37 - REFUGE DU MAUPAS
Description
Return trip / presence of patou.
The view from the refuge will make you forget the effort required for the climb. From this perched eagle's nest, you can also admire the wild cirque of Crabioules. The refuge makes a perfect base camp for reaching the surrounding peaks, in particular the famous Maupas at 3109 m, with its recognisable silhouette. The summit is for experienced hikers only, as the tricky passage to the brèche requires particular care.
Start from the car park in the Vallée du Lis, cross the footbridge and climb through the beech forest to the Pré de l'Artigue. Below the Coume hut, turn right towards the Lac Bleu. Higher up, at the fork, turn right and pass under the penstock to reach the refuge.

Detailed stages
1 - The hike starts from the car park at the bottom of the Vallée du Lis. The initial climb takes you through a magnificent beech forest. Cross the Artigue meadow (1,395 m) and continue along the path on the right bank of the Houradade.
2 - At the footbridge over the Coume torrent (1,691 m), turn right, leaving the path leading to the Coume hut. Follow the path, a small rocky ridge, then cross the flat area with the black lake until you reach the Pratlong hut.
The wooded section is now over. Follow the path winding uphill alongside the penstock.
3 - Pass the EDF pumping station at 2,232 m and continue climbing. A little higher up, leave the path on your left that leads to the Lac Bleu. Follow the sign that tells you to pass under the pipe and in a few minutes you will arrive at the refuge (2,450 m).
