Manhay: “Memory” cycling route

Located in front of the town hall, this monument is dedicated to the paratroopers of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. This unit was responsible for protecting the Manhay-Bra-Lierneux-Fraiture and Malempré sector during the Ardennes offensive. On 26 December 1944, it defended the village of Vaux-Chavanne, which would never fall into German hands, with strength and courage.

This gun tube is a preserved piece of German PaK40 75mm gun, found after the Battle of the Bulge.This type of gun was built to cope with the arrival of new Soviet tanks during Operation Barbarossa. Subsequently used on the road, in vehicles and in bunkers, it became the most widespread model in the Wehrmacht.Further information: German PaK 40 remains

On 16 September 1944, on returning from a mission in Germany, a tragic accident occurred in the sky when two P-38 Lightning aircraft collided in the clouds. One of the two planes fell near Lierneux while that of the young pilot James F. Parker crashed on the heights of Manhay at a place called "Bahou", not far from where this monument was erected. They were both pilots in the 9th Air-Force, 394 Squadron of the 367th Fighter Group and were on their 18th mission.

On 25 December 1944, an US Army B-24 bomber flew over the village of La Fosse. It was returning from a mission over Germany. Seriously damaged by German fighters, the burning aircraft lost more and more altitude. Several crew members jumped out, while the pilots remained at the controls. When it arrived over the village of La Fosse, at low altitude, the B-24 lost one of its engines before crashing into a nearby field. This Panther tank (Panzer Mark V) was one of 5 German tanks abandoned in the minefield at the entrance to the village. The 43-tonne vehicle had a crew of 5 and was equipped with a 75mm cannon and two 7.62mm machine guns. It belonged to the 2nd Armoured Regiment of the 2nd SS Panzer Division.During the Battle of the Bulge, more than fifteen such vehicles were abandoned in the vicinity of Grandmenil, the extreme point of advance of this fearsome division, nicknamed “Das Reich”.Further information: The Grandmenil Panther rescued from the fighting

Installed along the main road, at the crossroads of the road to Bomal, a monument has been erected in honour of the 238th Engineer Combat Battalion, a unit of the army corps that had been ordered to install a defensive position at this location. In the meadow behind the monument, the 700 men in this unit placed thousands of mines on the ground, which were covered by a few centimetres of snow during the night of 24 to 25 December. Five German tanks were destroyed by this minefield during the assault on Grandmenil.

Inaugurated on 17 December 2017, this monument pays tribute to two divisions that fought in the defence of Manhay: the 7th armoured and the 106th infantry. Having evacuated the Saint-Vith area, these survivors, tired from a week-long battle, withdrew to Manhay. Armoured elements were installed in the village and south of the perimeter. On Christmas Eve, they were ordered to withdraw to form a new front line. It was during the withdrawal that the Germans attacked and invaded Manhay and Grandmenil. In the high ranks of the army, it was decided that Manhay and its crossroads should be taken over "at all costs". It is these two units that were being asked to take Manhay back. They twice attempted to accomplish this mission by crossing this field behind the monument. Faced with the Germans entrenched in the ruins of the village, any attempt was doomed to failure. This milestone commemorates the place where the German invasion was halted during the Battle of the Bulge. It is part of a network of around twenty identical markers, placed by the Touring Club of Belgium from 1949 onwards, at various points along the front where the attack was halted.

Located on the minor road leading to Vaux-Chavanne, this monument was erected in memory of Jules and Thérèse Danloy. Shortly after the invasion of Manhay by German troops, several families from Manhay tried to flee the town during the fighting. It was during this escape that Jules and his sister Therese were shot dead by the Germans on 25 December 1944.

Located on the wall of the former station, this commemorative plaque commemorates the courage and sacrifice of a battalion of paratroopers. For two days, Allied armoured vehicles and infantry attempted to retake the village of Manhay. On the night of 26-27 December 1944, under bombardment, it would only take a few hours for these fighters to remove the German soldiers from the ruins of Manhay. Many of them lost their lives here.
