You're sure you've already passed through this village-cum-street near the Lac de l'Ailette, so this time take the time to stop in the small car park opposite the church, and we'll take you to a place deeply marked by twentieth-century history...

After admiring the local church, take the straight road in front of you - the Rue des Bons Enfants - which will take you to the now-defunct village of Courtecon (or Courcon), which was completely destroyed during the First World War and on which a memorial chapel was built.
At the entrance to the ghost village, a small sign will greet you, reminding you of its original location...

A pleasant loop on a small, bucolic route for the whole family, to be combined with the nearby Ailette greenway!

Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Pancy-Courtecon

Built in the 12th century, this church was largely restored after 1918, when it suffered extensive damage (its vaults, attic and southern section were completely destroyed). Nevertheless, it still has a sculpted stone tomb (15th century), numerous funerary slabs (17th and 18th centuries) and a reliquary cabinet (16th century) of a type unique in the département. Traces of wall paintings can also be seen in the choir...

Courtecon chapel

Attested as far back as the end of the 12th century, this small commune had just under 100 inhabitants before 1914. Initially occupied by the Germans, it was completely razed in the spring of 1917 during the Nivelle offensive, and a decree attached it to neighbouring Pancy in September 1923. In 1932, the commemorative chapel we see today was erected on the edge of the main road in place of the former church of Saint-Martin...
