Walking route: Loop around Lake Plagnes and Lake Tavaneuse

Lac des Plagnes, a UNESCO Geopark, is a popular destination for hikers, anglers and nature lovers. A starting point for many walks, it reveals all the mountain's natural riches.The lake is one of 20 geosites in the UNESCO Chablais World Geopark. Educational panels explain the geological evolution of the Lac des Plagnes and Cubourré site. Of glacial origin, it offers a glimpse of landscapes that have evolved over the past 20,000 years. The lake is accessible by car and has a parking lot, while visitors can stroll along the lakeside dyke. After the snow melts, you can walk around the lake on the "chemin du lac", which is not accessible to baby carriages or people with reduced mobility. In season, restaurants and picnic tables near the lake allow you to enjoy the area. To quench your thirst or spend the night in the mountains, the Tindérêts refuge is about an hour and 15 minutes away. Campervans are not allowed on the parking lot at night.

Located at 1805 m altitude in Abondance, at the foot of the cliffs of the small Piron point, between scree slopes and alpine meadows, the Tavaneuse lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Chablais. The access is sporty but the clarity of its waters is worth the diversions!The ascent to the lake, of moderate difficulty, is made from the Prétairié parking lot or from the Lac des Plagnes via the Ardens chalets. If you're feeling more sporty, you can reach the Roc de Tavaneuse (2156 m). Dry fly fishing is also available here at sunrise. Several hiking trails invite you to discover this mountain lake. Like all high-altitude lakes, swimming is not recommended for health reasons and to preserve the fragile aquatic environment.

Nestling at the foot of the cliffs at Entre Deux Perthuis, between rocks and Alpine meadows, Tavaneuse lake (1805 m) is without question one of the finest waterways in the Chablais. Anglers are welcome to try fly-fishing at either end of the day...Catching the majestic Arctic char, vairon and Fario trout at Tavaneuse lake is worth the effort; you can only reach the lake on foot, after setting out from Montriond or Abondance: From Abondance: a 2 hours hike via Serranant Alpine meadows. From Montriond: leave from Montriond Lake, follow signs for Chalets de Lens, carrying on uphill to Portes du Lens, then to Col de Tavaneuse on the right with the lake on the way down. Depth of the lake: 4.5 m. Area: 2 hectares. Fishing permits can be purchased at tourist offices.

The Lac des Plagnes (1191 m, 6.8 ha) is a veritable treasure trove of greenery and a popular spot for anglers. The lake is densely populated with trout, perch and whitefish.The variety of species guarantees pleasant fishing throughout the season. Trout and char are present and can be fished on sight due to the clarity of the water. Altitude: 1191 m; area: 6.8 ha, depth: 5 m. Parking and restaurant on site in summer. Fish population: brown trout, rainbow trout, perch, tench, rotengle. Fishing permits can be purchased at tourist offices.
