Then follow the GRP signs to reach Lake Paloumères, Port de Pierrefitte and descend to the village of Bourg d'Oueil.

X Country - Altitude: max 1870m/mini 1241m. Pedal through the heart of the authentic Vallée d'Oueil, with its sweeping panoramas and mythical Port de Balès. You'll finish with a sensational descent that will make you forget what you've sweated. A physically demanding but technically easy climb on a 4x4 track to Lake Paloumères. This is followed by a trail ride, passing through the famous Port de Balès. Another trail takes you to Port de Pierreffite and, as a grand finale, you finish with a technical but thrilling descent.

The legendary route over the passes from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean takes in the Haute-Garonne via some of the world-famous passes: Menté, Portet d'Aspet, etc. Travel by bike on these routes, where majestic views are the order of the day and the sporting character is on the agenda! On your pedals! The route starts at the Col de Peyresourde. However, the route can be taken in any direction.

The Paths to Freedom are routes taken by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: members of the Resistance, Allied pilots, Jews and those who refused to take part in the STO.... In attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the threat of Nazism that endangered their very existence. Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association “Paths of Freedom through the Comminges and the Val d’Aran” invite you to discover the first section of this route, from Port de Balès to Portet de Luchon. This walk is suitable for families, provided they are wearing good walking boots. The elevation gain is 547 m, but the route is mostly downhill, with an elevation loss of over 1,000 m. By taking this route via the Port de Balès, you’ll be following in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the Françoise resistance network, an early ‘helper’ who played a part in the escape of at least 700 people. Like André Bon, who made it all the way to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees. A perilous and gruelling human endeavour, this arduous crossing claimed the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or of Nazi troops. You will pass by the Bordères lake and then climb to the Pic du Lion, the high point of the day. This itinerary will take you along the GR de Pays Oueil-Larboust, a total length of 43km. From Port de Balès, take the trail 50 m before the pass, which will take you to Port de Pierrefitte via a track and then to Lake Bordères via a trail. At the lake, follow the trail climbing up to the left, marked in yellow and red (beware of herds with Patou dogs). Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious reserve.

Trail accessible in winter. Hiking in the Larboust valley. Pass through the villages and admire the local mountain architecture. Recognisable by the cross on top of this erratic boulder, this walk offers a panoramic view of the Larboust valley. Depart from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, follow the road towards Poubeau, then follow the signs for Labach de Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach La Moraine, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

Trail accessible in winter. Magnificent balcony path offering views of the high mountains and valleys. An ideal place to take in the scenery. Start from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, turn right behind the church, then follow the signs to Jurvielle, then Labach de Cathervielle until you reach Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach the Moraine de Garin, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

The main attraction of the Saint-Pé la Moraine Chapel, however, lies not in its architecture but in its exceptional decoration (sculptures, reused materials, etc.). Saint-Pierre or Saint-Pé-de-la-Moraine Chapel This pretty chapel is located on a moraine - large mass of ice - of the Larboust glacier. Saint-Pé-de-la-Moraine, built in a mixture of limestone, granite, shale and recuperation of ancient materials. Although reworked at the end of the Middle Ages, it is representative of the style of the first Romanesque art in this mountain Comminges of the Middle Ages based on the richness of its Gallo-Roman heritage. A few cinerary trough lids, these funerary urns, integrated into the chapel, are characterized by slightly less conventional representations. On the buttress of the chevet, notably on the base slab, the sculptor has added attributes (pottery and a series of tools) to the usual simple busts embodying the deceased. It is certainly their professional activity that we wanted to evoke. But the building was implanted in the middle of an area whose traces of occupation go back well beyond this period.Excavations have revealed that the chapel is at the heart of a Neolithic burial site. Inside, the stone paving, probably contemporary to the construction of the chapel, depicts a fish, a Christian symbol from the origins of Christianity. Listed as a Historic Monument. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, originally dating from the 16th century but rebuilt between 1847 and 1857, features paintings by Romain Cazes and was listed in its entirety in 2003. The church in Luchon, dedicated to Notre Dame de l'Assomption, was built during the Second Empire under the direction of the architect Loupot, and completed in 1857. Of varied architectural inspiration, the plan is in the Southern Gothic style, while the facades are in the Lombard-Romanesque style, in the spirit of the churches in the Luchon valleys. At the request of Mayor Charles Tron, the old 12th-century church was demolished in 1850 on the grounds that it had become too small to accommodate the crowds of spa visitors and tourists who flocked to Luchon. The new church has a capacity of around 600. However, vestiges of the old church still remain, the main one being the Gothic north side portal. A listed historic monument, this white Saint-Béat marble portal is decorated with scallop shells on the 2 side entablatures, a reminder that we are on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Gallo-Roman remains and a cemetery were discovered in 1977. A number of sarcophagi are on display at the foot of the church. On the north side of the church, a small square with the presbytery in the background retains a very village feel. The limestone of which the church is made has the particularity of being bluish, veined with white. The bell tower has 4 bells: the first, dating from 1596, has been listed since 1942, 2 other bells are from 1832, and the last was cast in 1923. Inside the church, the frescoes are the work of the painter Romain Cazes, a disciple of Ingres. Early in his career, Romain Cazes offered the parish priest of Montauban de Luchon 2 drawings imbued with a deep religious feeling. A few years later, while the painter was convalescing in Luchon, the abbot, who had not forgotten the talent of his young friend, asked him to decorate the church of Saint-Mamet, which was being rebuilt, with paintings and frescoes. In view of the quality of this work, Romain Cazes was then asked to create the frescoes for the church in Luchon, followed by those for the Thermes. After 4 years' work from 1852 to 1856, these frescoes formed 3 major compositions: the Coronation of Mary, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and the Divine Liturgy. The architect Loupot's decoration project was to make this spa church a holy reference for the benefits of water. To illustrate the works of Cazes, the Luchonnais themselves were used as models. The monumental organ in the church is decorated with angel musicians and is said to have come from an English church.

The Auberge d'Astau, situated at the foot of the Pyrenees at Les Granges d'Astau (commune of Oô), is an ideal starting point for walks to the lakes of Oô, Espingo, Portillon or the Val d'Esquierry. It offers two types of accommodation: a hostel with 5 double rooms, 1 single room and 1 family room with bunk beds, and a gîte with 2 dormitories sleeping 4 and 1 dormitory sleeping 6. Refuge on the edge of Lac d'Oô. After around 1 hour's walk, you'll reach one of the most beautiful sites in Occitanie, with its majestic 275m waterfall. Lac d'Oô is a natural glacial lake in the Pyrenees at an altitude of 1505m. It was raised by 10m by a dam in 1921 and now covers 42ha with a depth of 67m and a capacity of 15 million m3. Tapped by a gallery, it supplies the Oô hydroelectric power station in Luchon. Its name is particularly well known to cruciverbists. A popular destination for Pyrenean hikers, one of the attractions is its 275m-high waterfall. The trail continues beyond the lake to the Espingo and Saussat lakes, and then higher up to the Portillon lake. Accommodation (half-board) by prior arrangement. Former hotel converted into a gîte in the resort of Luchon, a stone's throw from the centre and the ski lifts.
