Nature getaway at Le Canigou in Espira-de-Conflent

A varied route through fields and vineyards connecting Sorede, beautiful village of  the Albera, to the seaside. Departure from the place called Les Trompettes hautes located in the lower part of Montesquieu. At the roundabout, turn right then left onto Cami des Trompettes. At Mas Santraille, cross the D61, continue straight on traverse du Mas Santraille then rue de la Plansounade and Cami del Coscobell. At Cami de Matemale, the part of the EV8 (in blue dotted lines on the map) is not managed by the community of communes. Follow the EV8 route which continues straight ahead across fields (or possibility to go down to the left in the direction of the commune of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines to go and visit the abbey and its famous lintel). Turn to the right following the markings on the ground. Continue straight ahead on the tarred track. Here, maintenance area for bicycles. At the exit of the tarred track, turn to the left then at the junction to the right, ford crossing. Cross the D50, second ford crossing.Continue until Sorède. Turn left on the small traverse to rejoin a few meters further down the tarred EV8 track. Cross the D11, pass by the Sorède multisport hall, ford crossing a little further, follow the EV8 signs. Turn left and continue on the D2, then a few meters further turn right towards Auberge du Roua following the small road that crosses the river “la Massana”. Continue to the left on chemin du Roua. After Auberge du Roua, pass under the bridge and continue on chemin du Roua then to the left rue des Micocouliers. Go straight ahead on rue du Moulin Mars. Turn left then a few meters further to the right before the fire station, avenue du 11 Novembre 1918. Follow along the river and turn left on avenue du 14 Juillet. Continue straight ahead at the roundabout, rue des Trabucayres. At the roundabout, go right, avenue Molière. At the roundabout, after the bridge turn right, then continue towards the beach until the arrival roundabout along avenue Général de Gaulle. At the roundabout, turn left and before the Tourist Office, turn right, avenue des Pins. On the green promenade, go to the left. At this point, leave the seafront by turning left, pass between two buildings to reach avenue de la Méditerranée. At the roundabout, go right on route du Littoral up to the pont de la Riberette. Advice: a little further on, venture into the Mas Larrieu Nature Reserve along the banks of the Tech.

Stroll towards a strategic site of the Battle of Boulou. Stunning viewpoint and numerous fountains At the entrance of Mas Péricot, either make a round trip to the belvedere, or ignore the track that leads to the Belvedere and take the dirt track, to the left, which goes up towards the Font dels Treze vents. At this point, there is a picnic table and a fountain. At the junction, there are two options: either continue towards the Font Del Sabater and follow the DFCI track, or climb up the steep and narrow path, located to the left of the transformer. This path offers an exceptional panorama. At the top of this steep slope, continue straight on the DFCI track towards the Soldier's "casot". (On the north side of the Soldier's "casot", a trail leads to small rock formations with original shapes, like "the Oyster". Beautiful panorama of the Roussillon plain). For the return, return to this point and descend by taking the DFCI track back to the starting point."   

Hiking to explore ruins of San Cristau and an old chapel transformed into a refuge From the city hall carpark go up the main street to the fountain St Cristau.  Go around the fountain on your right, then ascend the little street and turn left immediately. At the end of Saint Christophe street, take the marked path brings you opposite to the botanical trail. After about 100 meters, at a crossroad, turn right on wooden steps, and      continue to walk on the botanical path. Join the track upstream and turn left to reach the basin. Leave to the left of  the massif along the stream toward the Coll de Llinas. Leave the track and continue on the path that goes up sharply in front of you. At the Col de Branca, leave the track to take a right on the path that goes to the Pic San Cristau and the Chapel. Start back down  to the northwest by a path to the track then take right and continue in this direction to the captured water source.  In a bend, leave the trail to take a path through the beech forest.  Cross a track towards a cistern, then in a bend,  re-cross that track a second time to descend on a steep path to the Collada d'en Godo.  Climb up a few meters, bypass the masonry pillar and reach the trail. Take the botanical trail to come back to Montesquieu-des-Albères, the  final point of your hike.

Discovery of Montesquieu, from the Tech riverside to the village passing by the vineyards. Go up the street and turn right onto Fontaine Street. Go to Albères Street to the left and continue on Ecluse Road. Go to the viewpoint via Mas Serre Road by turning right. Turn left onto Trompettes Road, cross under the D618 bridge to reach the roundabout and turn left onto Avenue de la Mer. Turn right into the small housing estate, which is crossed by Tambori Street. Continue on the path alongside the Tech River. Turn right towards Breuilet Mill, take Mill Road. Go straight onto the vineyard path. Turn right, then take Long Street. Then left onto Plansounade Street. Turn right onto Las Serres Road, which you'll leave a few meters later to take a path through the vegetation. Head right onto the path. Continue uphill, veering left. At this point, turn left. Upon reaching Las Serres Road, go right towards Roi Road, then reach Grand'rue where the Town Hall, the starting point, is located.

