Duration: 2 1/2 hours
Distance: 7.7 km
Level: Difficult

"YOU ARE HIKING IN THE HEART OF THE ECRINS NATIONAL PARK
The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a rare natural, cultural and landscape heritage. To protect this wealth, the heart of the park is marked with blue-white-red flags, where regulations must be respected. Please take note of them when preparing your hike in order to preserve this collective asset on the ecrins-parcnational.fr website."

ROUTE
Starting from the lower car park in La Bérarde, walk up to the Maison de la Montagne in the village. Continue along the side of the building to the path that starts at the end of the village. From here, you can already see the Meije, Grand Pic and the Glacier Carré. Continue for around one hour, following the Vénéon to the Refuge du Carrelet. This is where the climb starts up to the Refuge de Temple Ecrins as you leave the main path, turning left at the junction. The path goes up through a forest of pine trees and the shape of some of the trunks says a lot about the harsh climate! Once you come out of the forest, you have a magnificent view over the Pilatte glacier and the source of the Vénéon. You then come out onto alpine grassland.

DURING THE HIKE
In the Alpine grassland, you can see rhododendrons, gentian violets and many other mountain flowers. There are often chamois and marmots around the mountain hut.

EXTRA INFO
The Refuge de Temple Ecrins is the starting point for many wonderful climbs, such as the Traversée des Ecrins and the Pic Coolidge.

Artist in residence at the Refuge des Temple Ecrins

Nawell Aïnèche is a transdisciplinary artist who will take the height in the mountains of Vénéon.Artistic Approach: "As a transdisciplinary artist, I have always been interested in the physiological and traumatic states of our bodies through time and society. This began with the stage costume, where it questions the physical body and the psychic state of the performer as much as the spectator (his experience, his relationship to the living). This close correlation led me to develop an organic and obsessive process whose primary need is to tell, to say and to weave the story from within in order to share it. The weaving of materials (videotape, sewing pins, medical tubing) has been a way for me to inscribe time into this material in a visceral and modest way using performance, sculpture and installation. Note of intent for the residency: "Halfway up the mountain, like a point of gravity within the mountain, the refuge is a place of movement where tired and blossoming bodies are in perpetual metamorphosis. The refuge, on the other hand, remains immobile and contains within it all the emulsion of life, like an organ. It is in the heart of the mountain that a physiological mechanism of the journey takes place. During this residency in the refuge of Temple-Ecrins, I will work on the correlation of bodies - architectural, living and non-living, in the organic space of the mountain and the refuge. My intention will not be to reveal the noumenal domain of the "true things" buried under the appearances of the travelers, nor to enter their intimacies but rather to capture the present moment in order to transcribe a common body. Collection of matter and memory, cartography of movements, full and empty, my work will navigate between the elements for a free and poetic retranscription of this organic whole that we form: the refuge, the mountain, and the travelers.
