Hike : Tour du Mont de Cordon

La commune est formée de Brégnier et de trois hameaux : Glandieu, La Bruyère et Cordon.Le site est habité dès l’apparition de l’Homme. Puis, à l’époque Gallo-Romaine, le village devient très fréquenté grâce à sa proximité avec le Rhône facilitant le commerce. Grâce à la position stratégique du village (aux confins de la Savoie et du Dauphiné), le duc de Savoie possède dès le début du XIIe siècle la suzeraineté du château de Cordon. En 1601 Brégnier devient français par le Traité de Lyon. Les seigneurs de Cordon dominent alors tout le Sud du Bugey. Plusieurs découvertes sur la commune attestent de la présence des romains : une nécropole, une urne cinéraire en terre commune, un bracelet en bronze, des céramiques, des structures d’habitations de cette époque… Les constructions typiques de la commune sont généralement en pierre, les toits recouverts de tuiles écailles à coyaux. L’église de Brégnier a été construite à la fin du XIXe siècle sur l’emplacement de l’ancienne église. De style néogothique, elle possède un transept débordant avec au nord la chapelle Saint Jean-Baptiste et au sud la chapelle de la Sainte Vierge. Le clocher, sur lequel se trouve une horloge, est très pointu et se termine par une croix de pierre. Le monument aux morts de Brégnier-Cordon représente un ange aux ailes déployées qui soutient un soldat ayant été blessé. Une stèle en souvenir des martyrs d’Izieu se trouve à l’embranchement de la route d’Izieu. Le château de la Barre, construit au XIVe siècle, est désormais en ruine : il ne reste plus qu’un donjon carré. Le château de Cordon est un ancien château fort datant du XIIè siècle, centre de la seigneurie de Cordon. Aujourd’hui complètement en ruine, ce château fut le chef lieu d’un des plus anciens mandements du Bugey. Les Comtes de Savoie s’en servirent de forteresse pour barrer la vallée du Rhône. Ils en confieront la garde à la maison de Cordon. Le château fut probablement détruit au XVIIe siècle.

Get a lovely panorama on the Rhône river below, the surrounding mountains, the castle de la Barre and the small villages around. A short hike starting from Brégnier-Cordon leads to the top.

This waterfall, whose water gushes from a height of over 60 m, is classified as a "Sensitive Natural Area". It is open to the public all year round and can be admired from a special area. To preserve it, swimming, picnics and dogs are prohibited.To refresh yourself in summer, take advantage of the supervised swimming in July and August at the Glandieu lake, located 2 km from the waterfall, at the exit of the hamlet towards Brégnier-Cordon. Two car parks have been set up outside the hamlet. It is not possible to park in the immediate vicinity of the waterfall. It was in this same house that, on the morning of 6 April 1944, on the orders of Klaus Barbie, one of the heads of the Gestapo in Lyon, 44 children and 7 of their teachers were rounded up and deported. Only one of the instructors, Léa Feldblum, returned. A memorial museum since 1994, Maison d'Izieu welcomes over 40,000 visitors a year, including 18,000 schoolchildren. Through the history of the colony, it seeks to convey a universal message of vigilance and the fight against all forms of discrimination. Located on a protected site classified as a historic monument, this residence perched on a hill in the Bugey-Sud region is a must-see in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, at the gateway to Isère and Savoie. You can take a guided tour of the house, evoking the lives of the children through letters, drawings and photos. The museum, housed in the former barn, is divided into three areas to explore in greater depth the historical context of the Second World War, the networks for rescuing Jewish children, international criminal justice, crimes against humanity and the construction of memory. Since 2022, one area of the museum has been dedicated to the exhibition of its collections, documents and objects that Maison d'Izieu preserves itself: the Galerie Zlatin. Each year, a temporary exhibition is scheduled to give visitors the chance to discover "real" archive documents!
