can then follow the canal as it takes you to the alluvial plains and back to your starting point.

Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. An Old Dream: Flying? Then dare! Treat yourself to a first flight in a two-seater paramotor with a microlight instructor. Comfortably installed in your harness, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and even take pictures. Discover Alsace from an unusual angle: fly over the plain, the vineyards, the castles, the Rhine. You will also be able to take the controls in flight and pilot this fabulous flying machine yourself. Set up in 1957, the Vauban Museum occupies the ground floor of the Belfort Gate. Going through the two rooms, the visitor will learn about the fortress of Neuf-Brisach, the last fortification built by Vauban before he died. The displays will tell him something about the history of the town, from the date of its construction in 1699 to the present day times. A raised-relief plan shows the fortress such as it was conceived by Vauban; it is a faithful copy of the model on display in the Relief Model Museum in Paris. Among other interesting documents, the visitor will ind the plans of the fortification and the techniques of construction; the layout of the various buildings; a bust statue of Vauban made by Coysevox and documentation about the 1870 siege and WWII.

Inside the ramparts of the Vauban citadel in Neuf-Brisach, internationally renowned artists have taken over nearly 1,200m² of an old casemate to create the MAUSA Vauban. Come and discover the portrait of Vauban by stencil artist C215, the frescoes by Seth the globe-painter, the large white bodies by Jérôme Mesnager, the immersive installations by Denis Meyers and Levalet, the metro graffiti artist Nasty, Pure Evil's Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Ford's XXL photographs, Guy Denning's chapel... and much more!

Attested from the fifteenth century, St Gregory church was completely rebuilt in the eighteenth century but retains the base of the medieval tower. The building is surrounded by a cemetery and a small garden. On the west facade, o monumental gate surmounted by a pediment can penetrade inside the building, which has polychrome decorations. A religious museum was housed in a chapel visible from the outside.

Located in Marckolsheim in pillbox # 35 on the third line of defense, this Memorial commemorates the fierce fighting of June 15, 16 and 17, 1940, which resulted in over 80% destructions for the town. The rooms have been rehabilitated such as they were in 1940: firing chambers, generating unit, sleeping quarters, command post, well for drinking water etc. They are outfitted with original weapons such as an antitank gun, machine guns, mortars, Bren guns, as well as a variety of optical equipment. Weapons and their ammunition, war memorabilia or photographs taken in 1939 and 1940 are displayed in the cabinets. Outside are exhibited various military vehicles, including a 152 mm Russian gun, a Sherman tank, a half-track, an armored car, a field kitchen, an anti-aircraft Bofors gun and part of a Bailey bridge.

The club Sports Nautiques Centre Alsace, allows everyone, whatever their level, the practice of water skiing and wakeboarding, in a natural setting.

We owe this neogothic church, built between 1864 and 1866, to the architect Ringeisen. It features a frontal bell tower, a vaulted nave with aisles on both sides, and a polygonal choir. It is nicknamed "the cathedral of the Ried" due to its vast proportions. The frescoes and paintings were restored in 2009. The church's windows enable you to see inside the church, to admire its interior design and frescoes.
