Anyone living near Laon will of course be familiar with the two large state-owned forests that border it, the Saint-Gobain forest (to the west) and the Chemin des Dames forest (to the south).
But you may not be aware that there is a third forest almost on its doorstep, to the east: smaller than the two mentioned above, it is located in the commune of Parfondru but is managed by the State, as it belonged to the former royal domain that fell under its control after the Revolution.
No doubt the area must have been an inexhaustible hunting reserve under the Ancien Régime...
Nowadays, you don't need to get on horseback to explore it - the laie that divides it in two can easily be explored on foot or by bike! (However, check the Office National des Forêts website when hunting season opens for the schedule of drives organised there).
And if you fancy a longer walk in the area, here's a tip: follow the trail called Un bain de nature entre deux terroirs (around the communes of Parfondru, Bruyères-et-Montbérault and Veslud) also available on this app!
