Ligny and the Sombreffe's Castle

Take a look at the beautiful panorama of the Ligne Valley. Straight ahead lies the village of Ligny; to the left, that of Sombreffe with its church steeple; and to the right, you can see in the distance the Fleurus water tower, near which stands the Naveau mill, which served as an observatory for Napoleon.

At the picturesque place called La Goffe, the waters of the Sombre cascade through a wall of reddish rubble. Its waters then spread out and were used for washing clothes in medieval times. Later, the Goffe was used as a watering hole where herds once came to quench their thirst.

The Commune of Sombreffe has a very rich industrial past: marble quarry, sugar factory, tannery,... an exceptional architectural and historical heritage: feudal castle, Roman road and Gallo-Roman remains and the site of the battle of Ligny closely linked to the battlefield of Waterloo and the "Route Napoléon en Wallonie".The creativity, dynamism and innovation generated by Visit Sombreffe offers visitors several interesting tourist attractions.Memorial Tourism invites visitors to enter the history of the Battle of Ligny, 16 June 1815.
