Calvaire
Au carrefour, on s'étonne au calvaire de la représentation sculptée si poignante du Christ. On rapporte qu'un ivrogne ayant moqué le travail de l'artiste amateur, serait mort peu de temps après dans d'atroces douleurs aux genoux.
Croix
Au carrefour des rues Neuves et du Château, un calvaire singulier du XIVème siècle, apparaît derrière un treillis. Haut de 1.50 mètre, cette pierre sculptée en un seul bloc est de facture assez naïve et appartenait au tombeau d'un seigneur ayant combattu aux côtés du roi Jean le Bon (1350-1364); il s'agirait de Jacques de Lallaing. On admire ici le travail du sculpteur dans les grès et l'effet qu'il donne : une impression de vent qui souffle.
Ferme Despatures
Cachée dans un nid de verdure, le fronton de sa porte cochère porte la date de l'an 1760, signe d'un acte de restauration ayant été pratiqué. Le colombier situé au milieu de la cour est plus ancien (1688). La bergerie et la grange furent construites plus tard respectivement en 1764 et 1767. La famille Despatures qui s'y établit en 1825 est originaire de Marcq-en-Baroeul. Cette "cense" au carré vit la naissance d'un évêque missionnaire : Maurice-Benoit Despatures reçut comme sacerdoce : l'évêché de Mysore en Hindoustan, un vaste état indien peuplé de près de 6 millions de personnes.
Carrefour de l'arbre
Pour information, le chemin pavé sur votre droite donne plus loin sur l'un des hauts lieux du cyclisme : le fameux café du Carrefour de l'Arbre. La légende dit qu'y passer en tête lors de la course du Paris-Roubaix, c'est être le vainqueur de l'épreuve.
Eglise Notre Dame de la Visitation
Si le clocher de 1780 fut conservé, l’édifice fut complétement reconstruit à l’initiative de Ludger Honorez, alors nouveau curé de la paroisse en 1877. C’est l’architecte roubaisien Paul Destombes (18501919) qui en réalisa les plans ; on lui doit également la maison du peintre nordiste, Remy Cogghe à Roubaix ou l’église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Wattrelos. Les premiers travaux commencèrent le 9 Mai 1881 et la première pierre fut bénie le 7 août. C’est un entrepreneur de Bouvines, Henri Thisse qui réalisa les travaux. Ce dernier fut également choisi pour la reconstruction de la célèbre église Saint Pierre de Bouvines. De style « roman », dans un intérieur dépouillé, on admire au fond du transept gauche un superbe baptistère. On notera une statue de Saint Gangon ou Gengoult, le saint patron des « mal-mariés » ou des « cocus ». L’histoire rapporte qu’il mourut assassiné par l’amant de sa femme suite à un miracle prouvant l’adultère.
