Average gradient: 5.7% – Maximum gradient: 11.2% – Summit altitude: 1,755 m.
The ascent of this legendary Pyrenean pass, which has been tackled several times by Tour de France riders, begins on a wide, fast-rolling road and continues on a narrower road in the second half. The ride through the Oueil Valley and the final stretch, with its 360° panoramic views, will make you forget the effort of the climb.
The road between Bourg d’Oueil and the Port de Balès is closed every year from 30 November to 15 April (these dates may be extended depending on weather conditions).

Right from the start, the road climbs steeply, with a fairly uneven gradient at the beginning of the ascent.
From the junction towards the Oueil Valley, more challenging sections alternate with short, flatter stretches as the route passes through typical Pyrenean villages.

Detailed stages

1 - From Luchon station, head towards the Col de Peyresourde by turning right at the Lionne roundabout.
2 - For 3 km, the gradient is uneven (4–7 per cent) until the road levels out. After that, the climb is steady until the junction on the right leading to the Oueil Valley.
3 - You’ll pass through all the villages in the valley on your way to Bourg d’Oueil, with a steady gradient ranging between 5 and 7 per cent.
4 - In Bourg d'Oueil, turn right towards Port de Balès. This is the toughest section: the final 5 kilometres hardly ever dip below an average gradient of 8 per cent, with long, gradual inclines.
