This lovely hike with a sharp climb will delight mountain lovers keen on wild and empty spaces. Its steep slope can be a perfect circuit for those who like to race the clock on their mountain climbs. No matter how you reach it, the summit of l’Estibète, at the beginning of the Pyrenees, provides a gorgeous panorama. If you look up, you may see birds of prey in the Pyrenean sky. The bearded vulture, a scavenger with an orange stomach and black wings, has a wingspan of about 3m ( 9.84ft.). It is the biggest bird of prey in Europe. Its cousin, the more solid, brown griffon vulture follows closely behind it with a 2.80m ( 9.18ft.) wingspan. Smaller, the golden eagle differentiates itself by its hunter’s flight. Its wings of 2.10m ( 6.90ft.) wingspan are solid, dark brown and curved at the end. Immature eagles have white markings.

The forges of l’Ouzom, consuming large amounts of charcoal, used some hundreds of hectares of forests every year. Colliers used to work in the forest, as closely as possible to the resource. They built stacks of wood that they burnt, covering them with dirt, so that they could burn without air. During the 19th century, it was the turn of movable metal kilns, which also enabled the recovery of tar. These large, lidded cauldrons were, in the case of those of Monbula, carried up, whole, on men’s backs as well as rolled on logs. Some elders can still remember the exploit!

The Lac d'Anglas hike is one of the must-do itineraries starting from Gourette. It offers a varied mountain landscape where waterfalls, cliffs and a lake enhance the grandiose scenery of the high-altitude pastures you pass through.

Itinerary goes up on the sector Cotch to the place called "Les Fontaines de Cotch" or nearly 800m of uneven, open access. The climb is done under the practitioner's entire responsibility. The junctions between the courses take parts of tracks, to go in the direction of the descent so as not to hinder the skiers. On the slopes I respect the rules.

The Tour du Sanctus loop offers a beautiful panorama on the famous Pic du Sanctus. From Gourette, you will cross the summer pastures but you will also discover the lakes and laquets of our territory. This high mountain itinerary is for experienced runners.

Departing from Gourette, this loop takes in 4 mountain lakes: Louesque, Uzious, Lavedan & Anglas. there are 2 possible itineraries, including one for hikers looking for thrills and elevation changes, who will appreciate the climb between the Coste de Goua hut and the Pic du Sanctus. This high-mountain itinerary is for experienced hikers.

A very nice and sportive trail starting from Gourette which will lead you to the Aubisque pass through the Tortes and Arbaze passes, down to the villages of Aas and Eaux-Bonnes and back to Gourette. To be done for the view on the cirque of Gourette, the blueberries, the vultures which regularly fly over the site.

The cabin of Monbula

On the territory of Louvie-Soubiron but with an access by Ferrières you will arrive at the Mondot Farm. The Mondot family produces goat cheese and welcomes you every day from 5:30 p.m. (from Easter to All Saints' Day) to visit the farm and the cheese-making room. You can also watch the milking of the goats.

Accessible via the GR 10. Fishing possible. Uzious Lake (2120m) : dominated in the West by the peak Anglas. Lavedan Lake (2178m) : dominated south-southwest by Géougue of Arre and Hourquette of Arre in the West. In the south-southeast, rises to Pene Arrucours and the neck of Uzious on the left. Lakes Louesque (2272m): even smaller is nestled in a small valley with a stream joined Valentin in Plaa-Débatch.

The Green Mountain Farm is a farm of 19 hectares devoted to cattle farming - Blondes d'Aquitaine - and sheep - the Basque-Bearn sheep. Milk production is transformed on site: Christine makes and sells pure farm sheep cheese in the valley of Ossau and the greuil, feta and faisselle.

The lake is located at the bottom of a small circus bounded by Pene-Medaa (2521 m) and Arre Sourins (2614 m). On the eastern flank of the circus are the remains of an iron mining exploitation. The mining galleries, for some totally blocked by landslides, alongside traces of the railroad that allowed the evacuation of materials. In the upper part of the Ossau Valley, from Eaux-Bonnes, go up towards the resort of Gourette. Access by car : parking at the foot of the waterfall at the Ley parking lot next to the Ley camping/caravanning/caravanning area.
