Circuit-Découverte Courseulles-sur-mer

Example of an artillery gun, which the Canadians had to face on Juno Beach. Due to its ports, Courseulles was well defended by the Germans.

This tank was recovered from the sea in 1970. The Duplex Drive Sherman (DD) is the most famous in a range of special tanks employed by the Allied forces. Its name is due to the dual propulsion system : by track on land and by propeller at the sea, and equipped with flotation system. "Bold" is a memorial to the 1 st Hussars, which also bears the insignias of the Canadian regiments which took part in the D-Day landings and the Battle Normandy.

On 14 June, the ship "la Combattante" embarked General de Gaulle for his first return to France from England to Courseulles-sur-Mer This ship then sank in the North Sea in 1945 Five steles line the avenue that bears his name to pay tribute to the missing sailors and General de Gaulle.

This jetty used to have a twin. But both jetties were destroyed at the beginning of the war by the Germans. The materials were mostly reused to build the fishermen’s pier in Luc-sur-mer.

The Juno Beach Centre is the only Canadian museum on the D-Day landing beaches. The Centre presents the civil and military war effort in Canada and on the various fronts during the Second World War. This place of remembrance pays tribute to the 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives during the war, including 5,500 during the Battle of Normandy and 381 on D-Day. The present church dates back to 1786. The previous church was located in the graveyard near the castle. The central alley in the graveyard corresponds to the outline of the first church. There are also old tombstones of former priests. As it had fallen into disrepair, it was destroyed by a fire and storm.
