Boucieu-le-Roi : a village with outstanding character

The village stands between Tournon and Lamastre overlooking one of the Doux's twists and turns. The former capital of the Haut-Vivarais was made a bailiwick by the King of France, Philippe-le-Bel until 1565, hence the name Boucieu-le-Roi. In 1291, King Philip "le Bel" made Boucieu the seat of a bailiwick court, it's a royal court of justice extending over the whole of the Haut Vivarais and made it a royal town that was directly under his authority (hence the name Boucieu-le-Roi). Free land until its replacement by Annonay in 1565, Boucieu-le-Roi had the King and various "coseigneurs" as its lord. The village was deeply marked by Pierre Vigne (1670-1740), missionary priest of Vivarais, whose tomb is in the church. Arriving in 1712 in Boucieu where he decided to stop after seeing topographical similarities with Jerusalem, he founded the Order of the "Saint Sacrement" there in 1715. His missionary work is perpetuated throughout the world thanks to the Sisters of the "Saint Sacrement" , a congregation born in Boucieu-le-Roi. Pierre Vigne was beatified on 3 October 2004 by Pope John Paul II. Saint John’s Church The Evangelist: Consecrated in 1492 it was partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion (16th century) and then restored in the 17th century. Of the early church only the central part of the facade remains. In this church, a place of pilgrimage, the “Blessed Pierre Vigne” rests. The Bailiff’s House: Listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1927, this beautiful house with its corbelled turret was the seat of the Royal Court of Justice. Boucieu is also the place where the velorail starts for an original discover of the gorge of the Doux.In 1291, King Philippe le Bel made Boucieu the seat of a bailliage court, i.e. a royal court of justice covering the entire Haut Vivarais region, and made it a royal town reporting directly to him (hence the name Boucieu-le-Roi). A freehold land until it was replaced by Annonay in 1565, Boucieu-le-Roi's lords were the King and various co-lords. The village was deeply influenced by Pierre Vigne (1670-1740), a missionary priest from the Vivarais region, whose tomb is in the church. Arriving in Boucieu in 1712, where he decided to stop after seeing topographical similarities with Jerusalem, he founded the Order of the Blessed Sacrament in 1715. His missionary work continues around the world thanks to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a congregation born in Boucieu-le-Roi. Pierre Vigne was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II. Saint-Jean L'évangéliste church: consecrated in 1492, it was partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion (16th century), then restored in the 17th century. All that remains of the original church is the central part of the façade. Blessed Pierre Vigne is buried in the church, which is a place of pilgrimage. La maison du Bailli: Listed as an Inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments historiques since 1927, this beautiful house with its corbelled turret was the seat of the royal court of justice.

1 - Arlebosc
Take the small road up to the end of the parking lot, which you leave immediately for a steep climb through vineyards and orchards.

2 - Malgaray
Turn right onto the flat track. Cross the road to take the small road up to Jean Gros. Go past the hamlet and turn left into the vineyards, which you will cross before climbing up a green valley. Just before the hamlet of Les Morfins, turn right to finish the climb through the forest to Saccary.

3 - Saccary
Take the small road on the right, then the path on the left a few hundred metres further on, which wanders along the terraces between the hamlets. At Gardon, turn right, then immediately left and right again on the RandoCroquis between low walls. Turn right on the road, then left and right again on an uphill forest road which becomes a track. At the end, turn left through the cherry trees. Turn right on the road, then left between meadows. A path leads off to the left and descends through the pines.

4 - La Garenne
Turn right on the road, then left at the new housing development, to descend through meadows to the main road, which you cross.

5 - A Sapet
Go down the small road, which becomes a carriage road at the chicken coop. You will come to a small road further down, which you should continue to follow. Turn left between the orchards just after Petit Chazotte.

6 - Grand Petit
Turn right between the orchards as far as the Blanchettes farm. Turn left onto the road. At the large crossroads below, take the path that leads to the stadium and follows the river Doux in its riparian zone.

7 - La Passerelle
Cross the footbridge and go up the other side. Cross the railway line and go up into the forest as far as Tincey. Turn left onto the départementale and then right onto the small, fairly steep road just after the bottom of the valley. Climb up to the Tournon - Lamastre road. Cross the road and climb to Rattier.

8 - Rattier
Take the slightly downhill path between orchards, which then enters a beautiful chestnut grove. Exit onto a small road that leads back down to Le Crestet. Follow the Tournon - Lamastre main road to the right, then leave it to the left to descend to the village access road via the embankment.

9 - Le Crestet
Take the small road down below the public toilets. Take the second small road on the left, before turning right at Les Girauds to plunge into the Doux Valley, first between orchards, then through pinewoods on a stony, technical path to the river. Ford the river, but be sure to check the water level. On the other side, turn left along the fences of the horse park. Pass a rocky passage on the cliff face (also check water level). Behind it, climb the steep path to the road that runs over the railroad. Then climb the road towards the village of Arlebosc.

10 - La Planta
Take the small road to the right for a few hundred metres, then left at Sarzier. Pass under the pretty porch of the stone farmhouse, then take the calade back to the village.