Nice little bucolic stroll to discover the flora of the Albères. You will come across refreshing springs and fountains on this route. At the car park, go up into the village and take the road to Villelongue-dels-Monts on the left. Take the first street on the right, (rue Saint Christophe) then continue on the left. Follow the signs for the botanical path. Go up on the track and go to the right. Go down to the large concrete tank then go towards the houses. Take on the left. At the end of the street, turn right to return to the car park.

The discovery of a village in the Albères and its priory nestled in the massif. A brief detour through the peaceful district of the Mas Catalan in Laroque-des-Albères, overlooking the plain. Starting from the festivities area, head left, then straight ahead, passing in front of the church. At the end of the street, turn left and continue straight on Cami del Vilar. Keep left on Cami del Vilar. Turn left onto the paved path that goes downhill. Take the dirt track in front. The path ascends towards the Catalan farmhouses of Laroque-des-Albères. Arrive at the Mas Catalans at a dirt parking area with a cistern and a spring, then take the street that goes uphill (Chemin du Vilar) and follow it to the end. Turn left onto the dirt track that climbs into the Albères massif. You will reach a flat trail at a crossroads of tracks; take the one on the left following the yellow markings, heading towards Prieuré Santa Maria del Vilar. Continue to follow the markings. Do not go left. There is a fairly steep descent into the forest. Upon reaching the priory, you can visit it (only in the afternoons). Afterward, descend on Cami del Vilar back to the village center.

Turn right at Route de Bages. 3. In Elne, turn right onto Rue du Salita and then take the first left onto Rue d'Oran. Cross Avenue Paul Reig. 4. At the roundabout, take the second exit, Chemin de la mer. 5. Turn right onto Chemin Sainte-Eugénie. 6. Continue on Chemin Sainte Eugénie.7. Turn right onto Chemin de la Mer.8. Turn right and follow the Tech to the D81. 9. Turn right to cross the bridge and continue towards Argelès-sur-mer on the EV8, which runs alongside the D81. 10. Turn left and follow the seafront. 11. Turn right towards the Tourist Office

The link between two villages is made on a small country road with little traffic and many trees. The route follows a small stream. 1. Leave from Ortaffa town hall (don't forget to take photos of the bell tower, you're unlikely to see two like it). Follow the road to the right. 2. At the ice factory, continue along the railway line. 3. Turn right onto Route de Bages and continue straight on Avenue du Général de Gaulle.4. Go up to the right, passing the lime kiln, and turn right into rue du Couvent towards the Tourist Office. From here, follow the signs to discover the historic centre. 

Hike through the magical forest above the Santa Maria del Vilar Priory and discover a strategic farmhouse in the Albères Massif : the Mas del Pou du Vilar (15th – 21st century) Pass by the Santa Maria del Vilar Priory (don't hesitate to visit). Continue along the stream and begin the fairly steep climb in the forest following the yellow markings. At the signpost, take a right towards Mas del Pou. Continue on the path until you reach Mas del Pou, where everything is provided for a picnic break (even sheltered areas), do not descend to the right into the forest. Turn right above the Mas onto the DFCI track towards Villelongue-dels-Monts. Attention! A few meters ahead, a wooden sign indicates the Priory on the right, do not head in that direction but continue on the track until you reach the bridge over the Villelongue stream. Turn right onto the small paved road back to the Priory.

Discovery of an exceptional natural environment At an altitude of 850 m, this chasm is about 60m by 30m and is accessible thanks to a platform of vision for a visit in full safety. It is the abyss of both absorption and collapse. The total depth reaches about 110m. This hole was a mass grave. When the horses were at the end of their life, their owner took them to this chasm. We guess then why this hole was prized crows.

One can, without fear of being accused of exaggeration, describe Fontestorbes as "Wonder of the World" and contrary to the seven wonders of the ancient world, all having in common to be the fact of the man, Fontestorbes is the only fruit of the chance of nature. A rare phenomenon and really extraordinary. For most of the year (7 to 9 months), the fountain runs constantly. On the other hand, during periods of low water from July to September, one day, it becomes abruptly intermittent over a complete cycle of about 60 to 90 minutes.

The Frau Gorge is the result of a long geological evolution. The mountain of Frau is an accumulation of secondary folded and compressed tablecloths carved by the glaciations, the strong snows and numerous floods digging the valley in gorges.

The fountain, once the place of processions and altars, was the village centre of old Mireval which was, according to memory, in a valley where tiles and carved stone was found.

The name of this hamlet comes from the occitan mira valh meaning "look at the valley".

On this neck that leads to the hamlet of Morenci was an enigmatic cross on which were roughly carved in high relief a face and below the number 8. Below the inscription 1780 seemed to be added. On this Neolithic site one can suppose that this cross had been carved in a megalith carved previously.
