Access: access to the north of Girmont-dVal-d'Ajol, at the place called Le Breuil, at the intersection of the Villerain forest road and the Tanchottes forest road.
Parking: near the Chalets de l'Empereur, at Le Breuil.
Distance: 3 km / Duration: 1 h / Difference in height: 70m / Marking: green ring.
1) The start is from the Chalet de l'Empereur (named after Napoleon III, a regular visitor to this area. It is a site that is always very popular when it is time for a picnic). Take the path to the left of the chalet, a few hundred metres to the right, and make a brief return trip to see a remarkable tree. On the way, walk along an old meadow which is now a peat bog.
2) The first pond on the left of the path is the Tanchottes pond.
3) Take the left-hand path which leads to the main road into the valley (a new pond appears, larger than the previous one).
4) The tarmac road leads directly to the Prieuré d'Hérival with no difficulty other than a short climb.
5) Go the other way round for the return journey (Variation: Return to the Chalet de l'Empereur by following the tarmac road down the valley to the Breuil crossroads: not signposted and traffic can be a nuisance, especially at weekends).
