The old Carthusian monastery, now Carmel, is classified as a Historic Monument. In the shadow of Pointe Percée (2752m), it was founded in 1151 by Carthusian monks. The buildings, refurbished in 1686 and 1717, contain the old cells of the monks, the large and the small cloister in Flamboyant Gothic style (open for visits only during the European Heritage Days), the harmonious chapel (1480-1530) and the common rooms. After having cleared the soils for centuries and organized pastoral and agricultural life, the Carthusians left the place in 1901, leaving the place since 1932 to Carmelites. Inside, the nuns broadcast a commented slide show about their way of life. A model of the buildings is also displayed. Contact our heritage guide Anne-France Binder for a guided tour of the monument. Do not hesitate to take a look at the chapel of John from Spain the Blessed to learn more about the origins of the building.
Le Reposoir's church was built by the same architect than the church of Saint-Sigismond : the priest Rouge. Constructed in 1849 on a Greek cross plan, it had no steeple for lack of means. In 1888, the church declared too small for 430 inhabitants, was extended on a Latin cross plan. The wooden belfry was replaced by the current steeple and the works were paid by the Carthusian monks. Inside, you will be able to see 8 stained-glass windows made by the factory of Bessac near Grenoble and a statue of John from Spain the Blessed. For a detailed story of the church and the village, please contact our heritage guide Anne-France Binder.
The construction of the Chapel of John from Spain the blessed is tightly linked to the story of the Carthusian monastery (nowadays a Carmel) and the village of le Reposoir. The Carthusian monks built a chapel in 1891 on the foundations of the first monastry of the XIIth century. However, John from Spain decided to move its community from its original location (located at the entrance of the Béol valley, former name of Le Reposoir valley) 1 kilometre farer, on a plateau, in the place where the current Carthusian monastry (the Carmel) stands nowadays, the first place was too narrow and threatened by the floods of the Foron. It is at the end of the XIXth century that the Carthusian monks excravated the foundations of the original sanctuary. Two architects identified the roman architecture style of the XIIth century. It is in the very same style that the Carthusian monks built the current chapel in the honor of John from Spain the blessed. Each year, on June 25th, anniversary of the death of the monk, the parishioners of the village, gather here in his memory.
Sale of farm goat and cow cheesesOpportunity to see animals (goats and cows) and cheese making.
La ferme des Mouilles est située à l'entrée du village du Reposoir. Elle produit et vend de l'Abondance (A.O.P) ainsi que du fromage de chèvre.
Frasses's Farm is located above the village of Reposoir, on the col de la Colombière road. The farm manufactures and sells french cheeses like reblochon or tomme.
The history of the village of Reposoir is closely linked to that of the Chartreuse, founded in the 12th century. The religious institution, now the Carmelite Monastery, is a former Charterhouse, founded in 1151 by Aymon de Faucigny to accommodate monks of the order of Saint-Bruno. The whole is classified as a historical monument.
