EN PASSANT PAR... LE CHÂTEAU
Description
Originally, the Roman road from Dax to Toulouse ran through this area. You will discover the history of the village known as l’Aveylas or l’Aveynas, dating back to the 13th century (a place dotted with hazel trees), and its 15th-century castle.

STEP 1 - Head towards the École des Noisettes, built in 1852 on land donated by Colonel Gleizes, the lord of the manor and mayor of the village.
At the crossroads, keep left and then turn right.
STEP 2 - Walk past the château, a 15th-century residence, which has been home to the Tersac, d’Anceau, Caffarelli, Gleizes, Alquier-Bouffard and Bézard families in turn. In 1952, the property was purchased by the Parmentier-Delassus family
STEP 3 - Walk alongside the Toulouse–Tarbes railway line for over 1 km, taking in the old cooperative wine cellar – occupied since 2013 by the Baro d’Evel theatre company – and the water tower, built in 1972 and covered with a mural in 2012, whilst enjoying the view of the Pyrenees mountain range.
STEP 4 - At the second level crossing, turn right onto Chemin du Lac towards Lavelanet-en-Comminges. You will come to a junction.
STEP 5 - Head towards the cemetery by taking Rue des Sources, which is opposite.
STEP 6 - Members of the Caffarelli, Gleizes and Alquier-Bouffard families, amongst others, have been buried in the present-day cemetery since 1840. Turn right onto Rue de la Comtesse. At the junction, turn left.
STEP 7 - Head towards the washhouse on the right, which is fed by a spring, then walk up to the left towards the town hall – the village’s former vicarage – along Rue des Marronniers.
STEP 8 - Turn right. The present church is the third to have been built since the village was founded. The first was destroyed by fire in 1419. Saint Cizy is regarded as the patron saint of the church at Lavelanet, whilst Saint Bartholomew is the patron saint of the parish. Head towards the public park and then onto Rue Joseph Cafferelli. Then make your way to the car park a few metres behind the church.
