Itinéraire vélo : de Lisieux à Livarot

Built in the early 20th century to commemorate Saint Thérèse, the basilica was consecrated in 1954. Covering a surface area of 4,500m² with a 95m high dome, it is one of the largest churches to have been built during the 20th century. Three nave crypt adorned with mosaic. Carmelite and Saint Thérèse exhibition. 35 minute film. Visits of the dome in July and August. Unaccompanied or guided tours (in summer): tour lasts 45 minutes.

Between the church in Saint-Germain de Livet and the river that bypasses the castle stands the former parish cemetery. Ravaged during the French Revolution in 1789, it was deconsecrated in 1890 and replaced by a larger cemetery located on the high road. From 1960 to 1996, Abbot Marie, the Saint-German de Livet priest, straightened all the grave stones, even going as far as recovering a few which had been left in the river depths. At the foot of each stone, he created small gardens with hardy plants. The flowers they bore, together with those picked in parishioners’ gardens, were used to decorate the church during ceremonies.

After major work carried out around the shrine containing Sainte Thérèse's relics, an internalisation trail is now offered to pilgrims, enabling them, via modern methods, to rediscover and contemplate in greater depth Sainte Thérèse's message. Guided tours in July and August.

The house where Thérèse Martin lived as a child and up to the age of 15: dining room, Thérèse's bedroom (display cabinet with her toys), garden. Audio-guided tour in French, English, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Portuguese: 30 minutes.

Located 7km from Lisieux. A fine group of buildings typical of the Pays d'Auge, reuniting a timber-framed manor from the second half of the 15th Century and a 16th Century residence in glazed brick and stone, a corner tower, moat, lake... The interior is fully furnished. Property of the municipality of Lisieux, which stages seasonal exhibitions there.

In 1906, Georges Leroy, a Livarot-based owner of a company that produced ‘small nailed and stapled boxes’ acquired a steam engine he had seen in operation at the 1889 World Fair. The machine supplied the entire company with electricity up to 1957, today offering a fine symbol of the period. Listed on the French Historic Monuments supplementary inventory, the engine is open to visitors within a factory interpretation area, organised around it.
